The Lawrence & Ontario Railroad

Unread post by Derektrainman03 »

The Lawrence & Ontario Railroad (Reporting marks: L&O) was a fallen flag class 2 railroad that once dominated New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, The northern parts of Massachusetts and the town of Lawrence, MA as the head quarters for the railroad, and the Ontario part of Canada. The railroad was established on June 10th, 1899. The railroad started with various steam locomotives and had interesting parts of the mainline one of them was the Valley line (See the Crescent Valley Railroad for more details) the year was now 1929, the Great Depression was now the problem of the world. And unfortunately, the L&O was one of the victims to be effected. The railroad company Rail Ontario filed for bankruptcy and the railroad was sold to the Ticonderoga railroad. By the Second World War, the Ticonderoga sold the railroad to a new private company called Rico Corporation. After the war a man named Joseph D. Furgeston became the first to buy the ill fated L&O and revived the railroad back to its former glory. On December 25, 1954 the railroad was ready to dieselize the rails. And only 2% of the steam locomotives were saved while the rest were scrapped. The L&O had a interesting paint scheme on the diesels the first was Black letters, Red background and Yellow foreground. By the 1970s the paint scheme then became Blue lettering, yellow, and Red foreground. This 70s paint scheme remained until the 2000s where is was bought by the Moxie Corp Railway. But on June 2019, the railroad was then bankrupt and then was merged with the Ticonderoga railroad. To this day, most of the tracks belong to 4 railroads the 2 most were the: Ticonderoga, Moxie Corp, then the regional rail CVRR, and last but not least the Swanson & Western railway.
