I am not aware of any Magna plants that ship by rail...at least in MI

According to reports in the local media, a new spur is being laid off the GLC in Mc Bain to serve the industrial park and Viking Energy. The news report indicate the Viking will begin receiving fuel shipments by rail. The first phase, which is not defined, is scheduled for completion at the end of 2014.

They are they new customer already being served- the used ties are currently transloaded in Cadillac and trucked back to McBain.

Thanks for the update. I just noticed on AANScalerunner's update that used ties were headed into Cadillac and wondered if they were headed to Viking or to the plant in Cadillac.

The Cadillac News has a more in depth article on this. Mentions extending the spur even further into the industrial park and also a possible shared warehouse for companies who want shipments by rail.

Inbound railroad ties have been very heavy. As many as 30-40 at a time. I don't know if it'll continue at this pace or not, though.

It sounds like part of the Buick City property will be getting rail service right quick.

The link below takes you to an article about AmericanSpiralWeld, which is a company building water pipes (sounds like reloading to flat cars) on the site.

They say trains will begin operating to the location in the next 7-10 days. I am assuming these will just be cars on the Toledo-Flint train rather than a dedicated unit train, correct?

Maybe there could be some hope for rebuilding some rail use inside the Buick City property. There is a lot of space and rail access is available.

Does anyone know, is there still railroad track into the plant site, or has it been pulled up when the plant was torn down.

Based on satellite imagery the trackage in the old plant is largely inctact, though much of it might be cut-off...but that could be easily fixed.

I find it both amazing and sad that you have this huge plot of land that could be rebuilt and repurposed to provide jobs for hundreds to thousands of people, but yet nothing seems to be going on there until this relatively small project. I know there have been proposals for the land, but you would think this could be a prime industrial park type area which would bring in multiple employers to help an economically damaged area, yet nothing is being done.

What's really sad is the longer this area sits in Flint almost unused, the hard it will be to get people willing and able to fill the jobs that could be created.

You have to take into account the liability still owned by GM, or old GM. There is bound to be contamination under any old auto plant. By law the "polluter" has to clean it up. There is a pile of politics that slow this down. Why would I build on top of this, and have someone come down the line in another 10 years, and say we are here to clean up, you will lose part of your parking lot at the very least for a month or two. Or, I will be affecting your operations while we perform remediation

Automotive Supplier building two plants in Michigan..the possibility of rail service is questionable though...Although one of two facilities is going into a former GM Pontiac East Assembly Plant at 2100 South Opdyke Road.

I don't think anything from the stamping plant goes by rail. The only auto traffic handled by CN is outbound new vehicles from Rail Port. CSX doesn't handle any auto traffic from the Lansing area either, that I know of.

They are building the stamping plant so they won't have to ship stamps by rail rom another stamping plant.
