March 24th, 2024 Update:

GLOR has recently completed the purchase of 57 open hoppers from the ICN. These cars had previously been in service for the GLOR and HESR in sugar beet service before being sold to ICN for stone service. They have been leased back from the ICN for sugar beet service recently and became surplus when ICN purchased 130 ex-CN hoppers for the stone service.

These cars will be supplemented by an additional purchase 50 ex-BN open hoppers to be used in the sugar beet service. All 107 cars will be transported to the GLOR's Delta Car Repair Shops for repair and storage before being used in the beet service this fall.

There will be a new customer going in on the Baldwin-Clare line this summer.

Morgan Composting in Sears, Michigan is adding a siding to along the branch to service their composting business. They will be expanding their service production as they have entered into an agreement to haul the excess cutting slices and "debris" from the 4 GLOR serviced Michigan Sugar plants in the thumb region. Currently Michigan Sugar only sells off a portion of the cutting slices due to regulatory issues with selling them as compost. Morgan Composting meets all the legal requirements to be able to compost the beet scraps and as such will receive the benefit of a substantial volume of new compost "feedstock" and Michigan Sugar will receive a boost by being able to profit from the previously waste products from the sugar beets.

Morgan Composting's siding will include a loading dock to load finished compost into boxcars for transport to their Marion Warehouse and packaging plants. Some of this compost will be back hauled to the thump for compost on the beet farmers fields.

This will not impact the sale of a portion of the sugar beet "waste" to sugar beet pellet manufacturing companies who are already under contract with Michigan Sugar.

An added benfit of this agreement will be additional use for the purchased beet hoppers for a longer portion of the year.

Interesting reading
Some of this is rooted in fact. I don't know about now, but Michigan Sugar used to give away compost material from their plants because they couldn't actually sell it due to laws on what qualified as compost. Per my source, who worked for Michigan Sugar, the stuff would do wonders for growing your yard. Remember even in the best years sugar beets are only about 17% sugar.

There is an update on the Avoca Biodisel plant.

Final Appoval has been given to build this plant, and the plant general contractor has been selected.

The DTE /GLOR applications for grant money to rebuild the Brown City to Avoca portion of the line have also been approved. The plant construction is estimated to take two years, with the plant going into operation in July 2026. The DTE Greenwood Energy Center expansion is also expected to enter service at approximately the same time.

The contract for gravel from Big Cut Gravel for State of Michigan projects has been renewed for another year. Cars are expected to follow the same routing as previous years, M&BC to LSRC, to GLOR to destination site. Currently three locations on the GLOR are expected to recieve cars for the State of Michigan projects this construction season. One is Cadillac, the second is in Grand Rapids (Hughart Yard) and the third is Verplank in Grand Haven.

Construction on the Buckey Yard Rebuild is progressing.

The reconstruction of the line between Coldwater and Sturgis is also beginning. Insprections have determined that the line is structurally ok as excepted track, but will require tie replacement at 50% of existing ties to be able to be upgraded to Class 1. No washouts of the line were detected. The roadbed is in need of some minor repairs. Work on the tie replacement project will commence upon completion of the Buckeye Yard project.

GLOR will be looking at an opening in late 2024 or early 2025 for this reconnected line. Upon completion of the connection rebuild, the White Pigeon Subdivison will be folder into the INER Division and removed from the Lake Michigan Subdivision. GLOR has obtained 20 acres west of Coldwater for the purpose of build a small interchange yard. This will be utilized by the GLOR's trains to exchange cars destined for points west and east on the INER subdivision.

The Great Lakes and Ohio River Railroad has some important news to announce. They have greatly expanded their leasing business, with the purchase of the locomotive leasing fleets of a pair of leasing companies.

GLOR has purchased Independent Locomotive Service (ILSX) effective May 1st, 2024. ILSX will remain an independent branch of the GLOR Family of companies at this time. In addition, GLOR has purchased the locomotive assetts of Western Rails Inc (WRIX), effective May 15th, 2024.

All locomotives and locations acquired in the purchase will remain in service at this time an will operate as subsidiary companies to GLOR's Parent Company. The purchase does not include the operational rights for the Minnesota Northern Railroad or the St. Croix Valley Railroad which are partially owned by Independent Locomotive Service. All ILSX units operating on the MNN and SCVR will remain on the railroad at this time. These will be considered leased to MNN and SCVR by ILSX and will remain under control of ILSX. GLOR, through the ownership Independent will now have a partial ownership stake in the MNN and SCRV , but as per the purchase agreement will not have any operational control as the MNNand SCVR will remain an independent carriers.

An updated locomotive roster will be supplied shortly.

In other news, operations of the GLOR remain steady across the board.

The TAWRE Facility is exapnding again. The original plans called for the plant to be able to bring in 7 unit trains of trash per week. Current operations are still less than the original plans called for by a significant amount. It is expected that the startup for additional unit trains will begin in mid-June. This will also require an increase in the number of cars of treatment chemicals inbound and the amount of outbound scrap heading out from the facility.

There has been an update on the Michigan Biodiesel Plant in Avoca. The purchase has been secured for the land for the project and DTE has confirmed their committment to the project and is in the planning stages for construction of the additional unit at the Greenwood Energy Center.

Delta, Ohio is also seeing continued increases in service. The Delta Car Shops have acquired several contracts with additional leasing companies for repair of equipment. In addition, the car shops have been tasked with building an additional set of 50 boxcars for service under the GLOX leasing service. These general use boxcars will be added to the dwindling supply of boxcars across the country, and will be 86' cars.

The rebuild of the Coldwater-Sturgis section is progressing. Ties have been secured and will begin getting replaced in June. It is anticipated that the Sturgis-Coldwater section will be opened in December, with the interchange yard between the INER and White Pigeon Subdivisions being completed early in 2025.

TAWRE Train Update:

Instead of 1 new unit train per week being picked up, TAWRE is now picking up two additional trains each week of trash. The first train will arrive on the GLOR on Tuesday morning from CN in Durand and will be Toronto trash. The new second train, which will arrive via NS in Toledo will be New York City trash and should arrive on the GLOR on Thursday evenings.

The anticipated operations of the line from Cadillac to Thompsonville will be

Monday Local CT - Cadillac to Thompsonville and Unit Trash Train Inbound
Tuesday - Outbound Unit Trash Train and Inbound Unit Trash
Wednesday - Local CT and Oubound Unit Trash
Thursday - Inbound Unit Trash
Friday - Inbound Unit Trash , Outbound Unit Trash, and Local CT
Saturday - Outbound Unit Trash

In addition, TAWRE, which had been using a leased unit from GMTX to switch the facility, has contracted to have GLOR handle all in plant switching operations. The exact unit has not been determined, but the GLOR has prefered keeping the GP30's and GP35's on the north end of the railroad.

The current facility includes 4 yard staging tracks for handling the inbound / outbound traffic as well as plant tracks to the chemical unloading tracks, the plastic recycling loading tracks, the metal recycling loading tracks and the trash unloading loop.

The new switching operations, which will take effect on July 1st, will be handled by crew TAWR. This crew will be based in Thompsonville and will operate as needed unloading the trash trains, and switching the cars delivered by the CT local.

It is estimated that the TAWRE plant will now be receiving approximately 30 cars of chemicals per week and will be shipping approximately 30 cars of recycled plastic and 15 cars of recycled metal per week.

Other news on this Cadillac to Thompsonville line includes the Yuma Sand plant shipping approximately 45 cars per week, and the second sand plant , Mesick Sand, is producing about 15 cars per week.

The CT local is operating 3 days per week, and is averaging about 45 cars per trip out of Cadillac. The company is still looking to further expand its presence in northernwestern Michigan, and several additional customers may possibly begin or return to using rail in the future.

After several years of discussions, GLOR will be running unit trains of corn from Central Michigan and the thumb area to Albion for The Anderson's Ethanol Plant in Michigan starting in the fall of 2024. Trucks have been able to bring the quantity of corn needed at the plant into Albion previously, but issues with trucking, and the single railroad routing that the GLOR has to Albion now allows the traffic to be operated as a single unit train. Trains will operate as 64 car units between points north and Albion.

Routing for these trains will be via Durand and the Ann Arbor connector onto NS tracks. There has been some push to reinstall the line from Owosso to Lansing, however at this time, there are not enough customers to justify this reinstallation, so the traffic will go the "long way."

The only difficult portion of this trip with be operating around connector in Ann Arbor. The crews will operate the train south to Ferry Yard in Ann Arbor, where the crews will run around the train to head west on the Amtrak line.

This operation will also include some sad news for railfans. The yard office building in Ferry Yard will be removed and the passing siding in Ferry Yard will be extended. Currently the passing siding extends from just north of Hill St to just south of the yard office, a distance of approximately 2600 feet. The siding will be expanded to just south of E. Madison St, and will be a distance of 4800 feet, a distance long enough to easily accomodate the running around of a 64 car unit grain hopper train. The trains are being limited to 64 cars due to the length of the siding in around Ferry Yard and the available space for the cars in Albion.

In addition, in Albion, the GLOR will be adding their yard tracks off the Amtrak mainline from approximately 25 1/2 mile Rd east to the plant, providing the railroad with a second access point to the plant off the Amtrak Mainline. The property has been secured for this project, and the project is expected to commence in the Fall of 2024. The current plan is for GLOR to add 3 tracks. This will allow the unit grain trains to be brought in and stored near the ethanol plant, as well as allowing for use by the locals serving Albion as needed. This will also allow the DDG traffic within the property to remain virtually untouched.

Successful completion of this project may result in other changes to the train operations around Albion, with it being possible that a local may be run from the property in Albion.

In addition, it is possible that Albion may get additional unit grain trains from the west side of the state, which would take the GLOR's lines from west Michigan to Kalamazoo to head east to Albion. There are currently no agreements in place for this operation, but it is being discussed as a possability, depending on how other operations work out.

The work around Ferry Yard will be resulting on a complete closure of the tracks E. Madison St to the north end of Ferry Yard for a few weeks in July. This will allow crews to relocate the existing main and accomadate the addition of the passing siding to Madison St. The GLOR has arranged for temporary trackage rights over CN from Durand through Pontaic and Detroit to Flat Rock. At Flat Rock the trains will resume operations on GLOR's trackage rights line to Diann before resuming to Toledo. It is estimate the project will take 3 weeks to complete.

The opening on Michigan Central Station in Detroit has also intensified discussions about the possability of a return of a long lost train on the Amtrak Line. Amtrak and MDOT officials are in discussions about adding a commuter train running from Jackson to Detroit over the line. This train would operate to Michigan Central Station from the historic Jackson Amtrak Station and include stops in Grass Lake, Chelsea, Dexter, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Dearborn. The proposed plan calls for new stations to be added in Grass Lake, Chelsea, Dexter, and Ypsilanti. The Ypsilanti location would be adjacent to the campus of EMU. The current plan is for a single train each direction to run daily.

In other passenger related news, the WALLY line is again in the news. Officials in Ann Arbor are pushing for the GLOR and MDOT to reach an agreement for passenger rail use of the GLOR's line from Howell to Ann Arbor for passenger rail. GLOR is currently opposed to the plan as it does not appear to have the ridership GLOR feels would be required to justify the interference with freight operations on the line.

One other passenger operation is in more serious talks though. The long pushed Ann Arbor to Traverse City and Petoksey operation is again in the news, this time with some support of the GLOR. The GLOR is willing to support a single pair of trains operating over the line from Ann Arbor to Traverse City and Petoskey under limited conditions. The plan GLOR is willing to support involves a single train per week, Northbound running on Friday, leaving at 8 am from Ann Arbor's Amtrak Station, with the Southbound leaving in the early afternoon from Walton Jct. The current plan calls for the train to operate NB to Walton Jct and be split into a TC component and a Petoskey Component, which each would be operated to their final destination. The trains from each location would then leave their origin city late morning on Sunday, combining at Walton Jct for the return trip. Daily service, which is requested by several communities on the line is simply not something GLOR is willing to undertake at this time.

Things are still moving along on the GLOR. Service in Michigan has been robust, with all lines contributing to the sustained service expected of customers.

Things are going well with the interchange partners on the GLOR.

Due to a new customer on the MMGN, the car storage traffic sent to the MMGN is down. The GLOR is transporting rail construction materials regularly for the project of rebuilding a section of track to serve the new customer. The loss of the traffic from the MMGN has been offset because that traffic moved to the A&MI, which had lost a customer a few months back. GLOR is working with the A&MI on a short distance shuttle of soybeans to the Ithaca ZFS plant.

Interchange with the CP&P and ICN remains steady. CP&P is operating 3 days per week, which dictates that local CP runs a minimum of 3 days per week, but often this train is running a full 5 day week due to customers in TC, East Jordan and Elmira needing service. One of the customers that train CP has been servicing is East Jordan Iron Works. After several years of discussions, EJIW has finally decided to begin running finished products from their foundary in Elmira, to their distribution center on CSX in Sunfield. Routing for this traffic will be via the Clare-Bladwin connection to CSX in Grand Rapids. EJIW was slow to begin rail service, however service has remained steady in recent months. EJIW's inbound traffic has dropped off from roughly 30 cars per week when they started getting rail service, to approximately 20 carloads per week now. Most of this is inbound scrap metal, although they do get occassional loads of inbound coatings (tank cars), and inbound pipes (gondolas or flat cars) for transload to their East Jordan Facility. Outbound traffic has picked up to approximately 20 cars per week. This is product combined from both their foundary and the East Jordan water products facility. Other customers on the line north of Cadillac have remained steady. Several new customers are looking at rail service on the north end, but have not begun service yet.

Elsewhere on the railroad, the line from Coldwater to Sturgis is progressing, and should be opening at some point in the fall. This will connect the White Pigeon and INER subdivisions.

The Clare-Baldwin rebuilt line has still not begun to pay for iteself as the Potash facility is being delayed in its construction. The line was rebuilt with the condition this facility would be built, and the GLOR's legal team is following the situation closely to determine if any legal action may be required.

In locomotive news, the rebuild program resulted in the outshopping of GP40's has continued. #402, #403, #408 and #409 were all released in May as GP40M-3's. Due to contract for for a couple leasing companies, including LTEX, no units went in for rebuild from the GLOR/GLOX roster until early June. The current units in Lima being upgraded at GP38-2's #2008, #2009, #2019, #2036. Two of these units, #2008 and #2019, had been sideline for mechanical issues and were not scheduled to be shopped, but needed other mechanical work.

Not everything has gone well for the GLOR. On Friday evening, June 21st, GLOR had an incident at a grade crossing which resulted in a significant derailment. GLOR was running a unit trash train southbound near Ithaca when a truck carrying construction equipment began stuck on the crossing at Pierce Rd. The train, traveling at 27 mph hit the flatbed and construction equipment, before derailing 6 locomotives and 17 container cars. The locomotives involved all left the rails, but thankfully the damage does not appear to be so severe that it will require the units be scrapped. The units involved were SD70's #7003 and NYSW heritage unit #7012, which were powering the train. Also derailed while being trasnported were GP35M-3's # 392 (Wabash heritage scheme), and #394 (TSBY Heritage scheme) as well as SD40-2 #4004 and SD40T-2 #4017. The worst damge happened to lead locomotive #7003, which suffered significant damage to the front end. Thankfuly the containers were empty and there was no fuel leak from the train's locomotives. Unfortauntely, the train was acting as a power swap move with power for the Cadillac based trains, as well as the Clare local. The railroad expects full service restoration along the line by June 26th. Unfortantely as a result of the derailment, one container became dislodged and came to rest alongside the house near crossing. Fortunately no crew members were injured and the driver of the truck had exited the vehicle upon hearing the trains horn and was not injured. This incident is resulting in the rerouting of some traffic. Carload traffic is being rerouted west from Owosso to Grand Rapids then north of Bladwin and back east to Clare. Unit trash train traffic is being rerouted via the Michigan line at Ann Arbor, to Kalamazoo and then north to Bladwin to Clare. These reroutes will cause some trains to operate across tracks not used to seeing the size of trains they will be hosting. This incident will also cause some delays on the railroad that could ripple to other railroads. NS, CSX and CN all had unit grain trains destined in or north of Ithaca. These unit trains will be held on the GLOR south of Owosso. In addition, a unit trash train is also due inbound from NS in Toledo.

Further updates on the status of the GLOR will be made available over the next couple weeks.
