Throwback Thursday: Michigan Shore Railroad

Unread post by jaykirks »

It's been 4 years since the former Michigan Shore Railroad GP38 locomotive MMRR #2057 (formerly Grand Rapids Eastern (GP38) #3839) left the Michigan Shore to be sent to the MQT (Marquette Rail) in October 2017, leaving MMRR #2019 the only locomotive on the Michigan Shore ...

After that, a Huron & Eastern locomotive HESR #2025 replaced 2057's position in April in 2018 before it was sent off to Bay City recently in April, which leaves the primary G&W loco Mid Michigan Railroad (GP38) #2019 and another Mid Michigan Railroad (GP38-2) MMRR #2170 that was assigned as the new MMRR sister back in October last year on the Michigan Shore.
I wonder how MMRR #2057 is currently doing after 4 years out of town...(20:57 PM)

Still running up North. Go see it kicking around Manistee.

Thanks, but unfortunately I have no way to Manistee, I usually check for new videos of MMRR #2057 running in Manistee or Baldwin.

I miss hearing the horn on 2057. Many nights I would lay in bed and hear it echo up Spring Lake. There is something unique about that horn, or valve or maybe just the way it is plumbed to the tank.

I couldn't agree more! I always love the horn on the 2057! It's definitely one of the reasons why I miss seeing MMRR #2057. I just wonder why that one had to be the one to be sent away from the Michigan Shore. I've been wondering what happened to it's old K5LA it used to have when it was Grand Rapids Eastern #3839 before it was given the old K5LA horn that MMRR #2019 used to have. I think all of the reasons maybe why it sounds so great and so unique!

At the time, MS only needed one unit, while MQT needed extra power. 2057 just happened to be the one sent over there.

MMRR #2057 was in Grand Rapids last year in March to help out while GRE #2104 was getting repaired before it was sent back to Manistee, I was pleased by the videos of it in Grand Rapids.

Yes, it was, and the crews hated it. 2104 is a much better unit, I’m told.

Yes, I see
GR 2104 (formely CF&E #3885) is a GP38-2 which is better and MMRR #2057 (was GR #3839) is only a GP38.

2104 is in Manistee currently getting traction motors replaced. Not sure what’s running GR in the meanwhile.

Also, new video posted of 5106 in 1996 before 3839 and 2057:
