Q327-18 @ 12:43 westward reported by DD mp CG91.9 with 444 axles & 6,731 ft. CSX engines #5413 + #5444 & 108 cars. He & N800-16 were delayed at the St Joseph Bridge due to signal issues (bridge was locked down ok).

D705-18 @ 13:04 westward reported by the DD mp CH126.3 with 328 axles. CSX engines #249 + #3356 & 79 cars.

N800-16 @ 13:13:08 eastward Bangor’s Division St crossing mp CG60.93 with BNSF engine #8409 & 130 loaded coal cars & rear BNSF engine #9264. He went into Wells mp CG43.3 to tie down.

Amtrak P370-18 @ 21:47:48 eastward Bangor's Division St crossing mp CG60.93 with IDTX engine #4608 & 3 SuperLiners (1 passenger Off at the station mp CG60.5)

D801-18 @ 23:27 copied his EC1 at mp CG1 with CSX engines #509 + #594 light power to go to the West Olive Power Plant to build an empty coal train. Apparently, these 2 engines are replacing the CSX #3167 + #3440.

N800-17 @ 04:32:32 eastward Bangor’s Monroe St crossing mp CG60.72 with BNSF engine #9119 & 127 loaded coal cars & rear BNSF engine #6159. Getting his CSX power added at Grand Junction mp CG54 & heard the Dispatcher instructions for N800 to take his leading BNSF engine off of his train, and then couple up the CSX power to the cars & have the BNSF #9119 as the leader. I still don't understand the reasoning for this, why not just place the CSX power at the front of the train?

I think the reason to keep the BNSF unit as the leader is it is known to communicate with the unit at the rear in DPU mode. There is a chance that by adding the CSX unit more time will be needed to get everything working.

Oh, ok, thank you :) BNSF about a week or so ago had made a change where they are to place 1 engine on the front & 1 on the rear, whereas before, they would just add the 2 CSX engines as rear pushers but I didn't know of any DPU comm issues with the BNSF leader & rear CSX pushers in the past.

I don’t think they’re necessarily worried about not getting communication, but rather they’d have to take somebody back to the other unit to reset it and pair with a new engine.

Same story goes whenever the EOT needs to be moved. It would seem simple to have a setout on the rear of the train so you can back in and cut it off, but then you’ve gotta go get and move your EOT, so traditionally setouts are at the top. Same story back in the caboose years, too. Less shuffling.

Thank you Alex, that cleared up a lot of confusion for me :) I can see how that eliminates needing a cab there to shuttle a crew person back & forth between the head end & rear of the train.
