December 1st, 2022 Update:

The Diann connector is operational, ending the long backup movements for trains ARTBU, ARTBB, ARBTB and ARTBU (Auto Racks Toledo - Blue Island UP or BNSF) at Diann. Trains will now simply take the connector track and continue on their merry little way.

There is news out of Springfield, Oh as well. NS and GLOR have reached an agreement in which the GLOR will now provide service to Tri State Forest Products.

Additionally, Heritage Cooperative 9040, a reengined S2 (former TT and B&O) is down for maintaince, so it is being shipped to the Lima Shops for repairs and GLOX GP9 #55 will be taking its place. If 9040 is not repairable, several entities have inquired with Heritage Cooperative about purchasing the locomotive, and Heritage has inquired about a long term lease or purchase of a switcher from the GLOX fleet, if the price is right. Heritage is concerned however as they have lost business in recent years to other elevators on CSX lines nearby.

The Urbana Subdivision may be getting an additional customer. Urbana Material, a sand and gravel producer is looking at possible rail service. Service to this location would be done on a newly constructed extension of the track which currently services Damewood Enterprises in Urbana.

One the DT&I Subdivision, Whirlpool is expanding their Ottawa, Oh production facility. GLOR's sales team is working to add them as a customer.
GLOR is also working to get more traffic out of the POET facility in Leipsic. Currently most of the traffic in the facility is handled by CSX and NS.

The contract switching operations in Delta are going well. With all of the customers needing switching in Delta and the surrounding area, including those formerly switched by NS, things are absolutely hopping for the Delta crews.

The Anderson's in Metamora has been a steady customer, shipping multiple unit grain trains the past year. Multiple Wheat and Corn trains went outbound as well as a single soybean train. The Anderson's GP18 has served the elevator well for years but is due for heavy maintainance. The unit will be shipped to Lima for GLOR locomotive shop crews to complete the work during the spring of 2023.

The Adrian Subdivision, including the Clinton Branch is holding steady. A substantial portion of the traffic from the Adrian Subdivision is interchanged to NS in Adrian, including traffic from the Clinton Branch. Some traffic is making its way to the Riga interchange for DFR and FRD to handle.

The interchange of traffic between the Northern Division and Southern Division at Diann is unsteady. Some months, the traffic is very heavy and uses both connecting tracks, while other times, the traffic is so only a few cars per week.

DFR and FDR are currently running on a M-F schedule between Delta and Flat Rock.

Finally, on the north end, grading of the Baldwin to Clare re-installation section is nearly complete. Crews will finish the final few miles of grading in the spring with the hopes of having the line open for service by the summer of 2023.

GLOR and tourist operations.

The GLOR is currenly hosting multiple different tourist programs and operations on their lines.

Steam Railroading Institute is the largest and most well known of these organizations. They run based out of Owosso using either leased diesel locomotives or a couple different steam locomotives, including the world famous Pere Marquette #1225, the Polar Express engine. They also partner regularly with the owners of NKP #765 and have that locomotive come to run on the GLOR's rails.

The Southern Michigan Railroad Society runs tourist operations on the GLOR's Clinton Branch between Clinton and Raisin Center.

Blissfield Dinner Train Services operates a dinner train between Blissfield and Adrian as well.

Ohio Rail Experience. The Ohio Rail Exeperience has operated trains over the GLOR's tracks in previous years, however they have announced they will not be running in 2023 in an effort to focus on other restoration efforts.

Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad. LMM Operates of trackage of the GLOR. LMM is also the ticketing agent for the Ohio Rail Experience as well.

January 2023 Update:

GLOR's Muskegon to Hamilton line will be getting a pair of "new" customers in 2023. The first, Johnston Boiler has previously be a customer of the predecessor railroads, but quit service following poor service and damage to their products. Sadly fo railfans, the service will not occur from their facility in Ferrysburg, but instead will be a transload to railcars from the property of the other new customer, Verplank Dock Company. The current plan is for Johnston to ship outboard boilers and receive metal plating for production. It is estimated that the outbound service will be 2-3 carloads per month, while inbound carloads may be slightly more than this number.

Verplank will be operating an aggregate transload from rail to barge for some Corp of Engineers Projects occurring in Lake Michigan in the coming years. After searching for locations to get materials from for these projects and the location of the projects, GLOR and Verplank's bid for service was deemed the best offer. The spur already exists to the Verplank facility, although it will need upgrades as it has been disused for several years.

In other news, DOW switching operations are up and running. As anticipated, GLOR is running 3 switching shifts at the plant, with traffic in and out still going by both the LSRC and GLOR. GLOR does handle the majority of this traffic as they have since the days of CSX due to CSX's interactions with DOW. LSRC is trying to make gains into the DOW traffic, but as of now there hasn't been a monumental shift in traffic volumes.

In Clare, a new transload is being built just west of town. This will service several different commodities and customers including bulk stone / aggregate, flour, sweeteners, as well as warehousing service for boxcar loads. This will be located west of town on the property, just west of Grant Ave. As part of this project, there is now a plan to run a connection from the being reinstalled Clare - Baldwin line up to the transload area and the north soouth ex-AA mainline. The transload area would also serve as the northern end of a Clare Yard which would be expended from 2 tracks to 4 tracks alongside Ann Arbor Trail. The additional track would allow easier interchange between cars from the Clare Baldwin line as well as between the north and southbound trains meeting in Clare. Additionally, the connection track would eliminate the need for the Northern Logistics transload facility to have a mainline running through it.

February 2023 Update:

No major items to report. The GLOX GP40's #405, 406 and 407 which were sent in for rebuilding in Lima should be out within the next month. They have been upgraded to -3 standards and will be designated as GP40M-3s upon their release. The railroad has not decided which units will be the next units to enter the shop yet from the current plan.

Another unit has been sent to the shop for rebuilding, GP7 #47, which is still active roster, but rarely sees service due to difficulties with the traction motors, will be rebuilt.

The sugar beet season was a success. Using the old SGVY hoppers leased from the ICN, the railroad moved 241 carloads of sugar beets, from loading sites in the thumb to the sugar plants in Bay City and Sebewaing. The majority of the loads went to the Bay City plant, as Sebewaing suffered a system failure which limited the ability to bring in beets by rail. Michigan Sugar was pleased with the service received and has committed to using rail for the sugar beet service again in the 2023 harvest season. A lease has again been signed for use of the ICN stone hoppers for the upcoming season. The railroad is hoping the service is trippled in 2023 to 750 carloads. The railroad is willing to dedicate a crew to just running the sugar beet trains, if Michigan Sugar agrees.

The Big Cut Gravel to west Michigan stone service has gone well. Big Cut Gravel, which had anticipated closing in 2022, will now remain open at least through the 2023 season. The routing for these cars is still south via the Lake State to the GLOR and across the state on train DM before delivery to the destination sites. The traffic to Cadillac, as was originally planned did not start in 2022, but instead will be running in 2023. There were issues with the construction sites that delayed the delivery. Since this is a series of government projects, it is unknown how long the service will last, but the projects will run at least through the 2023 construction season.

February 2023 Update #2:

The GLOR is expanding again. GLOR has reached an agreement in principal to purchase the Indiana Northeastern Railroad. Parts of this line, which were cast off from Conrail, Norfolk Southern and Penn Central, will be a wonderful addition to the GLOR's lineup of lines. Indiana Northeastern has a strong customer base that GLOR's staff will continue to work to grow.

The line between Sturgis and Coldwater was scheduled for abandonment in 2012, but a local businessman purchased the trackage which has been sitting in the weeds for over a decade. The businessman has recently passed away and his family only now became aware of this unique property he owned. The estate is looking at options to either lease of sell the line to the GLOR as a connection between the INER and the White Pigeon Branch. If the line is purchased / leased it will create a direct connection between the GLOR and the INER.

The purchase of the INER will include all assets of the railroad including he following locomotives:

1073 GP10 - out of service and being parted out.
1601 GP7
1602 GP9
2185 GP30
2216 GP7u
2230 GP30
3084 SD40-2
3125 SD40-2
4379 SD70M - currently enroute to the INER. Still in UP Paint
4670 SD70M- currently enroute to the INER. Still in UP Paint
5903 GP9H

GLOR does plan to renumber the units into the GLOR's numbering scheme, however the units will remain in the Indiana Northeastern paint scheme until they point they are moved to the Lima shops for major work. Renumbering and repainting of the numbers will take place in the INER shops in Hudson, In.

The purchase does not include the Grain Elevator in South Milford Elevator, which previously had owned the railroad. The elevator will remain a customer of the railroad under the GLOR's ownership.

Additionally, the in place agreement for the INER to run Indiana Rail Experience trains, operated by the Fort Wayne Railroad and Historical Society 's NKP #765 will remain in place as the GLOR is generally friendly with tourist operations and historical societies.

GLOR is also working with the FWRHS to operate additional trips along other GLOR lines not previously used, including the Western Division from Fort Wayne to Lima.

The INER trackage will be operated as the INER division of the GLOR at this time. Upon completion of the rehabilitation of the line from Sturgis to Coldwater, it is expected that the INER Division will be expanded to include all lines from the connection in White Pigeon under the INER division banner. Due to other projects on the railroad, and the lack of urgency in updating the line, the reconstruction of the Sturgis to Coldwater segment of the line is not expected to occur until 2025 or 2026 at the earliest. GLOR is also working on an agreement for NS to provide haulage between Montpieler, Oh and Adrian or Milan. GLOR would prefer Milan as it would make interchanging cars between segments of the railroad easier, but currently NS train B67 only runs from Montpieler to Adrian.

March 1st, 2023 Update:

GLOR is expanding again. The GLOR will be purchasing the Camp Chase Railway in Columbus, Oh. The Camp Chase Railway is a 15 mile shortline running from Columbus to Lilly Chapel, Oh. This line will connect, via trackage rights to CSX and NS in Columbus, as well as with the GLOR's Midland Subdivision. The Camp Chase will be run as the Lilly Chapel Subdivision of the Southern Division.

The roster of the Camp Chase includes the following locomotives, all of which will be added to the GLOX roster and leased back to the GLOR until they are replaced on the line by newer power.

ICBX 4618 (ex-GTW 4618) - GP9R
ICBX 7042 (ex-CN 7042) - GP9RM
ICBX 7076 (ex- CN 7076) - GP9RM

These units, for the time being will be providing power for the line, although they may be replaced at some point when the need arises.

The units will however be shipped to Lima's paint shop where they will be renumbered. ICBX 4618 will become GLOX #61, ICBX 7042 will become GLOX #62 and ICBX 7076 will become GLOX #63.

There has been an interesting project going on along the GLOR's Alma Branch starting in late 2022 that is expected to continue through at least mid-2023.

St. Louis, Michigan, known for being the Middle of the Mitten is also known for something much less friendly. Velsicol, a chemical manufacturing company operated along the banks of the Pine River from 1936 until 1978. Among the chemicals produced at the site were DDT and PBB. These chemicals both have massively bad histories with the environment and the citizens of the State of Michigan. In 1982 a consent agreement to wall and cap the site was agreed to in response to detection of massive amounts of contaminants at the site and in the adjacent river. Over $100 million was spent to clean up the site from 1998 to 2006 and DDT levels in the river's fish were reduced 98%. Even with the clean up, the site is severely contaminated and a new plan was developed to clean up the entire site. This was in part due to studies showing the cap and wall was not keeping contaiminants from the river and groundwater in the area.

In 2022, the EPA and EGLE, began a new phase of work to clean up the site. 100,000 tons of contaminated soil will be removed from the southern portion of the plant site and metal sheet pilings will be put in place to prevent collapse of the excavated area.

How does the GLOR fit into this. Rail service to the plant site has long be removed, but the dirty dirt from the site needs to be transported to the approved landfill sites. GLOR and EGLE have agreed to set up a transload site alongside the Alma Branch at the site of the former Alma refinery. Dirt will be trucked from the landfill site to a specially designed temporary transload site, which will be used to the transload the dirt into gondolas which will have a secure cover attached after loading. In addition, the transload site will be used to bring in the metal to be used in securing the site. The estimated 100,000 tons of dirt to be removed should equal approximately 900 carloads to be carried outbound. The dirt will be handled in 6 car dirty dirt blocks. The loading site will only have room to lad 2 cars at a time, so GLOR will be providing switching services to move cars within the loading site. Additional blocks or cars awaiting loading will be stored in the Alma "Yard" next to the former refinery site.

In addition to this service, two additional customers in Alma are considering resuming rail service. Alma Products and Padnos - Alma are both considering resumption or rail service. Time will tell if either resumes service or if this is just being done to keep the competition (trucks) honest.

March 2023 Update #2. As mentioned above, GLOR has purchased the INER. The decision has been made that at this time, all locomotives on the roster will retain their INER reporting marks and paint scheme. The incoming units, two SD70M's from Union Pacific will be sent to the shops in Hudson where they will be serviced and repainted into the GLOR scheme. These units will also not be renumbered into the GLOR/GLOX numbering scheme.

The only exception is GP10 #1073 which will be used as a part source and will be scrapped. This unit may be moved to the Lima shops for parts removal, or it may stay in Hudson.

GLOR/GLOX management is looking at possibly disposing of several units from the roster later in 2023. Several units are still operable but have been sitting unused either in Lima or Owosso for several months or longer. GLOR is looking at possibly bringing in some revenue for these units since they have not been leased / used in a significant period of time.

The Lima Shops have finished work on GLOX units #405, #406 and #407. These units have been rewired and redisignated at GP40M-3s. They are being sent north to the Northern Division and will be replacing GP35's 390, 391, and 392 which have been running around on the northern reaches of the railroad, out of Cadillac for several years. These units will be rewired and upgraded to -3 standards and will be designated at GP35M-3's upon their completion.

In April 2022, a grade crossing incident happened outside Jackson, Mi when a steel hauling rig stalled on the crossing and was hit by train JAL. The incident resulted in severe damage to locomotive #410, the lone GP40-2LW on the roster, as well as damage to GP50 #500. After nearly a year in the shop, #500 has been returned to service on the railroad. #410 was stripped of parts, many of which were used in the rebuild of the other GP40's on the roster and has since been sold to Beacon in Traverse City, who will scrap the locomotive. Among the parts saved off #410 was the fuel tank. It was determined that #405 actually had a rupture on the top portion of the fuel tank. This was not noticed on pevious inspections, but needed to be replaced.

In Delta, Oh, the railcar repair facility is takng shape. The main shop building, plus two of the supply and storage facilities on the property are ready for track work to begin. Track work outside the buildings will be completed after the second main repair / welding building is complete , Once the facility is complete, the location will have room for 10 cars inside the facility, as well as 15 cars of space for RIP work. The final building to be completed will the the 2 track cleain buildings and the chemical residue storage tanks.

April 1st, 2023 Update: Michigan Seemless Tube in South Lyon has apparently realized, some 40 years from when they stopped rail service that maybe it wasn't the best idea. They approached CSX about possibly reinstalling a branch from the CSX main in South Lyon back to the plant. The City of South Lyon opposes this reinstallation idea as well. That has gone nowhere. GLOR was then approached about reinstalling the from the end of their MAL Branch to South Lyon. GLOR has indicated that would be impossible, however GLOR is willing to set up a transload location at the end of the line north of Whitmore Lake, or at the former Hoover plant site in Whitmore Lake. MST is looking at their options to determine what their best option might be. The prefered site would be the location of the former Hoover plant, as this would be off the mainline, not a branch line. In addition this location has more space available than the MAL Branch site would have.

The last coal train to the Karn Power plant complex in Exxesville is scheduled for May 2023. The plant will be closing down power production later this year. This will be a blow to the railroad, but is something the GLOR has been preparing for as the plants closure was announced a while ago.

The Lima Locomotive facility is doing a substantial amount of rebuild and repair work at this time. The Heritage unit is getting its finishing touches done. The reapir work was able to be completed and this unit should be transfered back to the customer in April. Several other industrial units, mainly at grain elevators, have been shipped in for reapir work, and are being worked on. In addition, the rebuilding of the GLOR's 3 units is progressing in the shops, with the hope these units will be ready to ship back out in May or June.

On the Blue Ash Sub, two customers will be going in jointly on a new siding. Allegerion Steelcradt and Eastern Sheet Metal will be jointly paying for a new siding off the Blue Ash. In Addition, the Distribution Center II, which houses Daltile Stone and Slab, will be getting carloads for the first time in several years.

The Peavine Subdivision has been active over the past year. New customers in 2022 included Jack McCoy Lumber in Peebles and Ohio Mulch in Milford, Oh, next to the transload for Hanson's stone. Additionally, the railroad has purchased several locomotives from Homestead Rail Group in early 2023. These units are:

B23-7 #1011
GP15-1 # 1657
GP15-1 #1686
MP15AC #2414
SD40-2 #4512
B36-7 #5857
B36-7 #5895

The GE units will be shipped to Lima for overhaul work and will be added to the GLOX lease fleet after painting and renumbering.
#1011 will become GLOX #8900
#5857 will become GLOX #9300
#5895 will become GLOX #9301

The EMD Units will be added to the GLOR roster with the following renumbering.
#1657 will become GLOR #65
#1686 will become GLOR #66
#2414 will become GLOR #7
#4512 will become GLOR #4026

In addition, due to space constraints on the Peavine Subdivision, which are expected to worsen with the impening opening of the Purina plant in Batavia, GLOR is purchasing property in Anderston Township (outside Newtown), to create a small yard. The yard is expected to have 5 tracks and be located south of Broadwell Rd.

The line to Traverse City has seen an uptick in traffic over the winter. Grawn Propane ended up getting 65 carloads of propane, while Williamsburg propane ended up with 83 carloads. The team track in Traverse City has witnessed 4 carloads. There is still no word on the road salt distribution center proposed for the region. Sara Lee has been getting 3-5 carloads of flour per week. 1-2 carloads are coming from King Milling in Lowell while the remainder are coming from out of state. Additionally, Sare Lee gets 5-10 carloads of frozen fruit and 3-5 carloads of sugar per week and 2-3 carloads of corn syrup. Go Go Squeeze has been shipping out 2-3 carloads per week of finished product and has gotten 3-5 carloads per week of fruit. Beacon has been up and down, but averages 3-5 carloads per week out of their recycling center. Train TC-1 has been running almost daily over the line recently, even with the small trains they are running. TC-1 is normally bringing 8-10 cars per day to Walton Jct and picks up almost the same number to bring NB.

The TAWRE facility continues to get a single unit train of trash inbound per week, plus 5-10 carloads of chemicals inbound per week. Outbound they are shipping roughly 3 carloads of scrap metal and 4-7 carloads of plastic scrap per week. This may be changing as TAWRE may be expanding its inbound trash capacity in the next few months to take an additional 65 car unit train. This expansion is awaiting governmental approval since the trash is brought in across state lines.

Yuma Sand will resume operations this spring and is anticipating 20-30 carloads of sand outbound per week. When Yuma is operational, CT, the Cadillac - Thompsonville local will be running 3 days per week and will be averaging 13 cars daily over the line, excluding the trash unit trains. The same crew that runs the trash train will operate the CT local, so you will not see a CT and a trash unit train run the same day. The normal operations from Cadillac to Thompsonville will be trash train NB Monday, CT local Tuesday, Trash unit Wednesday, CT local Thursday and CT local Friday.

Cadillac to Petoskey is seeing substantial traffic volumes, with EJIW continuing to get roughly 20 inbound cars materials weekly and shipping 20-25 carloads outbound weekly. Amerigas in Petoskey got 63 loads between October and the end of March, the Elmira Cement terminal will begin getting cars again in April as the construction season ramps up. Lambda in Kalkaska and Magnum in Kalkaska have been running about 5 cars per week each. The biggest customer of the line has been the CP&P interchange at Foreman's. CP&P accounted for 2317 outbound cement loads, 1296 inbound flyash loads, and 113 inbound plastic pellet loads. Train CP, Cadillac to Petoskey has been averaging 25 cars for customers, plus the 9 carloads or so per day for TC-1.

North of Cadillac is generating roughly 200 cars per week. When the local Cadillac customers cars are included, it is not uncommon to see CSTN running with 55-60 cars southbound to Clare.

GLOR will be changing operations slightly this spring on the Northern Division north of Owosso.

The new lineup will be trains

OC - Owosso to Cadillac run through with pickups and set outs in Alma or Shepherd, and Clare enroute. (Typical Power is SD40-2's shared with CO)
CO - Cadillac to Owosso run through with pickups and set outs in Alma or Shepherd, and Clare enroute. (Typical Power is SD40-2's shared with OC)
ONTN - Owosso North turn - Works the Oakley Branch as well as northbound to Ithaca including interchange with the Middleton Branch in Ashley. (Will often run with SD40-2 or GP40-2s)
MDT-1 Middleton Branch Local - Works Middleton Branch as needed, including interchange with the MMGN. (Generally 2 GP30 or GP35's)
ITH-1 - Ithaca to Clare Local - Works all customers from Ithaca to Clare including the interchange with the A&MI in Wright Siding and ALM-1 on the Alma Branch. Will get cars from OC / CO in either Wright siding or Shephard. (Generally uses 2 GP30's or GP35's)
CSTN - Cadillac to Clare Local - Works customers between Cadillac and Clare. (Generally 2 GP30s, GP35's or GP40s)
CT - Cadillac to Thompsonville Local including Yuma Sand Pit. (Generally 2 GP30's, GP35's or GP40's, but may also use SD20's or SD9's)
CP - Cadillac to Petoskey Local - Works all customers between Cadillac and Petoskey including TC-1 Interchange and CP&P interchange. (Often will use SD40-2s)
OSTN - Transfer run between Durand Yard and San Yard in Owosso. Will also act as the Owosso Switcher, breaking down inbound trains to Owosso and build the outbound trains.

When the Bladwin - Clare section of the line reopens, expect the railroad to have a local based out of Clare as well as out of Baldwin to switch / transfer cars on the line.

Additionally, grain trains to facilities in Oakley, Middleton, Ithaca, Shephard and Rosebush may also run the line if not operated by the local and the trash train will still run weekly. NS Grain Trains will often run SD70's to Owosso and then lighter power for Middleton or Oakley trains. Mainline grain trains will run SD70's all the way. Trash train often runs with the SD35s or SD40-2s. Will sometimes run NS runthrough power of SD70's depending on power availability.

2022 was a decent year for interchange traffic from the Alma and Mid Michigan as well. Cargill shipped out 1743 cars mixed between units trains to all three Class 1 connections (CN, NS, and CSX) and carload traffic. The other customers on the line produced 397 carloads worth of traffic. All of this traffic is interchanged at Wright Siding. Normally when a grain train is destined for Cargill in Edmore, the GLOR units will run the train to the interchange in Alma. The GLOR will cut off the train and pull north of the interchange, while the A&MI units will come from their line, hook onto the train, and pull the back onto their rails. The GLOR units will then proceed back south of head north, depending on the needs of the day. When GLOR power is needed for the train, they will simply stop in Wright siding and the A&MI crews will take the train from Wright siding with the power still attached.

Traffic from the MMGN remained steady, but the major customer on the line remains car storage. GLOR was delivering 1 train per week of cars to the MMGN in Middleton. Generally the GLOR will operate to Middleton, run around the train and push the cars west of Rich Rd. MMGN's power will then pull the train from the west end back onto their rails or distribution to their customers. The typical train is normally 10 cars or less unless storage cars need to be moved. GLOR has sent cuts over 100 cars to the MMGN for storage in the past (normally empty coal hoppers). When short term storage cars are delivered (either for GLOR or LSRC), the cars are normally kept retrievable by the MMGN within 24 hours. GLOR keeps a pair of locomotives in Middleton to facilitate quick movement of traffic off the MMGN. Additionally, the GLOR doesn't run 6 axel power on the Middleton Branch, so grain trains on the line will be picked up from the mainline in Ashley and pulled using the ligher power. Due to track conditions, GLOR does limit the size of loaded trains on the GLOR's Middleton Branch to 30 cars, meaning outbound trains of grain often required multiple trips from Middleton to Ashley.

There is also a slight change to operations on the Hamilton Industrial Branch as of 1-1-2023. All customers on the branch will now be serviced by GLOR train MSK-2. GLOR has leased the tracks from I-196 in Holland to Waverly Yard, in addition to the tracks from I-196 to Hamilton which they purchased previously. It is anticipated that all traffic on the line will be running from Waveryl Yard, and as such, GLOR will be running this branch from Hamilton now instead of from Muskegon. The train's official route will be Hamilton to Muskegon and return, but the train will only run north of Holland in the event Verplank or Johnston Boiler requires service.

Traffic volumes on the Lake Michigan Division are such that there is slight changes to the trains running on the Lake Michigan Division as well.
GLOR will be reinstating a pair of run through trains between Grand Rapids and Elkhart, GREK, and EKGR effecting April 1st, 2023. Previously Grand Rapids traffic had been running SB on the local from GR to K'zoo before being added to the KZEK trains, with NB traffic running the opposite routing. While traffic volumes south of GR are not significantly higher, the additional traffic running from K'zoo to Elkhart is making operations of this run through train more difficult. GLOR is trying to avoid running excessively long trains, over 100 cars when possible, so the best alternative is to add this new train.

May 1st, 2023 Update:

No major changes on the GLOR in April 2023. The biggest updates involve the lines around Whitmore Lake.

GLOR and Michigan Seemless Tube, located in South Lyon, have agreed to the location and funding for a transload facility at the former site of the Hoover plant in Whitmore Lake. This facility will consist of a warehouse with 2 interior loading tracks approximately 400 feet in length, as well as 2 exterior tracks also approximately 400 feet in length. These 4 tracks will all be accessed from a lead track located near the bridge over US-23. There will be additional space on the property for an expandable tranload to be located on the property. It is expected that MST will, upon complettion of the project bring in approximately 100 carloads of inbound product, acid and steel, and ship approximately 300 carloads of outbound steel tubes. This facility, upon its completion, will be served by train AA-1.

On the MAL branch, the customers on the line, Fyke Sand and Gravel, and Michigan Metal Waste, are consistently shipping 10-15 cars per week. A third potential customer is looking at building a facility on the line, next to the Woodland Correctional Facility. This facility is would be an extension of the Environmental Wood Solutions, landscape supply company located on Whitmore Lake Rd. The primary commodity would be inbound wood ships during the spring / summer and inbound rock salt during the fall and winter months.

Work is slowly progressing on several other projects. Grading is nearly complete on the Baldwin - Clare section of the railroad. New ties are being secured from Stella-Jones in Wisconsin. Tie and then rail installation will begin this summer on the line with the anticipated opening of the line still scheduled for 2024.

Another major acquisition is in the works for the GLOR, however it is too soon to tell if this will take place or not. We should know by the the end of May if a possible acquisition / merger will be taking place.

June 1st, 2023 Update:

The GLOR has run their last coal train to Exxesville. The coal plant is being powered down this month. The last shipment of coal was sent in and the GLOR pulled the final cut of coal cars from the plant on May 28th and sent those cars to the MMGN for storage west of Carson City.

The bigger news, announced on Tuesday May 31st is the impending merger between the GLOR and the WATCO ownder Kanawha River Railroad. Under the terms of the merger agreement, Watco will gain a 25% holding of the GLOR and GLOX system, while the GLOR will gain control of the Kanawha River Railroad running from Refugee, Oh to Alloy. WV and from Maben WV, through Alloy to Cornilia, WV. The line will use trackage rights from Refugee, OH into Columbus where it will interchange with NS and will use trackage rights over CSX from Hobson, Oh to Point Pleasant, WV. Interchanges will be with NS only, except for prior customers who have contractual agreement from pre-2016 who may interchange with CSX in Point Pleasant, WV.

The merger agreement will add 371.4 miles of trackage to the system operated by the GLOR, as well as adding the following locomotives to the GLOR's roster. These units will be moved to Lima's paint shop over time and be cycled in for renumbering and repainting into the GLOR's traditional paint scheme.

WAMX 3901 (GP39V) to GLOR 200
WAMX 3902 (GP39V) to GLOR 201
WAMX 3921 (GP39V) to GLOR 202
WAMX 4211 (SD40M-2) to GLOR 4027
WAMX 4213 (SD40M-2) to GLOR 4028
WAMX 4221 (SD40M-2) to GLOR 4029
WAMX 6000 (SD60) to GLOR 6007
WAMX 6001 (SD60) to GLOR 6001
WAMX 6002 (SD60) to GLOR 6002
WAMX 6003 (SD60) to GLOR 6003
WAMX 6004 (SD60) to GLOR 6004
WAMX 6005 (SD60) to GLOR 6005
WAMX 6006 (SD60) to GLOR 6006
WAMX 6008 (SD60) to GLOR 6008
WAMX 6009 (SD60) to GLOR 6009
WAMX 6010 (SD60) to GLOR 6010
WAMX 6011 (SD60) to GLOR 6011
WAMX 6012 (SD60) to GLOR 6012

The SD60's will retain their current number, except for WAMX 6000 which will be renumbered to 6007 due to the GLOR already rostering a sister ex-NS SD60 as GLOR #6000.

In addition to this, the biggest news, the GLOR has purchased property in Columbus to build a yard of their own after operating out of CSX and NS yards. A portion of the former Buckeye Yard property in Columbus has been secured and will see the GLOR build a yard on the property. Trackage rights from the yard to the CSX (Parsons) and NS (Watkins) Yards has been secured. Trains currently originating from Parsons and Watkins Yards will relocate to Buckeye Yard upon its completion. All required interchange agreements will remain in place and GLOR will operate a transfer train to connecting railroads from Buckeye Yard.

In other news, the locotmotives in the Lima Shop for rebuild, GP35M-3's, 390, and 392 have been released from the shops and will be sent back to the north end of the railroad, where they have spent the vast majority of their lives as former Ann Arbor Railroad locomotives. The units were also repainted during their stay, updating the heritage or special schemes they have worn since being added to the GLOR's roster. #390 wears Ann Arbor DT&I era orange, #391 is the GLOR's Operation Lifesaver locomotive and #392 wears a Wabash inspired paintscheme. In addition, #47 has been released from the shop and will be heading to Owosso where it will serve as additional power on the northern ended of the railroad as needed.

The next units headed for the shop for rebuild will be #393, 394, 395, and 396. These GP35s and GP35M's will be released upon completion as GP35M-3's.

Work at the car shops is still progressing. The car shop buildings are constructed and now internal work on the buildings is being completed. It is estimated that the remaining work will take approximately 4 months to complete and the opening of the car repair shops will hopefully be around October 1st.

On the Saginaw Bay Division, the movement of sugar beets by rail will happen again in 2023. After last years movement, Michigan Sugar was sufficiently impressed as to request similar options in 2023. The goal is to expand the shipment of sugar beets to 400 cars for this falls season.

June, 2023 Update #2:

The Clare to Baldwin section of the railroad is progressing slower than expected. The availability of railroad ties has become an issue which is slowing down laying of rail along the line. The rail itself has also become a bit more difficult to acquire than had been expected. The railroad is using stick rail segments to rebuild the line. Approximately 54 miles of mainline track is being laid. This means acquiring approximately 172,800 ties (from Stella Jones), and 14,750 39 foot rail sections plus all the tie plates, spikes, rail anchors and extra materials required. Ballast for the line is being secured from several different locations, both on and off the GLOR. Wallace Stone in Pigeon is providing some of the ballast, however much of it will be coming in from connections on CSX and NS.

The fact this is a "new construction" rather than a rebuild also creates certain logistical difficulties in terms of moving the crossties and sticks of rail into place. Crews are working from both the Baldwin and Clare ends of the line to complete the project.

The rebuilding of the former Buckeye Yard location will not begin until the Baldwin-Clare line is done.

Additional trackwork on the line is also being undertaken to keep the majority of the line at or bring it up to 286,000 pound standards. Very few sections are currently not capable of handling 286,000 pound cars.

The railroad is still looking at what they want to do with the Brookville Subdivisons western end. A recent inspection of the line has found additional sections are washed out and multiple bridges have structural concerns.

The GLOR is also looking at having to replace one of their railroad bridges in northern Michigan. The bridge over the Manistee River is "passed its designed service time" and will need to be replaced. The railroad is working with the Michigan Department of Transportation, who actually owns this section of railroad track, on funding options for the replacement of the bridge. The railroad / state have applied for Federal Grant money to help with funding the project.

One additional project is also in the works, although it is unknown when it will be brought into service. Padnos in Howell has built a shredder on their property near the AnnPere diamond. They are now looking at building a connection to the GLOR in Howell. The location of the siding was staked out last year, but no work, as of yet has been completed on the project.

August 2023, Update: The GLOR has again leased the former GMO open hoppers from the ICN for sguar beet service this fall. These cars were originally purchased for the beet service but were transition to serve the quarry traffic when sugar beet traffic stopped in 2016. According to early reports, despite a less than ideal start to the year, the sugar beet crop could be well above average in 2023. The railroad is still looking at a minimum of 400 carloads this fall, which is still a small portion of the total beet volume processed.

Construction is still moving along slowly on the Baldwin-Clare segment. It looks as if the opening of the segment may be delayed due to supply chain issues.

After a summer lull, grain train traffic is going to be picking up again in the near future. GLOR has multiple grain facilities which they either service directly, or are service by interchange partners. The company feels they are in good shape to handled the traffic volume on the north end, but will be moving some additional power from the south end's extra power pool north to handle the grain trains. With the loss of the coal traffic, the power that would have been pulling those trains is freed up to work other trains.

As with many things requiring governmental approval, the application to receive additional trash at the TAWRE facility spent longer than anticipated before getting approval. Approval however was granted. As a result there is a slight operational change on the line. GLOR will now be getting unit trash trains for TAWRE on Monday and Thursday. Empties will head the opposite way the following day. It is estimated the the local traffic of chemicals, scrap plastic and scrap metal will roughly double in volume as well.

The Kanawah River Division is doing well. Coal traffic has been dropping, but the railroad is still running a decent volume of chemical traffic.

The car repair project is still on pace for their Ocotober 1st opening date.

There is one other update in for future years. Several businesses are banding together in northern Michigan to return a previously transported commodity to the rails (sort of). Tree Growers of Michigan, a group of Christmas Tree Producers in Michigan has worked out an agreement with GLOR to ship trees from Cadillac, Michigan to several locations across the country. These will not be shipped in traditional box cars as previous versions of tree shipping had used. GLOR has arranged with CSX to transport cuts of containers from Cadillac to North Baltimore, where the containers will be transfered to CSX trains bound for several locations across the country. These containers will be refridgerated containers designed to keep the cut trees at an optimal transport temprature. Transportation via container will benefit the end site retail seller as well as the tree producers.

GLOR has determined thier plan for the upcoming sugar beet season.

Michigan Sugar is looking at receiving rail shipments at all 4 locations this season. As a result GLOR will be stationing a locomotive at each facility to handle switching inbound cars. The exact locations are still TBD, but the units expected to be used are GLOX End Cab Switchers #1, #2, #3 and #4. The trains from the loading sites to the plants will all run with a distinctive symbol and dedicated power. Power for the sugar beet trains is expected to be GLOX #8903 and #8904.

In additional news, the railcar repair facility is nearing completion and is still expected to open by October 1st. The Baldwin-Clare line is slowly progressing. GLOR is still hoping the line will be available by the end of March 2024. Following the completion of this project the GLOR crews will begin working on the rebuilding of a portion of Buckeye Yard in Columbus, Oh.

The line between Stugis and Coldwater has officially be purchased, but is not a high priority rebuild, so it will be rebuilt upon completion of the Buckeye Yard project.

Expansion projects in Durand and Cadillac have now been completed. A new project is being completed at the north end of Cadillac's North Yard. This is a small container loading facility for use for loading the containers of Christmas Trees. It is unknown if any additional customers would use this terminal for loading containers to flat cars.

The Purina plant in Ohio is still under construction. Crews have yet to begin building the connection between the Peavine Subdivision and the in plant track network. Plans call for the plant to have roughly 10,000 feet of trackage inside the property, so rail service will be required, but when it will be connected is unknown.

Football Special Update :

GLOR will be operating 3 football special trains on November 25th, 2023 for the Michigan vs Ohio State football game.

FB-1 will operate from Lima, Oh to Ann Arbor. This train will leave at 4:00 pm on Friday evening, arriving approximately 9:00 pm in Ann Arbor. Passengers will be shuttled to the hotel. In the morning, a shuttle will take passengers from the hotel to Michigan Stadium at 10:30 am. Passengers will be picked up in Ferry Yard with the train leaving 90 minutes following the conclusion of the game. The return trip will operate as train FB-2.

FB-10 will operate from Kalamazoo, to Battle Creek, Albion, Jackson and finally Ann Arbor. It will leave Kalamazoo at 7:30 am and will arrive at Ferry Yard at 10:30 am (times are approximate as it will be working with Amtrak on the exact schedule). Train FB-11 will be the return trip, leaving Ferry Yard 60 minutes following the conclusion of the game.

FB-100 will operate from Traverse City, to Cadillac, Clare, Mt. Pleasant, Alma and Owosso on Friday evening. The train will stop in Durand for the night, with passengers shuttled to a local hotel for the evening. The train will leave Durand at 8:00 am, with stops in Howell, Hamburg and Whitmore Lake before arriving at Ferry Yard at 11:00 am. The return trip, FB-101 will leave 75 minutes following the conclusion of the game, running a single day trip back to TC with the same stops as SB.

Trains FB-1/ FB-2 will be comprensive packages, with game tickets, hotel stay and transportation to and from the game included in the package price.

Trains FB-10 / FB-11 will be a commuter only package providing service only to and from Ann Arbor for the game.

Trains FB-100 / FB-101 will be a mixed package. Passengers from the TC, Cadillac, Clare, Mt. Pleasant, and Owosso stops will be comprehensive packages only including tickets, hotel stay in Durand. A second, commuter option will be available for passengers from Durand, Howell, Hamburg and Whitmore Lake.

There have been reports leaked that one of the trains may be running with special power, but the current plan is all trains will be running with GLOR diesel power.

There is talk about possibly trying to run trains in the future in conjunction with the SRI using #1225 as power, but that is currently in the planning stages only.

September 1st, 2023 Update:

There has been a slight operational change to the GLOR's operations.

ADR-2, which had been running from Adrian to Diann is now changing their operations slightly. This train will now take the SW wye connector and run to Erie Yard rather than running to Diann.

This change has been made as a result of a slight change in Toledo.

Tol-3 is now the Erie Yard switcher exclusively.

Tol-2 is now the second shift Toledo switcher. This will service the local customers as well as handling all switching duties required in Ottawa Yard.

Tol-1 is now the first shift Toledo Switcher. It, like Tol-2 will service local customers and handle switching duties in Ottawa Yard. Tol-1 will also run to Erie and Temperance Yards as required with yard transfers.

Tol-4 is a new train based out of Erie Yard. This train will now handle all traffic from Toledo north to the Saline Branch, including all interchange traffic to the Southern Division at Diann Yard.

Train AA-2, which had been the Ann Arbor south local is now abolished as the work is handled from train Tol-4.

Also, there has been a train numbering change for the train on the Kanawah Division.

CHO - Columbus to Hobson Yard will take the place of train 380 from Columbus to Hobson.
HOB - Hobson Yard to Belle, WV will take the place of 380 from Hobson to Dickinson (Quincy, WV)
DHO - Belle, WV to Hobson Yard will take the place of 381 from Dickinson to Hobson.
HOC- Hobson Yard to Columbus will take the place of 381 from Hobson to Columbus.

NIT-1 Nitro, WV based local.
