As of right now looks like 514 will meet 251 at W Pontiac. 514 is south at Pitt at 14:55.

Southbound 514 by Linden at 3:21pm with CN 5469, CN 5409, "around" 117 cars, plus or minus. A few empties made me mess up my count b/c I can't see the empties well from my upstairs window.

Thanks for giving us a ballpark car count. I like 514 but am rarely over there to see it. I find the size fluctuations in that train interesting. One days its over a hundred and the next it just light power. Does anyone know where the empty intermodal equipment on 491 is coming from lately?

No problem on the car count KC8RBK, thanks.

Some people don't give car counts, some do - I am among those that do. :-)

Yeah, 514 is unpredictable in terms of number of cars, to your point some days it is light power and other days over 100. From my observations however, it is rare that its only light power, and also somewhat rare the count is over 100. However from watching 514 for over a year now, I can say with certainty the car counts are greater than they used to be. My "thinking" on todays count is the possibility that this is yesterdays and todays train in one since yesterday was Thanksgiving day, but this is only a guess. Didn't see / hear 514 yesterday, but not certain they he did not go by.

I try to give axle counts when I hear them. Engine numbers and stuff. I know some people are very into numbers and engine types and all that. Everyone has their fascination. One of the great things about this hobby. There's so much to it it stays interesting forever. Railfan is a broad term that means many things depending on who is using it.

Short eb mixed freight by 205 with 2 cn at 1555. Not in much of a hurry.

The empty wells on 491 are from Moterm.

The size of L514S depends entirely on steamship arrivals at the ports (Halifax and Montreal) and the daily destinations of the containers off-loaded. L514N is a different story, as those container counts reflect whatever shows up at the ramp (Moterm) for eastern destinations. All of this based largely on the fact that the majority of 514's traffic is made up of marine containers - and to a much lesser degree, domestics.

To be fair, you are giving us "platform" counts and not "car" counts on that train, as it is comprised of mostly 3 and 5 pack well cars. Perhaps a more effective way of counting would be to give "container" counts, thus giving a better idea of how much business is really moving back and forth.

Is 251 terminating in Battle Creek tonight or continuing on west to IHB Gibson?
