GLOR has reached an agreement with CSX and LSRC to purchase a short section of trackage in Carrolton. The line, which runs 1.15 miles from a connection with the GLOR mainline. The line previously served Gavilon and a Lafarge Terminal. A current propery owner is planning on using a property along the line as a transload for bulk shipments of stone, sand, and other building material.
This will add to the customers along the GLOR's

GLOR has recently completed the purchase of 57 open hoppers from the ICN. These cars had previously been in service for the GLOR and HESR in sugar beet service before being sold to ICN for stone service. They have been leased back from the ICN for sugar beet service recently and became surplus when ICN purchased 130 ex-CN hoppers for the stone service.
These cars will be supplemented by an additional purchase 50 ex-BN open hoppers to be used in the sugar beet service. All 107 cars will be transported to the GLOR's Delta Car Repair Shops for repair and storage before being used in the beet service this fall.
There will be a new customer going in on the Baldwin-Clare line this summer.
Morgan Composting in Sears, Michigan is adding a siding to along the branch to service their composting business. They will be expanding their service production as they have entered into an agreement to haul the excess cutting slices and "debris" from the 4 GLOR serviced Michigan Sugar plants in the thumb region. Currently Michigan Sugar only sells off a portion of the cutting slices due to regulatory issues with selling them as compost. Morgan Composting meets all the legal requirements to be able to compost the beet scraps and as such will receive the benefit of a substantial volume of new compost "feedstock" and Michigan Sugar will receive a boost by being able to profit from the previously waste products from the sugar beets.
Morgan Composting's siding will include a loading dock to load finished compost into boxcars for transport to their Marion Warehouse and packaging plants. Some of this compost will be back hauled to the thump for compost on the beet farmers fields.
This will not impact the sale of a portion of the sugar beet "waste" to sugar beet pellet manufacturing companies who are already under contract with Michigan Sugar.
An added benfit of this agreement will be additional use for the purchased beet hoppers for a longer portion of the year.

Currently Michigan Sugar only sells off a portion of the cutting slices due to regulatory issues with selling them as compost. Morgan Composting meets all the legal requirements to be able to compost the beet scraps and as such will receive the benefit of a substantial volume of new compost "feedstock" and Michigan Sugar will receive a boost by being able to profit from the previously waste products from the sugar beets.
Morgan Composting's siding will include a loading dock to load finished compost into boxcars for transport to their Marion Warehouse and packaging plants. Some of this compost will be back hauled to the thump for compost on the beet farmers fields.
This will not impact the sale of a portion of the sugar beet "waste" to sugar beet pellet manufacturing companies who are already under contract with Michigan Sugar.
An added benfit of this agreement will be additional use for the purchased beet hoppers for a longer portion of the year.

Some of this is rooted in fact. I don't know about now, but Michigan Sugar used to give away compost material from their plants because they couldn't actually sell it due to laws on what qualified as compost. Per my source, who worked for Michigan Sugar, the stuff would do wonders for growing your yard. Remember even in the best years sugar beets are only about 17% sugar.

There is an update on the Avoca Biodisel plant.
Final Appoval has been given to build this plant, and the plant general contractor has been selected.
The DTE /GLOR applications for grant money to rebuild the Brown City to Avoca portion of the line have also been approved. The plant construction is estimated to take two years, with the plant going into operation in July 2026. The DTE Greenwood Energy Center expansion is also expected to enter service at approximately the same time.
The contract for gravel from Big Cut Gravel for State of Michigan projects has been renewed for another year. Cars are expected to follow the same routing as previous years, M&BC to LSRC, to GLOR to destination site. Currently three locations on the GLOR are expected to recieve cars for the State of Michigan projects this construction season. One is Cadillac, the second is in Grand Rapids (Hughart Yard) and the third is Verplank in Grand Haven.
Construction on the Buckey Yard Rebuild is progressing.
The reconstruction of the line between Coldwater and Sturgis is also beginning. Insprections have determined that the line is structurally ok as excepted track, but will require tie replacement at 50% of existing ties to be able to be upgraded to Class 1. No washouts of the line were detected. The roadbed is in need of some minor repairs. Work on the tie replacement project will commence upon completion of the Buckeye Yard project.
GLOR will be looking at an opening in late 2024 or early 2025 for this reconnected line. Upon completion of the connection rebuild, the White Pigeon Subdivison will be folder into the INER Division and removed from the Lake Michigan Subdivision. GLOR has obtained 20 acres west of Coldwater for the purpose of build a small interchange yard. This will be utilized by the GLOR's trains to exchange cars destined for points west and east on the INER subdivision.
