ImageWhat'd you say? by David R. Collins, on Flickr

CN SD70M-2 #8849 heads north through Royal Oak while exploding everyone's ear drums with the worst horn for a SD70ACe/SD70M-2 to have, a front facing K5HLL. With the combination of the extremely high air pressure the M-2/ACe uses for the horn and the already VERY loud K5HLL horn, it certainly caused some brief hearing loss.

ImageThe Old Guard by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

SD40-2 helpers like NS 3349 and 3357 still ruled the Altoona help pool in 2006, but change was on the horizon. NS would commence their SD50 rebuilt program over the next few years, and the newly minted SD40Es would bump all SD40-2s out of the helper jobs by 2010. As of present day, the SD40Es themselves have been replaced by SD70ACUs! And if you want to go back even further, the SD40-2s replaced SD40s, SD45s, SD45-2s, and SD35s in helper service. 7/23/2006

Y106 has recrewed Q326 and is bringing the train through Lamar at the west end of Wyoming Yard. Trailing the SD50-2 and CW44AC is a rare ex Conrail SD80MAC. 1/27/2012

A Tri-Rail commuter train arrives at the station in Palm Beach, pushed by one of the agency's distinctive F40PHL-2s. 4/5/2009

ImageWNYP M636 #685 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

One of the Western New York & Pennsylvania's big M636s sits outside the railroad's shops in Olean on a nice fall night. At the time, the WNYP still had its 6 axle MLW products in service, but a downturn in traffic and the purchase of GE AC6000s a few years later would sideline them, apparently for good. 9/30/2016

ImageShort-Lived by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Lake State GP40 4302 and GP40M-3 1178 lead 10 empty CSX grain hoppers north out of Saginaw, heading for Bay City. Not a great photo, but one of the few shots I have of the "Reds" leading an LSRC train during their short tenure on the Lake State. 11/15/2011

ImageMSO Interchange by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Grand Elk 501 arrives at the Michigan Southern interchange in White Pigeon with GP35 #3531. This was once a very busy junction, the MSO being the former LS&MS "Old Road" original mainline from Toledo to Elkhart. 6/4/2009

ImageHaulin' Butt on the NKP by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Back when NS was cool, a C40-9 and a leased GMTX SD60 are doing track speed on the Nickel Plate with train 306 near Thomaston. 10/1/2010

ImageSpartan Cab Dash 8 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

CSX definitely lost some of its charm when the C40-8s left the roster in 2016. Here the #7556 rounds a curve with Q327, nearing the end of its journey from Detroit. 9/11/2008

ImageMoo by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Port of Tillamook Bay GP9 #101 "The Moo" sits with a few ballast cars in Garibaldi, OR, on Labor Day 2022. The unit still wears its number from its previous owner, the Huron & Eastern. 9/5/2022

ImageThe GR&I by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

With a string of insulated boxcars in tow, Tuscola & Saginaw Bay GP35 #390 rolls north on the old PRR through Traverse City. The boxcars were empties, heading to Cherry Growers in Grawn. Not long after this, poor service and rates from TSBY and CSX would drive Cherry Growers away from rail service. Not a great photo by any means, but this is the only time I have ever seen a moving train in Traverse City. 7/7/2006

ImagePere Marquette Freight, Circa 1950 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Flying extra flags and looking like it did during its later years of service for the PM and C&O, Pere Marquette #1225 rolls south with a photo freight on Great Lakes Central near Elsie. For this run by the headlight was off, a common practice in that era of railroading. 4/21/2007

ImageNewaygo Grain Train by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

An elevator crew is using GMTX #2676 to load a grain train at the MAC elevator in Newaygo, during the summer of 2007. The Geep was left by Marquette Rail's Z151 the night before along with the empties. #2676 was one of two extended cab GP38-2s the railroad had leased from GATX. 6/15/2007

ImageZ152 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

For a short while in 2010, Marquette Rail experimented with a Sparta Local that would switch the industries between Grand Rapids and Grant. This was done so the regular Z151 road train would have enough time to go from Baldwin to GR and back without dying. Running as Z152, the south-bound Sparta local has two empty bulkheads from Van's and a hopper from MI Rail Storage behind GMTX #2652, seen here at Fuller on their way to interchange at CSX's Wyoming Yard. Within a year this experiment would end. #2652 was one of two extended cab GP38-2s leased by the MQT. 2/12/2010

ImageLateforsure Limited by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Amtrak #49, the Lake Shore Limited, winds its way through the S-Curve at 484 on NS's Chicago Line. A few years later, this curve would be completely re-worked, with new bridges replacing the middle one in anticipation of a future triple-tracking project. 7/19/2009

ImageStill Getting It Done by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Another snow event, another slew of Charger failures. Battered P42DC #59 shows it can still keep trains moving as it accelerates west of Lansing with train #365, the Bluewater. 1/29/2023

ImagePlaster Creek by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

SD40-2 #8096 has a typical short Q326 behind it as the train crosses over through the plant at Plaster Creek, leaving Wyoming Yard and headed for Detroit. 7/11/2008

ImageSeaboard In The Snow by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

CSX GP38-2 #2667 was the last locomotive on CSX to wear Seaboard System paint, lasting until early 2008. For many of its final years in gray it was assigned to Michigan, and I subsequently saw it quite often. The venerable Geep is seen here mingling with other CSX units in 3 different paint schemes outside of the Wyoming Yard diesel shop in early 2007. 1/20/2007

ImagePleasant Street by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Y106 knocks down the approach at Pleasant Street on its way back to Wyoming Yard. Mother and Slug 6954 and 2354 were assigned to the GR area quite often back then. 1/11/2012

ImageCold Greenies by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The temperature is near 0 degrees as Q326 departs Wyoming Yard on the Sunnyside Lead. Leading the train on this frigid day are pair of former Burlington Northern SD40-2s, then owned by BNSF and FURX, respectively. The track to the right, Maggie's Lead, was removed in 2022, after being OOS and used as a car storage track for most of the last 20 years. 12/1/2006

ImageCoke Loads by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Passing stored autoracks on main 2, coke train K357 accelerates across Ivanrest Ave behind a C40-8 and an SD40-2. These coke trains ran between Detroit and East Chicago. 3/14/2009

ImageRCO Switching by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Y193 goes about its switching duties on the Old Even at Wyoming Yard with MP15DC #1146 and RCPHE4 #9120. The drone was 1 of 4 former GP40s converted to RC drones that called Grand Rapids home for many years. 3 wore Chessie paint while the other was in MOW orange. A few years later all were rebuilt into 2300 series RDMT Road Slugs. 1/25/2007

ImageRail Train by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A welded rail train running as W014-19 heads north through Romulus behind a Slug and Mother combo. The train was headed for Grand Rapids to lay new rail on the GR Terminal Sub. 4/22/2012

ImageAMTK NPCU #90413 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

One of the regularly assigned Cabbages on the Pere Marquette, #90413, pauses momentarily on Wealthy St as passengers de-train in Grand Rapids. The new station eliminated both this traffic-snarling station stop and the need for a unit on both ends of the train. 3/30/2012

ImageChessie Drone by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

RCPHE4 #9120 and GP38-2 #2520 roll down the Old Even Lead at the east end of CSX's Wyoming Yard. A former C&O GP40, the 9120 frequented Michigan for most of its life as an RC drone. Eventually it was rebuilt into an RDMT Road Slug, becoming CSX #2369. The C&O signals protecting the plant at Plaster Creek can be seen in the distance. 4/14/2007

ImageElmhurst 40s by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Left-hand running in true CNW fashion, a pair of SD40-2s lead an intermodal west through Elmhurst. 5/6/2006

ImageAuburn Grain Train by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

On a gloomy February day in 2013, I happened across a Huron & Eastern grain train heading north between Saginaw and Bay City. Amazingly, powering the train were the final 3 units still in their Central Michigan black and white: GP38ACs 8804 and 8802, and GP40-2W 9712. Figuring this would be something I would likely never see again (I was right), I chased it for a while. Seen here rolling under I-75 on Bay City's west side, the train is now on the ex NYC line headed to the grain elevator in Auburn. G&W had just completed their purchase of Rail America, and later that year the retirements, repainting and renumbering would begin. 2/11/2013

ImageGloomy Local by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Out of the gloom comes Y106, charging east at the maximum allowed 40 mph with a short train in tow. 1/11/2023

ImageNorth Charleroi by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Coal traffic is still heavy on the Mon Line as southbound empties pass another train of empties at North Charleroi. The trio of SD60Es were tied down with the C74, while a pair of SD70ACes lead the N11 south. Pretty cool to get a pair of GE-less NS trains in the same frame in 2022. 8/13/2022

ImageLake Central Railtours by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The now-defunct Lake Central Railtours ran many excursions over Tuscola & Saginaw Bay (and later Great Lakes Central) rails throughout most of the 90s and 2000s. Their annual Fall Color Tour, which on this day was operating from Owosso to Cadillac with a side-trip to Yuma and back, is shown here pausing at the station in Mount Pleasant to pick up some passengers. GP35 #385 trailed on the rear of the 3 car train while #393 lead the train north. #385 would lead back south later that day. 10/27/2007

Image466 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

CP 466 near Pinola was always my favorite spot on the Chicago Line in NW Indiana. The west end of a controlled siding that effectively turned this part of the ex NYC Water Level Route into a 3 track railroad, the location was punctuated by an impressive signal bridge spanning all 3 tracks. Here an east-bound Canadian Pacific haulage rights train, 34T, rolls under the bridge with 2 AC4400s leading a pair of leased SD40s. The bridge was removed and replaced with a modern cantilever in 2016. 8/23/2011

ImageNS GP38-2 #5527 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

NS #5527 was 1 of 80 GP38-2s rebuilt in the early 2000s from ex Norfolk & Western and Southern GP38ACs. The rebuilding process included chopping the high noses, conversion to short hood-forward operation, and Dash 2 electronics. #5527 spent most of the winter of 2008 assigned to Grand Rapids, usually working the BG01 or BG02 at the Fisher Body plant in Wyoming, where it is seen resting between assignments in this photo. I can still distinctly recall hearing the engineer saying "3 step on the double nickel two seven" on the radio! 12/13/2008

ImageGrand Rapids Arrival by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Amtrak B32-8PHW #500 has just backed the Pere Marquette around the east leg of the Sunnyside Wye and is now waiting to shove the train north a few miles to Fuller, where it will spend the night. The new Amtrak station would open a few blocks east of here in 2014, eliminating the lengthy back up move. 2/8/2013

ImageGLLX GP9 #4433 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Ex Grand Trunk Western GP9 #4433 works Van's Logistics on Marquette Rail's Z151. Normally assigned to Manistee, 4433 didn't venture down to Grand Rapids very often. 6/11/2013

ImageWyandotte by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A C40-8, SD75I, and a GP38-2 lead a short M371 north through Wyandotte. #2115 was one of three Dash 8s adorned with the 15th Anniversary logo. 4/22/2012

CN's A408 is seen backing east towards the main on the branch to Herscher. The all-EMD lash up on this day consisted of 2 IC SD70s, an IC GP38-2, and a GTW GP38-2. 4/2/2022

Class leader IC SD70 #1000 sits in the yard at Gilman, IL, on a gray April morning. Interestingly, #1000 is DPU-equipped. I'm not sure how many IC SD70s have that capability. 4/2/2022

ImageRainy Z151 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

GLLX #3001's polished bronze bell is ringing and it's horn is blaring as it leads Marquette Rail's south-bound Z151 into Grand Rapids on a rainy September day. 9/13/2008

ImageWings by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The recent influx of foreign power into western Michigan continues in the form of Union Pacific SD70M #3940 leading CSX CW44AC #268 and 61 cars of freight on M326. Rolling onto to Main 2 at Grandville, the train was carrying many reefers of french fries destined for the West Michigan RR. 2/23/2023

ImageCanadian Visitors by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Somehow, CSX managed to keep a set of CN Gevos in the regular rotation on L302 and L303 for the better part of 3 weeks. I'm not complaining, as its nice to see something other than CSX up here anymore, even if they are GEs. Heading east from Grand Rapids on a rare sunny day in February, ET44AC #3014 and ex CREX ES44AC #3979 look nice as they roll down the Plymouth Sub with L303. 2/14/2023

NS frac sand train 61X rounds the bend in Millbury, Ohio on an absolutely beautiful Friday evening. This is the first time I've been to the Cherry Street crossing in a minute, and was shocked to see the 1970's era incandescent lights gone. Honestly though, I kinda like these better.

ImageForeign Power...on Amtrak? by David R. Collins, on Flickr

Amtrak threw a HUGE curveball at Michigan Railfans in Michigan on February 26th, 2023, with Amtrak California F59PHi #2007 hitching a ride on Amtrak Wolverine #350 bound for Pontiac. This unit is fitted with a shunt enhancing device, and as I type this, is testing electrical shunts around CN’s Pontiac Yard.

Here we see the one of a kind consist sitting at the Pontiac, Michigan stations' house track.

The rare catches keep coming for Holly Sub railfans as a YN2 CSX Dash 8, a CN dash 9 and two NS ES44AC's team up on the front of CN E251, a mere two days after an Amtrak California F59PHi arrived in town. Shot at the former GTW/SEMTA Charing Cross station in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

ImagePleasant Street by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

L303 passes under the Pleasant St cantilever as the train works east out of Grand Rapids. Pleasant Street, at one time, was a very busy junction. The Pere Marquette, Pennsylvania, and New York Central all crossed here, with many trains heading into the large Grand Rapids Union Station. Until a few years ago, the interlocking tower still stood in the blank space to the right. 2/23/2023

Thankfully dodging ExtremePadreFan and some of the other Fullerton regulars, I was able to click several BNSF, Amtrak, and Metrolink trains on a pleasant March afternoon. While not the most scenic spot in the world, one cannot deny Fullerton is a very busy place. 3/9/2011

The Holly sub was originally intended to have 4 tracks. Back in the 80s they ran lots of commuter trains and planned to build the Holly sub into a 4 track raceway for the commuter trains. DaveO is pointing out that the bridge shows the history of their ideas to add the next to tracks to the left of the 2 current ones.

SD80MAC's Fullerton photo reminded me that I recently scanned a couple of my own. I have the exact dates somewhere but think this is February 1997 or 98. Fullerton may not be the "most scenic" but considering the downright ugly environment of some parts of metro LA, I will definitely take it! I recall running into other railfans over my years visiting Fullerton, but no insane foamers. Great variety here. I've shot dozens if not hundreds of photos around Fullerton over the years.

ImageConrail 60 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

One of the SD60s inherited from Conrail looks great in the March sunshine as Q326 leaves Grand Rapids for Detroit. A rare bird on Conrail and CSX, the standard cab SD60s were all retired in 2019. 3/10/2007

ImageMI City Branch by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

What was once the Nickel Plate's Michigan City branch is now operated by Pioneer's Elkhart & Western and the South Shore. The CSS has the northern half, from just north of Walkerton to Michigan City. The out of service bridge over the Kankakee River divides the the now separate entities. While it may be just a branch line now, the CSS has a healthy amount of traffic on it, including the CN interchange at Stillwell and the large former Army depot, now a massive transloading facility. The Shore's tri-weekly train on the branch is seen here north-bound crossing E State Road 4 on its way back to Michigan City. 8/23/2011

ImageClimbing Thornapple by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Any carbon left in those motors was gone as a CEFX SD40M-2 and a CSX SD50-2 claw their out of the Thornapple River valley with a heavy Q335. Built as an SD40 for the Southern Pacific, #3112 had a long career for both the SP and a few different leasing firms. Based on what I can find, I don't think it exists anymore. 8/27/2007

Tied down just north of the wye in La Crosse, MBRX SDM #815 is shut down for the weekend with a small train. #815 is one of only a handful of SDMs remaining on the Chesapeake & Indiana, after new owners MB Rail scrapped or sold off most of them. 4/3/2022

ImageRiver Rouge Draw by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A south-bound CN freight rolls off the drawbridge over the River Rouge, crossing over and heading ultimately for the former DT&I yard in Flatrock. This train was running just ahead of the Santa Train, I think it might've been M383? 12/1/2012

ImageThis Bridge Don't Swing No More by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

All four of Marquette Rail's SD40-2s are on the train today as Z151 rolls north across the Grand River, after having interchanged with CSX at Wyoming Yard. This once double tracked bridge used to swing for river traffic, once upon a time. 2/23/2023

ImageWayne by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A pair of SD70M-2s rumble across the CF&E diamond at Wayne with Q149. In a moment, they will also hit the NS diamond behind me. "Wayne" is what CN refers to as this spot, just outside of Valparaiso, where the GTW crosses the PRR and NKP at grade. 7/22/2011

CSX Train Y121-10 heads East towards Holland's Waverly Yard with a cut of loaded scrap gondolas from Padnos in Downtown.

In the lead is CSX GP38-2 #2768 (Built as CR 8179 in 1977). It was acquired by CSX in 1999 following the split of Conrail between CSX & Norfolk Southern.

L303 is east-bound on main 2 while Y106 waits for a signal on main 1. Y106 was waiting for Marquette Rail's Z151 to clear about a mile west of here. 2/23/2023

ImageWest On #2 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Two AC4400s and a SOO SD60 head for Chicago on Main 2 at Grandville. It's summer 2005, the final year for the bulk of CP's traffic across Michigan on CSX. 7/16/2005

ImageTie It Down by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The engineer has just tied down and locked up MMRR #24 in the siding at Lowell after their 3rd trip to Lowell on a busy fall day. An absolutely massive train required them to take it east from Grand Rapids in 3 parts due to the tonnage, necessitating them tying down here due to approaching the limit of their hours of service. The crew was also kind enough to have given me a cab ride on this day! 10/3/2006

ImageSoon There'll Be Trouble by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The crew of L303 gave me an enthusiastic wave as they got underway from Fox after meeting Y106. The trip would soon go south in a hurry however, as lead unit CW44AC #108 would run out of fuel about 10 miles east of here due to a faulty fuel gauge. The crew would ultimately leave their train at Elmdale, run light back to Grand Rapids, turn the engines on the way, and eventually continue east with the Gevo in the lead. 2/7/2023

One of the crown jewels of the Southeastern Railway Museum, restored Southern E8A #6901, pokes its nose out of the shop at the museum. Not long after this, the engine went to NS for some extensive rebuilding that involved new injectors, new wheels, upgraded wiring and new piping. As far as I know, it is operational. 9/7/2013

ImageCSXT RCPHE4 #9120 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Long before the word "Drone" became synonymous with quad-copters, these were the only drones I knew. CSXT #9120 was a former C&O GP40 that CSX had gutted and made into an RCPHE4 (Remote Control Platform Huntington EMD 4 axles) drone. #9120, #9121 and #9122 all retained their Chessie colors after being converted, and were fixtures in yards in Michigan for years. Here we see #9120 working the west end of Wyoming yard with GP38-2 #2520.

The idea behind the drones was that any locomotive could be MU'd with them and be run via remote control. The drone itself also provided additional stopping power in the form of its brakes, but could not provide any extra pulling power due to not having any traction motors. The actual diesel engines were left in them for weight. CSX also had a fleet of former GE Dash 7s of the 4 and 6 axle variety that were also drones. While the concept was good, the added work of basically maintaining an extra locomotive just to house the RC equipment eventually became too much in CSX's eyes, not to mention dragging around the extra dead weight. The drones were all eventually retired and the equipment was fitted to conventional EMD Geeps and SD40s. The EMD drones like #9120 were rebuilt into RDMT Road Slugs and mated with GP38-2 and GP40-2 mothers. 4/13/2007

L303's power heads north around the wye past the old Amtrak station, which has recently been repainted into a hideous shade of green. 2/23/2023

ImageDurand Mornings by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

As a newly-licensed teen, there were few better places to me than Durand. It was relatively close by, the depot offered a nice place to sit, and the trains were still plentiful back then. On a particularly nice morning, a single UP AC4400 is in charge of L500 as the train departs Durand yard around the Port Huron wye, heading back to Flint. Huron & Eastern 8802 and 5492 can be seen in the distance. 9/16/2007

ImageITC GP7 #1605 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Built in 1953, restored Illinois Terminal GP7 #1605 has been part of the collection at the Illinois Railway Museum since the early 1990s. The venerable Geep was donated to the museum by Norfolk Southern, from what I can tell. Later becoming ITC #1506 and N&W #3406, the museum chose to repaint the unit into its as-delivered paint scheme and number. Seen here as part of the Locomotive Review during the annual Diesel Days festival. 7/20/2013

Marquette Rail's Z151 is seen here rolling through Grand Rapids' west side neighborhood. The jog in the mainline traces the outline of where the former Pere Marquette West Side Yard once was. 2/23/2023

ImageS327 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A pair of SD70MACs roll down the double track towards Grandville with a very late Q327, running as an S327 on this day. Q327 was always a nocturnal train during this time period. 9/8/2007

Imagegotcha by David R. Collins, on Flickr

Having family history with the Western Maryland, I had been wanting to catch CSX's Western Maryland sticker ES40DC #5327, and after evading me for years, I finally caught it leading a grain train by New Boston.

ImageTaking a chance by David R. Collins, on Flickr

After a failed chase of NS B73, I was heading down to New Boston to see if anything was happening at TDSI when I heard M510 calling the signal at Eureka Road with a Dash 8 leader, I happened upon a crossing in Romulus, Grant Street, and made it with about 45 seconds to spare. Worth it though to always catch a YN2 Dash 8 leader.

ImageNo longer a smart bus by David R. Collins, on Flickr

Amtrak 355 makes his way south by Ferndale, with charger #4629 leading the way. 4629 no longer has the LED sign on the front that gives them the name that I call them "smart busses".

ImageHLCX GP40 #4225 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

This former B&O GP40 was right at home on CSX rails in Holland, MI when I caught it on the Y223 yard job. This was my first time working with a locomotive that had the horn mounted on top of the cab (like they all used to be). No wonder all of the old heads are deaf! 7/18/2014

ImageThat BN Green by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

One of the hundreds of SD40-2s originally rostered by the Burlington Northern was by this point part of the Helm Leasing fleet as it lead Q326 out of Grand Rapids with CSX 8816 trailing. The colorful leaser era of CSX was quickly coming to an end by this point. 1/25/2007

ImageEast End Elmdale by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

L303 rolls past the old depot and signal building at the east end of Elmdale. Once the location of the junction with the "Turkey Trail" to Saginaw and a branch to Freeport, Elmdale is pretty quiet these days. 3/23/2023

ImageTired MACs by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

An aging pair of BNSF SD70MACs leads an empty coal train north past the depot and visitor's center in Dalton, GA. The junction here, while not terribly scenic, was pretty busy during the few hours I visited. CSX crossing NS, but I couldn't tell you what subdivisions they were. 9/28/2013

ImageWant Fries With That? by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

MAC Daddy #4575 leads L303 east as fast as it can during a momentary break in the cloud cover near Alto. It was a slow slog through here as the single SD70AC worked up the grade with 5,000 tons. I will never tire of shooting tear-drop window EMDs. 3/23/2023

Grand Elk's 120 job emerges from the Bluelinx spur after having spotted a lumber car in their lot. While waiting for the signal onto CSX, the Elk crew will often work Bluelinx since, well, it's right there. 2/23/2023

A single rebuilt SD70AC leads 76 cars of freight east over the Thornapple River on train L303. I'm glad to see the ex Conrail SD70s are getting the rebuild treatment, too. 3/23/2023

ImagePhase II Hurratij by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Amtrak #66, the original Phase II heritage unit painted for Amtrak's 40th Anniversary in 2011, pauses next to the Market St signals in Grand Rapids as passengers get off the train. We got spoiled with the Pere Marquette that summer, as nearly every single Amtrak heritage unit made an appearance on the train at least once. This would be the only time I ever saw #66 in this scheme, as it would be heavily damaged in a grade crossing accident not long after this and removed from service. I believe it is still sitting in Beech Grove, likely waiting eventual scrapping. The old C&O searchlights here were also not long for the world, coming down in the fall of 2013. Not one of my better night photos, but I'll take it considering the subject matter! The GRPD Crown Vic I inadvertently worked in nicely dates this pic, too. 7/9/2013

Actually this is an SD80MAC leading the train. I thought you would understand that, since your username is SD80MAC and all.
