They leave the engines running, I know on some locomotives an APU is present, keeping the coolant warm (and the bigger engine at operating temp), I imagine they also supply some electrical power. I've heard "the lights are on" a lot recently regarding this train, do you mean ditch lights too?

I just took a quick drive down there and it's just the front light right now. I couldn't get any closer than the Pontiac Trail crossing, otherwise I would've snapped a few pics for you guys :D

16:38 - L305 calling a Medium Approach (R/Y/Y) into the siding at Brighton's WE. I checked not ten minutes ago to find a Stop (R/R). L302 is east of them but past Plymouth.
16:47 - Word is L303 is east of Ensel, they'll need to be talked by a Stop indication at WE Fowlerville.

Regarding the headlights, I always see trailing or parked engines with lights on, but dim.

L301-29 @ 16:59 westward reported by the DD mp CG91.9 with 86 axles & 1,123 feet long. CSX engine #8052 & 20 cars. He has work for Arlington Metals in Sawyer mp CG105.2 He was delayed at the St Joseph Bridge until the track was inspected from the Bridge up to Livingston due to E801-28 having car that had locked up brakes (that car was set off inside Livingston Siding).

17:36 - L305 is backing into the siding at WE Brighton to hook back onto their train. They will wait for L303 there.

18:07 - L303 thru Ann Pere, 7250 leading and 513 pushing hard on the rear end. Calling clear for CH 49 at 18:12. John, if you see this, it was nice meeting you.

19:24 CT: Eastbound at Michigan City - thinking it's a loaded coal train. Amtrak is a short distance behind them, pretty much on time but likely to take delay when this freight takes the siding at New Buffalo to let the flagship by.

19:35 CT: P370 by Michigan City, perfectly on time

C800-26 @ 20:21 eastward was at mp CG126 copying an EC1 for a speed restriction from mp CG114.4 to 114.8 & was told he'll meet Amtrak at Sawyer mp CG106.4 He has BNSF engine #5808 leading which was last logged on railroadfan back in June 2012.

C800-26 eastbound took the siding at Sawyer to let P370-29 eastbound go in front of them, and is now also continuing east, both trains headed towards the Bangor cam?
