Moraine/West Carrollton Question

Unread post by 937TrainFan »

Hope everyone is staying safe out there. I am doing some research on the NS Dayton District and have some questions I'm hoping you all might be able to answer.

1.) What's the current status of the NS Moraine Yard? I heard rumblings that it was closed now and the last time I drove by it looked bone empty. Did the local Dayton area operations get moved somewhere else like Reed Yard?

2.) Looking at old Conrail ZTS maps I see there are some siding tracks by the Appvion plant in West Carrollton called "Carrollton New Yard". Anyone have any history on that small yard? And does Appvion still get rail shipments?

Many thanks if anyone can answer these questions.

Moraine is dead and just a bare corpse rusting away in the weeds. Everything moved to Reed.

Penn Central built the “New Yard” back in ‘71 or ‘72 to support the West Carrollton paper mills. Domtar bought the mill maybe 18 months ago. Rail traffic really has rebound since then and probably the most it’s been in 20 years.
