Deshler Station

Unread post by DaveO »

Checking in on the railcam the last few days I've noticed several trucks parked around the station.
Wondering if anyone has an idea why?
Prep for demo? Renovation?
Given the wall on the southside I'm not putting bets on renovation.
A quick online search didn't return anything of interest.

If I remember correctly, CSX uses it as a place to put old railroad crossings and signals, it could be just that but I could be wrong.

Thank you. I had only seen vehicles parked. Hadn't seen human activity even using rewind a few times.

I rewound on the camera yesterday and saw two dudes in white outfits that looked like hazmat suits.

It will be interesting to see if they gut it out and restore the station for historic reasons or just knock it down. It wouldn't take must to knock it down. I heard a year ago it was gong to be demolished so we shall see.

It's current location isn't a public access friendly site.
It would have to be moved.
Based on stories, the structure is compromised.
So before you move it you would have to fix it.
Then there is the normal work needed after you move a building.
Since an asbestos abatement crew is onsite, a date with a demo contractor is likely in the near future.

Almost certainly the reason why it has taken this long to demolish the structure is the presence of asbestos. Sounds like somebody finally determined that it was worth spending the money to clean it up.

It should nicely improve the sight lines from the park looking north. It was always an eyesore anyway, with the tower a much nicer building to keep around as a photo prop anyway.

Is there a timeline as to when it will be torn down? I need to get some more shots of it

More like someone at the top of the food chain said "tear it down, NOW!"

Was the 2002 derailment what did the structure in? Or was it languishing before that?

The Safety First sign next to a pile of wrecked rail cars is priceless. And can tell you that this can be a dangerous hobby.

That building is historic to town, Deshler wouldn’t even EXIST if it wasn’t built, appreciate that it still exists.

Nice article that asks for money a couple seconds after loading... anyway, while I knew our very own StupidFleet aka Chinese Food was involved with the Bartlow Township Historical Society, didn't know he was president. Nice job SF!
