I bet the pucker factor was EXTREME HIGH

I think your travel mug would meet its match, Aaron. Not just spilling, but FLYING, and falling. I guess washouts are the preferred way to stop trains. Seem to work better than plugging it. 30-40 mph to 0 in about 16 seconds...not bad (well...it is, really). That's a big kid roller coaster!SGT. S wrote:That would suck. Definitely spill your coffee.

Here's a runaway grain hopper car meeting a tied-down and unattended train. A grain facility was pushing the car with a front end loader and it got away from them. Happened in Nebraska. That's what I've gathered from a thread in another forum.

That is the KYLE railroad, LTEX Tunnel Motor and a HLCX ex-DEEX SD40 for power. I photographed that railroad in November when i was out there.
Re: Train hits a washout
That grain car looked to be going 25 to 30 mph. Anyone know how far it was running away.

CSX had several get away on the line from Lowell to Elmdale a number of years ago. They were doing an estimated 30-40 miles an hour thru wooded areas with roads with crossbucks. They slammed into a couple cars on the siding at Alden Nash and the lead car ended up in the middle of the street after going on the ground for a couple hundred feet. Again, lucky no one got hurt.

Question: Why wouldn't runaway boxcars trigger the crossing signals?

Good question. They still should have shunted the rails.hoborich wrote:Question: Why wouldn't runaway boxcars trigger the crossing signals?
