How do you go about finding them? I assume you don’t listen to all 10 or so hours of radio action that happens. How would I be able to access them in the future?

If you pay for Broadcastify, you have access to a year's worth of archives.
I imagine Tom trims the silence, finds the train they're looking for and figures out where the call is in the original file to determine the time.

It's $30 per year for their Premium membership & you get no commercials & can review past radio calls for up to 1 year. The calls are marked in half hour blocks. Recently, the CSX Michigan West Scanner Archives were changed where it stores the entire half hour, including the "dead air time". So, when a call is heard there, I can pin point the time it was made. The other Archives still use the old format where they only store the amount call time in each saved half hour block (if only say 4 minutes of calls were heard during that half hour, that's all that is stored & a call time cannot be pin pointed).
Just click onto the "Premium" box in the right upper corner when you go to their site.

Hi, I'm going thru the overnight Broadcastify scanner archives now looking for them.
D706-27 @ 02:43 eastward was reported by the DD mp CH126.3 with 260 axles. CSXT engine #901 & 62 cars & rear dpu CSXT #982.

D706-27 @ 03:50 stopped at the east end of Lake Odessa mp CH120.4
D706-27 @ 04:40 requested by the RN Dispatcher to go to channel 14 (unfortunately, that scanner is off line).
D706-27 @ 04:54 eastward on the move & had reported from mp CH119.

D706-27 @ 05:21 eastward reported by the DD mp CH104.3 with 260 axles & 3,783 feet long.

Typically, the DD104.3 report is the maximum range for this scanner, sometimes you'll hear as far as mp CH95 & last week I had gotten really lucky & had heard the DD at mp CH79.9 clearly reporting.

D705-27 not logged yet as of 08:58 (beyond this scanner's range).
