Where do those numbers come from?
Lenses are marked with a series of f-stops, each one lets in half as much light as the previous one. The light-gathering ability of a lens is determined by its area, and f-stops are determined by diameter. Area is related to diameter squared. The progression of f-stops, 1 - 1.4 - 2 - 2.8 - 4 - 5.6 - 8 - 11 - 16 - 22 - 32, are powers of the square root of 2.
I always try to stick to the "root" f-stops as listed above. It just makes more sense to me, and is easier to figure out when adjusting shutter speed and ISO in relation to f-stops. If you're at f8 and shooting 1/500, if you go to f5.6 that means the relative shutter speed will be 1/1000th. When I see people use f-stops in between the ones listed above, I just scratch my head and wonder if they REALLY understand f-stops to begin with.

When I see people bypass F 6.3 and F 7.1, makes me scratch my head wondering if they really know how to use 1/3 stops on their camera. Bypassing 6.3 and 7.1 makes about as much sense as skipping shutter speeds 1/640 and 1/800.

So...what's one stop down from f6.3 (or 7.1 for that matter)? :P

Yeah, maybe rp.net should start rejecting pictures using the wrong f-stops.

a stop down from 6.3 is f9.0, and a stop down from 7.1 is f10.
In case you'd ask, a stop up from 6.3 is 4.5, and 7.1 up to 5.0.

And Chuck, while it's sometimes entertaining to see your hatred towards a photographer like JT, please stop trolling.. if you have nothing else to comment on the board but to troll him, go away please. I can pick fights with JT as he knows I'm a better photographer; that's why he refuses to go on railfanning journeys with me, even when I offer to drive or pay gas, lolz :)
