While attending a celebration of life ceremony in Greenville IL, took a little jaunt down to Carlyle to check things out....there is what looks like an inactive rail line running east-west thru town....looks that way account of the crossing protection lights were turned sideways and the gates were removed....anybody have any info on this line??

That would be the CSX Illinois Subdivision. Previous owners were the B&O/C&O, ran between Washington, Indiana and St. Louis, Missouri. About 160 miles.

I provided a link to a website dedicated to just that particular rail line. Also gives a timeline of events leading up to it’s abandonment toward the bottom. Quite the read.

That is the ex B&O main from Cinncanti Ohio to St Louis Missouri. It went out of service back in 2015. All of the traffic got shifted on the more double tracked CSX ex Conrail St Louis Line to the north. The line is currently in service in Ohio, across Indiana and into Olney IL. Only Grain trains go to Olney IL to serve a grain facility there. From Olney IL to St Louis MO it is abandoned with many crossings taken out and few stretches of track left. It used to be a decently busy line until the Conrail split with multiple trains a day but all of that is a distant memory now. Makes me wonder why CSX hung on to the Plymouth and Grand Rapids Subs for so long when they have a fully double tracked main across Ohio and Indiana to run trains on. Still hoping CPKC gets it but that is another topic for a different day.

At one time, The Prairie Line was supposed to get the west end of this line, but I believe that fell through. Was around 5ish years ago.

Doesn't appear that it was ever abandonned? It is out of service with the crossings out of service, thus not requiring the same level of inspection as an in service rail line does. There appears to be no abandonment petition for the line, only discontinuance of service petitions.
