On one hand, the NYC heritage unit deserves all the h*ll it’s gone through since it was unveiled.

On the other hand, the DOT better whoop the truck drivers ass, that was just so stupid.

So my old eyes can’t clearly see why the truck driver didn’t back up?

he didn't want to break the gate.
poor thought process led him to enter activated crossing. no surprise that poor thought process kept him there.
hard to explain that away when it was caught on video.

Actually, the gate was between the tractor and trailer. Driver made the wrong choice, big time.

That’s a United moving van semi. That’s somebody’s household inside that trailer. Unreal.

Usually, for moving, they use a different type of trailer, one that is lower to the ground. Could be United movers, or trailer rental,or anything--- can not make out the other printing on the logo. Trailer did not appear to be damaged, but the sharp sudden whack by the train did not help anything. One thing for sure---- tractor is history,as the drivers license and job should be also.Mixer driver could see it coming, and backed away-- at least someone had a logical thought.

My thoughts exactly

I would assume these gates are designed to break away in cases like this, correct?

I do not understand this at all. Anytime this happens when a vehicle is caught between a gate and the crossing no matter how big or small people just freeze up and don't even bother to try and move. I can't see any traffic in front of the truck, but if there wasn't he could've gotten out of the way in time no doubt. The gates are designed to break and bend, is that not worth some paint scratches on your car or truck?
