Wyes in Michigan
Was wondering how many wyes are still out there for turning engines/trains? I thought of 4 Sault Saint Marie, Gladstone, Cadillac and Kilgore. I'm sure those that travel more extensively around the state know of more and would appreciate them sharing. Thanks in advance.

Re: Wyes in Michigan
LSRC's yard in Saginaw is basically a wye.
There's also one at CSX's McGrew Yard in Flint (Atwood, I believe?).

Sturgis, Hillsdale, Lenawee Jct., Battle Creek (in the GTW yard by the engine house), Pt. (twice), Grand Rapids, Cadillac, Ludington, Walhalla, Baldwin, Richville, Bad Axe, Holland, Plymouth, Wixom, Trout Lake, Escanaba/Wells (2. 1 each for CN and E&LS), and Eagle Mills are some of ones I can think of

Re: Wyes in Michigan
CSX Plymouth
CSX Wyoming Yard (pretty much locomotives, only)
CSX Sunnyside (adjacent to the former Amtrak depot in Grand Rapids)
GLC Cadillac (again, short tail, so pretty much locomotives, only)
Lenawee Junction on the A&B
Ludington on Marquette Rail
Walhalla on Marquette Rail
Baldwin on Marquette Rail
Berry Jct (between Muskegon and Whitehall) on Michigan Shore
The GLC wye at the former PM Boardman Yard in Traverse City still looks intact in Google's satellite view, but I thought that I read something over the past few years saying that it's out of service, or partially removed.

Fritz didn't mention the wye in GR over at Grandville/Market/Wealthy ex Amtrak Shack.. We turned engines there a lot. So then two wyes on CSX in GRP.

Kalamazoo, Berry Junction (north of Muskegon), Holland, Grand Rapids (Sunnyside), Grand Rapids (Wyoming yard), Plymouth, Durand, CN Flint (I believe there's still one on the old Delphi West branch), CSX Flint (Mcgrew), Bay City, Saginaw, Alma, Cadillac, Badlwin, Walhalla, and Alpena are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Re: Wyes in Michigan
I wonder how often they use these wyes, and do they turn a whole train or just a loco or two? The one in Traverse city was used 2-3 years ago according to my friend that works at WLJN right next to the wye.

Re: Wyes in Michigan
Most of the time a wye is used to turn an engine or a set of engines. CSX will sometimes turn boxcars in Grand Rapids for Victor Barnes that can only be unloaded on one side.

Re: Wyes in Michigan
Many of the Wyes left are junction points, used more to change routes that directions. The wyes at Sunnyside, Plymouth, Holland, Barry, Baldwin, Walhalla, Ludington and Alma can fall into this category.

Re: Wyes in Michigan
Ludington wasn't a jct point. It's there for turning power and getting down the hill to oxy. At one point Baldwin had a wye on each side of the diamonds. The north west leg was just cut back a few years ago when they paved Astor road.

Re: Wyes in Michigan
While not built as a "Y", Delray in Detroit is a wye and is used for tunring power for both CSXT and NS. Each leg is a different railroad. One leg is CSXT (C&O), one leg is NS (Wabash) and the third leg is Conrail -DSAA (PRR). Three different control points too. NS Bridge, Delray and Rougemere yardmaster.
