What was funny was that the train was carrying trash...which sums up the railroad!

"Just before noon today, a freight train operated by Springfield Terminals derailed five rail cars carrying ten intermodal containers holding solid waste on the Pan Am Southern rail line in Ayer, MA. There were no reported injuries to the crew, no hazardous materials involved, no leaks or spills of any freight and no impacts to the environment. CSX personnel are responding as the incident occurred on a line jointly owned with Norfolk Southern. We are working closely with local first responders to assess the situation and develop a recovery plan. The cause of the incident is under investigation."
Um… if I understand that statement correctly, wouldn’t that be Conrail?

Geography lesson: NS doesn’t run any trains in Massachusetts, do they? It sounds like it was a Springfield Terminal train (now CSX via Pan Am acquisition) perhaps on csx tracks that happened to have NS power. So….what?

NS does indeed operate trains in Massachusetts - that's what Pan Am Southern was all about. Even with the Pan Am acquisition by CSX, NS still retains 50% of the route operated, eventually, by Berkshire and Eastern (G&W).

NS was trying to squeeze into the New England intermodal and automotive market. Pan Am / Guilford was happy to take the cash from them.

They needed to upgrade the former Boston & Maine route via Hossac Tunnel that was down to 15 MPH on most of it.

Very little freight traffic actually goes into Boston anymore. Most of the traffic ends up going to Worcester and Ayer.

East of Worcester on the B&A, Framingham stills gets freight a little closer to Boston, but that's about it. The demise of Beacon Park was the final blow to big time freight in beantown. Large scale New England carload freight was basically finished in the 1970's.

It happened to the MKT, long ago, according to a very old TRAINS magazine.

You hear it from the media all the time - trains just "jump the tracks". It probably got a little edgy and fidgety standing still and just jumped the tracks. Is that too hard to believe? Geez.

Nowadays, I guess anything is possible with railroads.
