Honoring the memory of Detroit Ladderman Anthony Korte who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the citizens of Detroit.

Ladderman Korte died on May 17, 1895 from injuries he received while returning from a fire on St. Aubin Avenue. Hook & Ladder #5 was crossing railroad tracks on Canfield Avenue when it was hit by a Lake Shore and Michigan Southern freight train.

Korte was thrown from the rig and landed with a pitchfork piercing his head into his brain. For 10 days following the accident, Anthony clung to life. For a short time he regaining consciousness enough to recognizing his wife. Ultimately his injuries proved to be fatal.

Ladderman Korte was 26 years old. He had been with the Fire Department for 5 years. Anthony left behind a wife and three children.
