The greater part of career was spent in the investigation and remediation of these kinds of sites.
In some cases the mess was a result of ignorance. No one knew that dumping oil or whatever on the ground or in the water was detrimental. In other cases the mess resulted from an accident. I didn’t mind working on those projects. As Dr. No pointed out, all to many times the result was fueled by greed and avarice. More than a few times I passed on projects where the responsible party was trying to get out of their obligation without doing the right thing.
I have seen some amazing sights. Glad I don’t do that any longer.
