NKP 765 going to Michigan

Unread post by GLC 392 »

Celebrate the glorious fall foliage behind a Lima Berkshire! This year, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society's Nickel Plate Road 765 will be powering the Steam Railroading Institute's fall excursion to Cadillac, Michigan on October 16th. This extraordinary train will depart from "Scotland USA", Alma, Michigan at 9 a.m., with a planned arrival into Cadillac at 12:30 p.m. Following a 2 ½ hour visit of downtown Cadillac, the passengers will board at 3 p.m. for a scheduled 7:00 p.m. return to Alma. Coach tickets start at $125 each. First Class tickets are $200.

On October 23rd, NKP 765 will be hauling our "Autumn in Alma" special from the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso to Alma and return. Board at 9 AM at the Steam Railroading Institute, where we will travel to Alma, Michigan, "Scotland USA", home of Alma College. Explore and stroll through Alma's quaint downtown, and then board for any early afternoon return to SRI, where you will be able to explore the Steam Railroading Institute's Owosso Site and PM #1225, currently undergoing repair and restoration for its mandatory FRA inspection, or stroll through downtown Owosso. Coach seats are $99 for this event.

This time routing is going to be a very interesting thing. Can't wait to chase NKP 765 in Michigan once again!

Well if I'm not in Pennsylvania, I'll sure be chasing this. Does anybody know if they'll keep the 765 a longer than October?

Since the 765 will be here in Ohio this September it probably will go from here directly to Michigan I'd guess but obviously my guess means nothing. I could see it departing Cleveland going to the NS Toledo East sub up to Toledo and then onto the AA and GLC. Makes the most sense.

That was my thoughts exactly. I can't see NS pulling 765 back to Ft Wayne to haul it out again a week or so later. On the other hand, what they could do is, send it up the NS Detroit Line to Oakwood, then West to Milan and the AA. Now, that would be footage I would KILL to shoot. Going by Monroe, the old Depot at Wyandotte, pace it along Metro Airport, and then go out near Belleville, that would make my year!

:D :)  Well this is a great birthday gift! I just read this today! Now I am happy at age 27! My Dad's old saying for every birthday was: "I've Never Been This Old Before." I love that saying and myself am using it too! My Dad's quotes will now live on through me!

I love it that #765 will come back! I've never had the chance to photograph her! When the fest happened last year, I couldn't make it because of the aweful accident that I was in. I was still recovering then and also was last Oct!

I guess now I have another chance! (I knew that I would some time though)
It shall be fun! Hope this all works out! We shall see!

If they routed it that way, at some point the locomotive would ahve to be wyed.... Wonder how many pages the speculation thread about the routing is going to get to....

Apparently not many...

However as October approaches; does anyone have any updated info on a potential time/route. I would assume it is going to take the AA again. What do we think, the week before? two weeks before? I'm starting to get stuff on my October schedule and want to try and slot in time to chase!

This weekend my father and I are heading down to Ohio see 765. Riding the train Saturday, and chasing it on Sunday. After this weekend Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society is gong to prep the locomotive for the move to Owosso, Michigan. It's got 2 ways to get to Michigan:

Route #1

Lakeshore & Michigan Southern (Mainline)
- Cleveland
- Sandusky
- Toledo

Michigan Central (Downriver)
- Monroe
- Trenton
- Wyandotte
- Ecorse
- Detroit

Wabash (Mainline)
- Melvindale
- Taylor
- Romulus
- Belleville
- Milan

Ann Arbor
- Ann Arbor
- Hamburg
- Howell
- Durand
- Owosso

Route #2

Wheeling & Lake Erie
- Akron
- Creston
- Wellington
- Bellevue
- Oak Harbor
- Toledo

Ann Arbor
- Alexis
- Diann
- Milan
- Ann Arbor
- Hamburg
- Howell
- Durand
- Owosso

Routing will be via WLE to Bellvue, NS Toledo District to Toledo then across the Wheeling Bridge in Toledo for interchange with Ann Arbor then to GLC at Osmer.

Biggest question is if it will be considered an NS train on the Toledo District or a Wheeling train using trackage rights.

My guess... It will have a "KL" symbol on the Toledo District. Hope to get off so I can get some footage at Oak Harbor.
