As soon as the Class One's run out of costs to cut they will either have to pay decent dividends or start showing revenue growth to keep Wall Street appeased. Maybe CN along with BNSF will be ahead of that curve.

Something is telling me this is somewhat related to the KCS merger falling through but isn't considering this was planned....

I'm guessing he's leaving the company because I think he ruined CN's reputation due to the whole CN-CP-KCS situation, But there's a problem with that, It isn't because the company says it isn't planned. I just have my doubts, That's all.

CN was an earnings miss for three straight quarters before this latest quarter, and their operating ratio has been off even prior to the pandemic. The failure of the KCS merger was icing on the cake. The institutional investors were not happy. Ruest thought for sure that CP would counter with a higher offer when CN made their unsolicited bid. That was also a huge miscalculation. It would seem that Creel and the CP board knew from the start that CN would never get the green light from the regulators, so they simply bided their time until CN was forced to bow out.
