ImageForgotten by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Sitting damaged and picked clean of anything of value, the Southern heritage unit waits for movement to Altoona for eventual repair. This unit was damaged after it hit a rock slide and sat in this spot for many months. As I understand it, it was finally recently moved to the shops. 8/13/2022

ImageZebras in Durand by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

L500 rolls around the High Wye in Durand behind a pair of Zebra-striped GP40-2Ws. This was the only time I can remember seeing a wide cab GP40 on 500, GTW GP38-2s and GP9Rs being far more ubiquitous. 2/20/2010

A Santa Fe wide vision caboose sits in BNSF's yard in Golden, CO, looking a bit worse for the wear. With all of its windows and doors plated over, this old caboose is now just a shoving platform. 10/20/2021

Huron & Eastern 702 has just arrived from Bay City and is in the process of yarding their train with B30-7 #5492 and GP40-2W #9712. 4/29/2011

ImageNS GP15-1 #1456 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Built in 1979, NS #1456 was one of one hundred GP15-1s built for Conrail that spelled the end for many older EMD F units and GP7s/GP9s. With the fleet divided between NS and CSX in 1999, this unit would soldier on for its new owner still in Conrail blue. About a year after I shot it working a local here at Pine, NS decided they were done with the GP15s and sold them all to Larry's Truck & Electric. Today #1456 works for Patriot Rail's Louisiana & Northwestern. 5/27/2006

ImageClassic Surfliner by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

While I certainly wish I could've shot more of them, I glad I made it out to California twice to shoot the Surfliner F59s. Here north-bound train #769 rolls along the Pacific Coast Highway near Sea Cliff. 3/6/2011

ImageGTW GP9R #4625 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Built in 1954 as GTW 4543, rebuilt in 1992 at the Battle Creek shops into a GP9R. In the rebuild, the locomotives received a complete rewire, new 645 power assemblies, 26L brakes, and new cabs and noses that were built by VMV. #4625 is seen here working L500 in Durand back in May of 2010. 5/1/2010

ImagePalmer Lake MAC by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad GP9 #101, known colloquially as "The Moo", sits tied to a string of ballast hoppers in Garibaldi. This ex C&O unit became stranded out here when the middle section of the Tillamook branch was badly damaged in a storm in 2007. Now operated by the Oregon Coast Scenic, The Moo sees occasional use as a back up for their main diesel, Great Northern F7A #274. 9/5/2022

GTW 4543 was built in 1957 IIRC. It was in the group 4539-4546.

Great picture of the Moo engine.

When I say this, take it seriously, photos don’t do the ALC-42’s justice, THEY. LOOK. AMAZING. I found that out for myself once I arrived at Chicago Union Station on my train from Detroit. Here’s one of them, #304, sitting on track #3 at Chicago Union Station. Thanks to Conductor Hugo on my train for letting me shoot this photo!

Unfortunately their reliability seems to lag quite a bit behind their looks.
Considering the location of the photo, you did manage to get a decent photo there.

ImageOctober Sky by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The timing of CSX's OCS arriving into Grand Rapids coincided nicely with my drive home from work. As I pulled up to this spot, I figured I'd settle for some late evening shadows as the sun had been hidden by dark clouds pretty much all day. As luck would have it, the sun broke through the clouds maybe a minute before the train came around the corner. With the entire scene bathed in that beautiful Fall evening light, I got everything I wanted and then some! 10/7/2022

The title of this post is what my dad said describing Santa Fe Junction. There were trains left right and center every few minutes, so his phrase was certainly accurate. However, the first true over/under meet I was waiting for occurred the last day I was there. With a BNSF manifest crawling under the bridge while an eastbound loaded UP Coal Train passes over on the fly-high track (as I call it).
