The Whistle Shop

Unread post by DelayInBlock »

The Whistle Shop in Waterford, Michigan manufactures replica whistles of REAL steam engines. Jason Aurand, the owner, has been involved with welding and manufacturing products for over ten years. However, his love of trains has been with him since his childhood. In this video, you'll see Jason test out his replica whistle of Norfolk & Western 611, which is based off of the real whistle 611 wore (now owned by Preston Claytor). You'll also get a tour of Jason's outdoor museum featuring signals and other railroad signage. You'll also get to tour Jason's shop and see him working on a replica whistle of Pere Marquette 1225.

Not only does Jason build custom whistles - he also builds custom railroad signs out of wood or cement (by choice of customer), repairs heavy equipment, does work on historic tractors, and builds wood burning stoves. There are three original N&W issued whistles that 611 wore. One, to my knowledge, is in a museum, and the other two are owned by private collectors, with Claytor being one of them.

I'm pretty sure sometimes with these steam whistles if someone owns a specific one (like the 611's) they might loan it to the steam engine, or another steamer to run with excursions.. DIB probably knows better considering he seams to have talked to some people and worked with some of the whistles. I recall some DVDs and YouTube videos where excursions were using whistles from privite collections.

I don't see Claytor owning one of them an issue, the family ties to railroading he has would make me think he would let them use it.

Jason makes some really incredible whistles. I know for a fact a few of the tourist lines have gotten replacement whistles from him.

He is also thinking about getting into producing equipment for 7 1/2" scale.
