Arsenal of Freedom at SRI in Owosso

Unread post by thatcheb »

The Steam Railroading Institute, in partnership with the Military Vehicle Collectors Club of Michigan, is presenting "Arsenal of Freedom" on its Owosso facility June 23 & 24, 2023. This event will celebrate the support railroads have provided to America's military for over 150 years. Over thirty restored historic military vehicles (including three World War II amphibious vehicles) will be on display. Other activities include PM #1225 cab tours (it will be fired up!), caboose rides, military vehicle activities, food vendors on site and much more. Free admission!

As those who follow the news are aware, there has long been an overall shortage of skilled tradesmen and shop capacity, often leading to delays. Those overhauling steam locomotives are not immune.

So, PM #1225 may be reassembled by “Arsenal of Freedom” but likely not fired up. It will be on display, and those attending can learn more about what it takes to keep ancient machinery running.

On a more positive note, all of the planned rail and military vehicle activities will take place (we’re past 31 vehicles, and more may be coming). Some very interesting activities involving both rail and military equipment are planned.
