ImageSD40A by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Not a great photo, but a wicked cool consist none the less. Here an IC SD40-2R (built originally as an SD40A), HLCX SD40-2, and a GTW GP38-2 lead A481 north around the Chicago Wye in Durand back in 2005. The SD40As were built on SDP45 frames, giving them an extra long fuel tank compared to a standard SD40. 10/22/2005

ImageMorning on the Bessemer by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Not long after sunrise, a southbound CN ore train rumbles under the signal bridge near Branchton, PA on the old Bessemer & Lake Erie. A pair of SD70M-2s up front and one more on the rear have the train moving along at a good clip. 8/13/2022

ImageThe Lake O Dip by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

P001-15 negotiates the "Lake O Dip" as it heads west across the Plymouth Sub towards Grand Rapids, where it will spend the night. The business train had started out early that morning in Cumberland, MD. Pretty impressive to go from there all the way to Grand Rapids in a single day! 8/17/2022

ImageWAMX GP38 #3879 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Purchased from Conrail in 1985, it is the only GP38 left on the AA after the other two were sold off a few years back. This one was deemed in decent enough shape that it was rebuilt and repainted as the AA's "heritage" unit. 8/14/2022

Built 10/1969 as PC 7802 -> CR 7802 -> AA 7802 -> WAMX 3879

ImageDravosburg Tunnel by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A pair of Union Railroad MP15DCs are working hard as they roar out of the tunnel at Dravosburg, PA with a train of hot steel ingots. The hot slabs, still hot enough that we could feel the heat coming off of them as the train rolled by, were destined for US Steel's Irvin Works for further refining. 8/13/2022

AVR1 rolls through the cut in Pittsburgh on NS trackage rights behind a pair of ex Conrail SD60Ms. The wrought iron fences that line the tracks here date from the Pennsylvania Railroad era. 8/13/2022

ImageEMD-Goodness by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

About the last thing I ever expect to see on NS anymore is a standard cab leader. So we were quite pleased when N22-13 rolled around the corner with a pair of SD40Es and an SD60E on the Mon Line just south of Shire Oaks yard. The Conrail-era tri-lights still at this location made the scene even better! NS #6306 is 1 of only 11 original NS SD50s rebuilt into an SD40E. 8/13/2022

ImageQuintet by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Five Union MP15s (on what we think was the 66A job) work their way towards Clairton with an empty coke train. Unbeknownst to us at the time, a loaded coke train was just behind us about to pop out of the tunnel, which we would unfortunately miss as we were trying to get ahead of this guy again. Oh well! 8/14/2022

ImageGP50 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Following the old IC branch west of Rantoul, IL, my friends and I were hoping to find the rare GP28 owned by the elevator here in Dewey. We were a bit surprised to see this ex CNW GP50 instead. The Co-Op still owns the GP28, which is parked in the barn with mechanical issues and from what we understand, is for sale. 4/2/2022

CSX's OCS rounds the curve at East Paris in Kentwood shortly after sunset. I dare say CSX has the best-looking OCS these days, excluding maybe Kansas City Southern. 8/17/2022

ImageAmerican Valor by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Laid up since 2008, the 767' American Valor slumbers quietly at her berth in Toledo. Sold in 2017 to Algoma Central Corp and again to Lower Lakes more recently, it seems very unlikely that the 1953-built laker will ever see service again. 8/12/2022

ImageMon Line by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Coal traffic is still heavy on the Mon Line as southbound empties pass another train of empties at North Charleroi, PA. The trio of SD60Es were tied down with the C74, while a pair of SD70ACes lead the N11 south. Pretty cool to get a pair of GE-less NS trains in the same frame in 2022. 8/13/2022

For years, the typical power for the Huron & Eastern's 701/702 Bay City-Durand turn was their pair of C30-7s, #5086 and #5175. Both are seen here leading 702 south towards Durand on pleasant spring day. 4/13/2012

ImageLSRC SD50-3 #6351 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Lake State (State, there is only one "S") #6351 is paired with a freshly rebuilt CM44AC at CSX's Walbridge yard just outside of Toledo, OH. The current arrangement with CSX has each railroad provide one locomotive each for two sets of power on the trains that run between the LSRC and Walbridge. Since none of the LSRC's locomotives currently have PTC, they are always the trailing units on CSX. That may change with the coming of 5 "new" ex UP SD70Ms.

#6351 was built in 1984 as Conrail #6771, and still retains its CR-spec flexicoil trucks and "bug eye" FRA marker lights. 8/14/2022

I love this picture! For a while someone (TRW?) was using Central Warehouse in Saginaw to stage auto parts and HESR was using the beautiful GTW box cars you see there in that service. Those box cars may have been originally standard height that were raised and rebuilt.
ImageCompany Propaganda Train by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Excuse me sir, do you have a few moments to talk about our lord and savior, the Grand Trunk Western? GP38-2 #4917 leads a rolling GTW billboard out of Durand yard on L500 back in June of 2012. The plow stripes were added to a few GTW Geeps around this time by a Michigan engineer. Reminiscent of the stripes the Trunk's own GP38-2s once wore, the practice had been long discontinued by the time they picked up this ex MP Geep in 1987. 6/1/2012

ImageTaking a Dump by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The Portland & Western's "Rock Train" pulls into the siding at Hillsboro, where the stone will be offloaded at the dump at the Lakeside Industries Asphalt plant. This train, which runs as a remote control job out of Tigard, had GP40 #3004 and SD9 #1854 on the west end and GP39-2 #2304 on the east end. Once the train was clear of the switch on the main, the RCO switched his box to control the #2304, which is seen here working hard to pull the train up the hill and into the dumper. 9/9/2022

ImageOregon Coast Scenic by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

After touring the Tillamook Creamery, we happened to stumble upon the Oregon Coast Scenic train leaving Garibaldi. Remembering this spot from our drive down, I booked it north a mile or so to snap their Great Northern F7 and four cars as they rolled along the water on this beautiful Labor Day. Had just enough time to climb the rocks! 9/5/2022

Looking at Duquesne on a map, this Midwesterner would never have guessed it was pronounced "Doo-cain". With US Steel's large Edgar Thomson Works in the background, the Union's 66A crew pulls through the yard with a train of coke empties for the Irvin Works. 8/14/2022

ImageEnd of the Line by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Portland & Western's Harbor Turn sits at the literal end of the line in Banks as the crew pauses for lunch. West of here, this line was the famed Tillamook branch, which is now out of service between Banks and Batterson. Operated by the Port of Tillamook Bay RR, the line rostered many EMD SD9s and GP9s and hauled a lot of lumber traffic. Heavily damaged in a storm dubbed "the Northwest Gale" in 2007, the line suffered many wash outs and the crucial bridge over the Salmon River was deemed beyond repair. The entire line is still owned by the Port of Tillamook, who leases this portion to G&W's Portland & Western and the west end between Tillamook and Batterson to the Oregon Coast Scenic. 9/6/2022

Thank you for the back story on Port of Tillamook Bay RR. I recall that they had some very steep grades and would need three or four engines to pull less than 10 lumber loads up them.
