Grand Elk south through Byron Center at 12:39pm. WAMX 4125, WAMX 4209 and 26ish cars. 10 or so tank cars followed by 16 covered hoppers. Train from last night didn't come south, so this is them.

Signal maintainer and track crew out in Charlotte today on the Charlotte Southern. Maybe new ownership has changed tack from Dombrowski’s desire to sell it off.

With the "temporary" shutdown of several local ethanol plants I wonder if there is a market for ethanol corn to be shipped by rail to out-state plants?LansingRailFan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 3:23 pmSignal maintainer and track crew out in Charlotte today on the Charlotte Southern. As long as the track is in service, they still have to inspect and do maintenance as required.LansingRailFan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 3:23 pmSignal maintainer and track crew out in Charlotte today on the Charlotte Southern. I suspect if they remove a rail, which effectively puts it out of service, CN might notice and remove the switch.

Who knows? I think track needs a lot of work but maybe they can set up some sort of transload operations out there. Seems like there’s vacant land trackside out there.AARR wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 3:29 pmWith the "temporary" shutdown of several local ethanol plants I wonder if there is a market for ethanol corn to be shipped by rail to out-state plants?LansingRailFan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 3:23 pmSignal maintainer and track crew out in Charlotte today on the Charlotte Southern. Re: Shortline Updates - October 2021
I thought the spur into the elevator was still in place. The passing siding next to it holds about 25 cars. The elevator spur could load about 5 cars at a time IIRC. A switcher working all day could load 25 cars. If the elevator spur is gone I guess it's a moot point.

Grand Elk north through Byron Center at 9:04pm. WAMX 4124, a 2nd unit, and 13ish cars. I'm quite sure they went south last night while I was asleep - vaguely recall hearing them.
Back south at 11:09pm with WAMX 4189, I presume 4124, and about 15 cars.
