Re: CN Train Location Updates: July 2022
SB Train 515 with 5323 running in reverse just passed MP 22.5 on the Holly.
I have noticed with the reworking of trains and symbols we only have 515 (both ways) and 251 running on the South Holly during the day now most days. Until the change there would usually be one or two, sometimes three SB trains sitting in Pontiac waiting for Amtrak 351 to depart and follow it down the Hill most days. Trains like 116, 250, 450, a 280 or two.
Now all the trains are in the early evening or night. And fewer since they combined 514 with the old 451 from Lang that used to go by in the early evening in the form of 507/508 (note, local train numbers). It is more like the Great Recession days of 2009 when the Holly was down to one freight train a day, a local out of Pontiac that did all the intermodal work too.

A492 east clear mp205 cam at 11:55. CN duo #3029 + #3838. Lot of stacks leading off before mixed freight, high majority being tanks.

Re: CN Train Location Updates: July 2022
CN went from having a bunch of trains running down the Holly all spring to less than ever. Today's EB A492 had 92 intermodal cars to set off in Flint for L508. That would have been a Q116 in 2021!Manistique wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 10:26 amSB Train 515 with 5323 running in reverse just passed MP 22.5 on the Holly.

Re: CN Train Location Updates: July 2022
I'm glad you guys are commenting on trains down the Holly Sub.
Until recently, a really good day on the Holly were 116, an extra intermodal either to or from Moterm (symbols like 189 for example), 251, 280, 450, 514 North, and 514 South. That's at least 5 trains per day for sure (116, 251, 450, 514N, and 514S), up to 7 trains per day if you add in a 280 and an extra intermodal, not to mention the 756 Sand Trains that used to run and a few other extra symbols that have ran such as 271, 296, 356, 401, 491, G807, G889, etc.
Now that 116 terminates in Battle Creek, with train 500 (or whatever symbol that may do it like 492 mentioned above) taking those cars to Flint, we have still 251, 450, 507, 508, and "maybe" a 280-type autorack train that doesn't run everyday, so what used to be 5 - 7 trains per day is now 4 - 5.
Someone correct me if any of this information is inaccurate but I think that is the current situation. Living 1/3 of a mile away in Linden and able to see trains from my upstairs window, the train count is down for sure. From a railfan perspective its a bummer, but from a business perspective with todays crew shortages, PTC, longer trains, cost cutting measures in a slowing economic climate, I get it.
The reality of CN in Michigan is the Mt. Clemens Sub and Holly Sub are both way under utilized. While I am certainly NOT advocating this, you "could" take the trains off the Mt. Clemens Sub (minus the local) and run them up and down the Flint and Holly Subs and the Holly sub would still be under utilized with plenty of capacity. Would those trains have a longer route, of course, but its just an observation. I remember the Holly Sub in the 1990s - 10 to 15 trains per day (I can list the symbols), but wow, what a change from back then. If you added the coal trains back in (760, 761, 762, and 763), that's 4 more per day right there. These trains still run, but as NS trains 880, 881, 882, and 883 between Trenton/Monroe and Chicago via Toledo and the NS mainline.
