LSRC Meet! 6-4-21

Unread post by atrainguy60 »

I saw a heads up on Facebook that an empty coal train was on it's way south from Flint, so I went to intercept it at Newark (a few miles south of Grand Blanc). I was quite happy to immediately find the train slowing to a stop on the main to meet a northbound, who's headlight was already visible a few miles away. Interestingly, the northbound turned out to be a welded rail train:

A few minutes after the rail train cleared the crossing, the coal train got the clear signal to continue south:

I don't think I've ever seen freight cars being hauled on a welded rail train.
Maybe they thought 4 covered hoppers were needed to prevent headaches.

Any information on it's intended destination, and where it is going to be laid down ??

Nice videos -- thanks for posting! Longest distance between passing sidings is Newark to Clyde. Often put northbounds in hole at Newark and told them "you're there for the parade" as they waited for 3 or 4 southbounds to pass. 'Twas better after we got siding at Grand Blanc and southbounds didn't have to hold the main track to make their pick ups. All a moot point now.

IIRC it's going north of Bay City but I don't recall exactly where. Might have to check out the latest LSRC newsletter 8) .

The welded rail train is for the Huron Sub (original D&M mainline).

Thanks! Man, I'd love to have a time machine and go back to the 60s or 70s Saginaw Sub. I was born in '97, so it's really hard for me to picture just how busy that line used to be.

It was a different world back then on the Saginaw Sub -- in Michigan as a whole. But, just so you know I don't take myself too seriously 8)

Doesn't matter how many times it's talked about, I always love hearing about what it was like before my time on the train lines I frequently fan, especially the train counts and operations.
