ImageMainstays by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

An SD40-2 and a C40-8W, for years the mainstays of CSX freight power, work hard as they lead Q324 east through Albion on a sunny fall morning. #8408 was built as C&O SD40 #7457 in 1966. 11/12/2011

ImageBensenville Local by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A CP GP20C-ECO departs the east end of Bensenville Yard with a small train. I'm not sure if this was a local or transfer or what. CP has 98 of these unique little Geeps that were rebuilt from GP9u cores. About the only things retained from the GP9s were the frames and trucks. 10/2/2022

ImageGrain-Grain Go Away by David R. Collins, on Flickr

During the height of the pandemic, It seemed like quite a few of the trains on the weekly trips I took to the Chicago-line were grain trains. I've always found these trains to be quite boring, with all covered hoppers with the NS logo on the side.

With that aside, here's NS grain train 56K thundering east through Millbury, Ohio on a gorgeous June day.

ImageOne of those days... by David R. Collins, on Flickr

October 27th, 2022 was one of those days where you feel like catching a train, no matter how common it is, just because the weather is so nice.

I decided to go out to Opdyke/Kensington Roads in Bloomfield Hills for a Holly Subdivision staple, Amtrak 353. The wolverine from Pontiac to Chicago, doing every bit of track speed kicking up tons of leaves along Main 1.

About the last thing I ever expect to see on NS anymore is a standard cab leader. So we were quite pleased when N22-13 rolled around the corner with a pair of SD40Es and an SD60E on the Mon Line just south of Shire Oaks yard. The Conrail-era tri-lights still at this location made the scene even better! NS #6306 is 1 of only 11 original NS SD50s rebuilt into an SD40E. 8/13/2022

ImageTried and True by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

At 30 years (or close to that) of age, CSX's CW40-8 fleet has dwindled in recent years, going in and out of storage with some being sold or outright scrapped. Some of them continue to hang on, their reactivation a welcome sight for engineers who are sick of running trains with Trip Optimizer. A pair of the old GEs are seen here leading L302 around the curve at Seymour surrounded by fall color. 10/25/2022

ImageEMD Trio by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A nice trio of EMD products consisting of an ST70AH, SD40-2, and an SD40-3 are rolling east on the Plymouth Sub with the daily L303 to Detroit. After hearing 8900 lead L302 into Grand Rapids the night before, many of us kept an ear out, hoping that it would somehow lead back east again. As luck would have it, all 3 units were facing west, so they spun the whole set before leaving. 11/6/2022

ImageYard Power by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A GP15T (1507) and an RCPHG4 (9135) roll down the Even Lead at the east end of Wyoming yard. Years later, I would get to run many GP15Ts as remotes in yard service here. Good little engines, though they were pretty gut-less on their own. 11/10/2007

ImageOld-Fashioned Local by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Y106 is running east through the snow with a GP38-2, boxcar, and caboose. During this time period, Y106 only worked as far east as Fox, with D708 out of Lansing handling the industries in Alto. This was later changed to Y106's working limits being extended another 15 miles east.

Ratty YN1 #2631 was a fixture in western Michigan for years. It was finally repainted in 2009, going directly from YN1 into YN3! The caboose on this job, Chessie System #903109, was well-cared for by the crews, and even had a working coal stove. 2/6/2007

MBRX GP16 #1702 sits next to the depot in North Lima coupled to a string of boxcars. The Youngstown & Southeastern was part of the Indiana Boxcar Corporation family of roads, which were all purchased by MB Rail in 2020. 8/14/2022

ImageBusy Battle Creek by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A pair of GTW GP38-2s are busy switching at the west end of CN's Battle Creek yard while various west-bound trains and power sets get fueled at the fuel pad on a clear spring day. Battle Creek was still a very busy place at this point, but changes were coming. The E.H.H. regime would try to more or less close the yard completely a few years later, but this soon proved to be impractical. Battle Creek is still a busy place for CN, but not compared to this era or the years before it. 3/13/2007

ImageNS GP38-2 #5318 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

An ex Conrail GP38-2 rests between switching moves on job BG02 at GM's large Fisher Body plant in Wyoming. The Fisher plant was largely the main reason Conrail and later Norfolk Southern held onto the Grand Rapids branch north of Kalamazoo. Upon the plant's closure in 2009, NS would lease out everything north of Elkhart to Watco's Grand Elk.

NS #5318 was built in 1973 as Penn Central #8139. 8/27/2007

ImageCH 118 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

ST70AH #8900 leads an SD40-2 and an SD40-3 past the searchlights at Haddix Road with L303 bound for Detroit. With new Safetrans signals piling up at different spots along the Plymouth Sub, these relics don't have much time left. 11/6/2022

ImageTSBY GP35 #2681 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Tuscola & Saginaw Bay GP35 #2681 sits on the main in Chesaning after having followed PM #1225 with the North Pole Express up from Owosso. After the festivities are done, #2681 will couple to the rear of the train and pull it back south.

While TSBY and GLC have always been synonymous with the fabled Ann Arbor GP35s, the railroad(s) also rostered a trio of ex Southern GP35s, with AAR type B trucks just like their Ann Arbor cousins. The story goes that these units were originally purchased for parts, but two were found to be in such good shape (2648 and 2681) that they were put into service. While 2648 was repainted into TSBY yellow, 2681 had the rest of it's Southern markings painted over in black. The unit remained this way until a major failure sidelined it permanently in 2007. It was scrapped in 2016, as I recall. 12/3/2005

ImageBotsford Yard by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Three ex Conrail GP40-2s idle away on a quiet spring morning at NS's Botsford Yard in Kalamazoo. There were around 10 GP40-2s in the NS 3060-3070 series equipped with the ITCS cab signaling equipment needed to operate on the Michigan Line west of here, and as such many evaded the spray booth at Altoona for years. Interestingly, these three units illustrate three different applications of the Conrail Quality logo. Modelers take note! 3/13/2007

ImageLincoln Service by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A south-bound Lincoln Service train rolls into the station at Bloomington, IL behind AMTK #69 (nice). At the time, the track work to bring this line up to 110 mph was just beginning, and UP still fielded a few freight trains in both directions. 12/10/2010

ImageGray Bird by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

It was August 2007, and I had just gotten a brand new Canon Powershot S3 IS, which may as well have been the Hubble Space Telescope compared to the Kodak point and shoot I had been using up until then. It was a nice day, so I hopped in my car and drove east until I ran into Q335 near Clarksville, clicking off the miles on the Plymouth Sub behind a gray CEFX SD40M-2 and a CSX SD50-2. 8/27/2007

Image34 Miles From Saginaw by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Q321 is finally rolling south again after signal issues with the CN diamond at Kearsley. An SD60I leads an SD50-3 and a GP38-2 as they pass the concrete milepost at 34 on the Saginaw Sub. Today, this part of the line is single track and operated by the LSRC. 5/3/2013

Mid Michigan #24 arrives in Ionia, then the far east end of the Grand Rapids Eastern RR's former Grand Trunk Western Grand Rapids Sub. By this point there was only one customer in town, Gallagher's Fertilizer, which would get an occasional tank car of anhydrous ammonia. This was one of their last trips to Ionia before the track was abandoned and removed in 2008-2009. Fortunately/unfortunately, this was also the only time I ever caught the GRE running out here. 11/2/2007

ImageAnnie Caboose by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

One of the Ann Arbor's distinctive streamlined cupola cabeese once sat next to the former C&O mainline in Traverse City, along with an ex AA boxcar as part of a historical display. Unfortunately, the equipment was repeatedly vandalized in TC, and has since been moved to a new home at the Buckley Old Engine Show in Buckley, MI. I've always thought this style of caboose was cool. It is interesting to note that both of the AA's parent railroads, the Wabash and later the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton, also operated this style of caboose, though they had no relation to each other. 7/6/2007

Image1225 on the NYC by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

15 years ago, the North Pole Express ran up the former New York Central Saginaw branch from Owosso to Chesaning. The train was much smaller in those days, and most of the trip was between 10 and 20 mph. The Saginaw County fairgrounds in Chesaning hosted the North Pole. A few years later, the decision was made to move the North Pole over to Ashley and run up the ex Ann Arbor mainline instead, somewhat due to deteriorating track conditions on the branch north of Oakley. SRI volunteers actually invested a lot of time and money into track work between Oakley and Chesaning in order to continue running 1225 up there, but eventually it became more than they could feasibly do. While the ex AA line is nice, the old NYC was more straight north/south and offered some interesting photos, like the classic Michigan Bean Co elevator in Henderson. 12/8/2007

ImageSouth End of Hughart by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A good friend of mine has an incredible photo taken in the same spot, some 40+ before mine, of a pair of PRR RS27s leading a freight south. This is on the "Old Road", part of the original LS&MS mainline between Elkhart, IN, and Toledo, OH. Grand Elk's 120 job, running as Z439 on CSX, rolls up the Old Even lead at the east end of CSX's Wyoming Yard. Trailing the former Wisconsin & Southern SD40M-2 are 18 cars for CSX. 12/15/2022

Three west-bounds and a set of engines await crews and fuel at the fuel pad in Battle Creek, on a fine spring day in March of 2007. There sure was a lot more variety back then! 3/13/2007

ImageChicago Wye by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A west-bound GTW freight is rounding the Chicago Wye from the Holly Sub to the Flint Sub behind SD40 #5916 and GP38-2 #5829 in Durand. Unfortunately this print was very fuzzy and there wasn't a lot I could do to it. I believe this is also a Bruce Benson shot, taken circa 1990.

ImageDecember Fog by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

With a fresh crew aboard, U302 prepares to head west from Fox on a very dark and foggy December morning. SD40-3 #4042 (with a unique yellow plow) leads ES44AH #3054 and 117 cars. 12/11/2022

ImageThe Last Two by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The last two GP9R rebuilds completed by the GTW Battle Creek Shops were #4634 and #4635 in early 1993. Since this coincided directly with CN's decision to consolidate the GTW, DW&P, and CV under the "CN North America" brand, the pair of GP9Rs were painted into the new CN scheme during their rebuild. Both units are seen here at Durand yard in May of 1993, presumably in town to be displayed at the annual Durand Railroad Days festival. This is a scanned print from my collection, originally taken by Bruce Benson.

Amtrak 353 flies through Lawton at the maximum authorized speed of 110 mph. At left is the classic field stone depot, built by the Michigan Central in 1897. My guess is trains haven't stopped here since before Amtrak. 12/4/2022

ImageAnnie Boxcar by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

One of the Ann Arbor's 40' boxcars once sat next to the former C&O mainline in Traverse City, along with an ex AA caboose as part of a historical display. Unfortunately, the equipment was repeatedly vandalized in TC, and has since been moved to a new home at the Buckley Old Engine Show in Buckley, MI. 7/6/2007

ImageCV GP9 #4548 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Central Vermont GP9 #4548 sits in the yard in Durand circa 1990. This unit was sold to the Huron & Eastern and became HESR #105 in 1990-1991. Based on that information, this photo may show 4548 in-transit via the GTW and Central Michigan to its new owner in the Thumb. Some of these did come to the GTW in the 80s and ran around in this point for a while, but I'm not sure if this was one of those or not. Most of them were rebuilt into GP9Rs. I believe this is a Bruce Benson photograph. A fuzzy print I did my best to clean up!

It's April 1, 1997 and a bit of a turnover day as seen at the Amtrak Station in Dearborn. The venerable F40PH units which powered Michigan trains across the state for almost two decades were suddenly replaced by the fleet of reassigned P32-8BWH units getting bumped from long distance trains. NPCU #90368 is itself a fairly new creation at this time, the first of what would be a small fleet of F40 carbodies given a new life as unpowered cab units. This is the first P32 I saw on the Michigan Line, and may have been during the first week that they were assigned to this route. Here, we have #500, the class leader shoving on the rear of Twilight Limited No. 355. The Pepsi Cans stayed on Michigan service trains for about 3-4 years before being reassigned again.

ImageIn-bound @ Godfrey by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Marquette Rail #3391 leads in-bound Z151 west on the Sunnyside Lead with 62 cars for CSX. At left is the spur for Gelock Heavy Movers, who hasn't done anything by rail for the least decade now. 12/15/2022

ImageEMDX GP38-2 #791 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

EMD Leasing GP38-2 #791 (ex CR/PC #7991) working for the BN, presumably in the Seattle area. Print is dated "early 90s" but doesn't get more specific than that. This was one of one hundred GP38-2s which were taken back by EMD after their 15 year lease expired, much to the chagrin of Conrail! Photographer unknown.

ImageGTW SW1200 #1512 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

SW1200 #1512 mingles with other GTW units at the engine house in Flint, sometime in the early 1990s. 1512 was 1 of 14 SW1200s ordered with road trucks, class lights, 26L brakes and MU capabilities for the purpose of running long distance locals. After the rules changed in the 60s requiring trains operating over X number of miles had to have locomotives equipped with a toilet, these units settled into yard and transfer service. The 1500s were the last end cab switchers retired by GTW, the last ones being sold in 1998. 1512 survives today, owned by Great Lakes Locomotive and working hard for a living on the West Michigan Railroad.

This is a scanned print from my collection, photographer unknown.

ImagePorter Branch by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

At the time, this was just another train to shoot. But looking back on it now, there's a few things to like: ex Conrail C40-8W (ex CR 6053), Conrail tri-lights, and an actual TRAIN on the Porter Branch north of Willow Creek! 4/3/2016

Huron & Eastern 702's arrival in Durand is heralded by the distinctive glug of old GE FDLs. C30-7 #5175, U23Bs #8903 and #8905, and a pair of Geeps power the train on this day. 12/8/2007

ImageCMGN GP38AC #8803 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

On a cold winter day, we find Central Michigan #8803 idling next to the Durand yard office. #8803 was one of four former B&O GP40s rebuilt by Helm for the CMGN into GP38ACs, which involved removing the turbocharger and replacing the generator with an alternator. 8803 was traded back to Helm for GP40-2W #9712 in 1997, and is now PRLX #3818.

A CP SD70ACU leads an extra autorack train north through Romulus, it seems like railroads aren't too impressed with these engines with Norfolk Southern quickly withdrawing their fleet and selling the units off.

3 Canadian Pacific SD40-2s roar up the hill at Fox with a Canada-bound train consisting entirely of containers on flat cars. A few months later, these trains that ran for nearly 20 years over CSX would be no more. 11/12/2005

ImageRecession by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

During the great recession of 2008-2009, CSX stuffed autoracks and other storage cars onto every available track in western Michigan. Headed by an ex Conrail SD60, Q327 knocks down the Plaster Creek pot signal on the Sunnyside lead as it rolls into Wyoming yard past a line of storage cars in Old 17 rack. 7/17/2009

ImageElkhart & Western Switching by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Without a runaround at the west end of the line, the E&W must utilize a locomotive on each end of the train in order to switch their largest customer, the Buzzi Unicem terminal. GP9 #911 waits in the clear the crew pulls a cut of cement cars ahead with GP10 #1000. 6/12/2008

ImageBig Boy #4005 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" #4005 is displayed at the Forney Transportation Museum in Denver, CO. #4005 is the oldest of the preserved Big Boys and (until 4014's recent conversion) was the only one converted to burn oil. Done as an experiment during a coal strike, the conversion was not successful and the 4005 was converted back to coal. 4005 also has the dubious distinction of being the only one of its class to be seriously wrecked. In the early 1950s, a miscommunication amongst a track gang mistakenly lined 4005 and its train into a siding. The train, which was traveling near 50 mph, had no time to slow down and derailed on the sharp curve into the siding. The entire head end crew was killed when the engine rolled onto its side. 4005 still has scars on its flanks from where it plowed into the ground. 10/21/2021

ImageOdd Switching Power by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

About the last thing I expected to see resting at the west end of CSX's Wyoming Yard was a Santa Fe SD40-2. Apparently the Y103 crew had snagged it from the engine house that morning and used it for the rest of that week before someone got wise and sent it back to Chicago! 1/13/2007

Huron & Eastern's 800 job rolls into Saginaw from the Thumb behind GP38-2 #3866 and GP38AC #3838. The 800 job handles all of the traffic from the HESR's far flung ex PM, NYC, and GTW lines in the Thumb, and interchanges it with the Lake State and the HESR's other jobs. It was no stranger to the former Pere Marquette, either, having been built as C&O #7467. 3/11/2007

ImageCalm Before The Storm by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A recently rebuilt ex Conrail SD70MAC and a rebuilt CM44AC grind up the hill at Fox with east-bound L303. The light dusting of snow on the ground would soon be greatly augmented by a blizzard that would dump over 2 feet of snow in Grand Rapids over Christmas weekend. 12/22/2022

ImageOak Street by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A west-bound GTW freight is negotiating the Chicago Wye from the Holly Sub to the Flint Sub behind GP40-2 #6420. At the left are the remains of the west-bound pick up and set out tracks. In Durand's hay day, the many yard jobs would drag cuts of cars out to these tracks to be grabbed by passing trains, eliminating the need for the through trains to back into the yard. This practice fell out of favor in the 1980s as the Durand terminal was gradually down-graded and ultimately sold to the Central Michigan Railway in 1987. This is a scanned print from my collection, originally taken by Bruce Benson in spring 1990.
