Amtrak stores two trainsets in Pontiac at the depot every night for 351 and 353. When they shut the old MC Station in Detroit around 1995 and opened the "temporary" station on Woodward in the New Center Area of Detroit the rumor I heard is that they didn't want to or have room to store these trainsets in Detroit so they extended the service to Pontiac. (A bit hard to believe but maybe).
About 20 years ago, 350 turned back as 355 at Detroit Woodward. Likely due to time constraints. May not be a bad idea to revisit the old plan. Could wye at Milwaukee Jct nearby.

These train sets arrive back in the evening as 352 and 354 and the whole train is wyed at Pontiac Yard's north end overnight to return as 351 and 353 to Chicago the next morning

350 arrives from Chicago each afternoon and then heads back to Chicago as 355 a few hours later. They keep a spare locomotive in Pontiac mainly to use on returning 355 as it is pointing south. The power from 350 is wyed with the other two train sets at night so it is ready to do the same thing the next day. In the old days Amtrak ran a push-pull train so to avoid all this.

350/355 are supposed to be running again on October 25 but this has been pushed back since September do to "equipment shortages," So we will see in a couple days if it is back on or not. Not sure why if there is equipment shortages they still keep a spare locomotive idling in Pontiac without these trains to use it on. My guess is there are other reasons for not running this train.
Ahh, makes sense now. Thanks for the info! :)

only engines are wyed in pontiac, not whole train sets as mentioned earlier, due to a CN ruling regarding track inspections on yards tracks/less than main trackage.....

Excellent. I have a shot planned in a very specific location that is only possible with 350 (on a sunny day). Maybe this weekend I'll get lucky. :D

Caught 353 this morning, wasting no time out of the station in Pontiac, took 2 minutes to get from the station to Woodward Avenue. Nice horn salute from the engineer :).

IDTX 4608 has been sitting at the station for 3 days, not sure what that's about. The LED route sign is spiderwebbed on the locomotive per closer examination.

Yes, I did. Thanks. We had the two grandkids today and I couldn't make it to the door but watched you go by from the window.

Amtrak 353 was by Opdyke Road in Bloomfield Hills at 8:57, Charger #4605 in charge, an Amfleet Cafe Car, and four horizons.

If you live in SE Michigan and want some good fall colors, The Opdyke/Kensington crossing still has a good amount of leaves on the trees.

What sounded like Amtrak 355 just went by MP 22.5 on the Holly about three and a half hours late out of Pontiac today, its second day back running again.

If both trains are running close to on time, do they typically meet at Albion?

No clue as to what's up with the 350, but they're over 2 hours late out of Chicago, Amtrak claims mechanical issues to be the case today.

351 is also over an hour late and has been since Jackson. It looked as if 365 held short of Battle Creek to let 351 go first, and then 351 was out of Kalamazoo before 365, departing at 10:31am and 10:41am respectively. Now 365 is in Hammond and 351 is just west of Michigan City. So 365 leapfrogged 351 at some point. Mechanical issues with 351 as well? hmmm

Train 350 just passed MP 22.5 on the Holly, at 4:54 pm almost two and a half hours late. Locomotive on each end, four Venture cars and two metroliners today. Should leave Pontiac fairly close on time as 355.
