Michigan Shore MMRR #2170's Horn

Unread post by jaykirks »

MMRR #2170's horn doesn't sound so good, it must be completely fouled, or some horn bells have been frozen, did they give it a new horn?
I've noticed the changes in its horn over the last couple years. It sounds like it's been slowly losing it's tune overtime. :(
In the first video was its original horn, but in the 2nd video it sounds like it shifted it's tune since April 2021 and now in the last video it sounds completely different. :?: :(

Unfortunately Leslie horns are very easily fouled by debris, affecting their sound. They require a fair amount of upkeep to keep them sounding good. That’s why most railroads have switched to Nathan horns. 2170’s horn is fouled and isn’t voicing properly, I would guess if it gets worse they will put a new horn on it soon.

Oh no, that's too bad :( . Hopefully they're gonna work on it.
Hopefully they decide to put a nice K5LA on it (like GR #3839's) if there is no luck.
By the way, does anyone know if something happened to MMRR #2057's horn for them to put a new horn on MMRR #2019?

The last video of mine, the one in the snow, the horn was just very plugged up, I looked at it close and it was just packed with snow.

This video is also 2023 present.

Thanks! I figured it would have something to do with the horn being plugged from the snow. I love the Michigan Shore Railroad! I enjoy your videos of the MSRR!

Have you noticed that MMRR 2170's horn sounds a bit different since April 2021?
When I heard it on the Michigan Shore in October 2020 it sounded like this which reminded me of a former Michigan Shore engine: MMRR 180/MS 180.
1.) MMRR #2170's horn (October 2020 - April 2021): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYkkHuphTic
2.) MMRR #180: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xfis
3.) MS #180: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z-mdY8NInE&t=3s
4.) MS #180: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op1KCTbOgi8

After April 2021, I've noticed that its horn changed a bit in its tune which reminded me of another former Michigan Shore engine: CF&E #3885.
1.) MMRR #2170's horn (April 2021 - Present): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmPUf4NvaTw&t=189s
2.) CF&E #3885: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8GAkIA8YJs&t=2s

It's pretty cool how MMRR #2170 can sound like both MS #180 then CF&E #3885 reminding me of the good times in the past when the Michigan Shore had a variety power of locomotive engines!

I have noticed a lot, I’m wishing that they change the horn now, it’s a very fouled/bad sounding P5 (I’m pretty sure)
Although, will be sad if they replace it.

Actually it's a Leslie R3SL that may have become fouled since then. MMRR #2019 has the P5 horn.
I thought MMRR #2170 had a new horn at first when I noticed the change in the horn.
