Looked like a bunch of camp cars to me. They are used to house MOW crews.

That train came out of Jackson with the camp cars and flats for the track equipment for the rail gang that did some work recently; heard it was heading to Alliance after it waited in Toledo for a cab-signal leader.

Not sure why they put that train in Jackson as NS changed out some rail just west of the 37 signal and Willow run would have been much closer--unless there was some work done in the Jackson area I don't know about.

As for the UP engine--it came thru to Jackson on the 39E/B44 train and probably the motive power desk just picked that engine to take that train outta town.

Huh, I thought a judge had ruled camp cars as illegal? Or was that just in Indiana?

That's why they're running it under cover of darkness!

I've seen 'em on NS in/around Toledo in the last year or so and I know they've generally gone out of style but apparently NS still uses them at times.

Here's a set going into the Stanley Secondary earlier this year:

Why would a judge rule them illegal? :?: Or What was the legal question he ruled on? :?:

It's Top Secret, and only moves under cover of darkness.

Actually, Charlie and I saw that train going north through Wyandotte late one night last summer. They are camp cars.

Quick web search found this interesting post on the topic from 2 years ago - obviously they're still using them:

The Law in Indiana amounted to something akin to "Cruel and Unusual Punishment." They didn't have running water, nor plumbing facilities (toilets, showers, etc). Extremely drafty and hot in the summer. It was NS's way of getting out of having to put the MOW crews up in Hotels for the evening with better facilities.

NS had a tie gang working the Columbus District this summer using the camp cars. At both Chillicothe and Portsmouth the cars were hooked up to water and electric outlets. The cars looked freshly painted and such. I would prefer a hotel-motel over those cars.

Maybe they were sent to JAIL then. And the other night they made a JAIL break.

Sorry, had to.

Bet if NS would do some pencil pushing it would be cheaper to use a hotel than camp cars.

Caught a camp car train in Toledo today and while researching NS R-10 to try to figure out what gang this was came across this interesting video:

And an interesting promotional video about Camp Cars put out by NS:
