Lake State is adding 6 SD70M locomotives to our fleet. The first unit, LSRC 6431 is freshly painted at Metro East Industries in East St. Louis. Photo credit Mark Mautner.

Never thought I'd ever see this paint job on a widecab, when are they going to enter service??

I like to see the new Units and glad to see LSRC expanding their business.

Will LSRC be selling off any locomotives when these arrive? I see they scrapped SD40 #5921 earlier this year (which at one point was slated to be rebuilt).

Doubtful. They're going to need all the power they can get in the coming years. 5921 was unfortunately beyond repair.

Perfect I know what I’ll being doing a couple times this summer. We haven’t had sd70ms here in so long ever since NS got rid of them in 2019. Some of my favorite locomotives. The LSRC ones are beauties

6 engines for the PH&D would be about 3 engines too many from what I would guess.

Obviously not just the PHD.

Additional run-thru trains to Wahlbridge make sense given the rack biz.

Per LocoNotes on May 31:
"Fresh LSRC SD70Ms 6431 & 6432 sighted this evening in Kankakee, IL."

Took A407 NB to Kirk Yard last night. Still in Kirk Yard today. Might get out on the next A492?

I've heard rumors that these 6 engines are going to replace the SD50's (because, well, they're SD50's, no explanation needed) and that LSRC is possibly looking into buying some more SD70M's, can anyone confirm this?

I wouldn't think so. They are SD50-3's as far as I know, rebuilt by CSX. I think they are downgraded (HP wise) and have new electrics. Basically a more modern sd40-2.

I also thought they were essentially SD40-2's

They were all “SD50-2s” at CSX, which basically involved disabling notches 7 and 8 to limit them to 3000 HP. They were absolutely awful. MEI did some “rebuilding” on them but I have never met an LSRC employee yet who has anything nice to say about their SD50s. They’ve had a lot of issues with them.

On the Z127/L313/4 run thru power agreements, the SD70Ms will be paired. They can lead so that will save CSX time from wyeing the power sets at Wahlbridge. Also, supposedly they are more fuel efficient than the SD50s which CSX will also enjoy.
