Southern Pacific #4449 is down to the last few miles of its incredible journey from Portland, OR to Owosso, MI for Train Festival 2009. After turning on wye, the streamlined 4-8-4 is now rolling slowly past the former GTW Durand Union Station. It will arrive in Owosso after dark. 7/19/2009

Looking a little more faded each time I see it, but overall still looking nice in a paint job that's going on 30 years old. GTW GP38-2 #5856, built as Rock Island #4374, trails on a CN freight westbound across the CSX diamonds in Wellsboro. 8/27/2020

Nice picture of a great little engine. The ex-RI engines (5850-5861) had larger fuel tanks than the original GTW engines (5812-5836). I wondered if 5850-5861 were assigned to different services because of the increased fuel tank size and possible tractive effort that goes with more weight.

ImageHamilton Northwestern #1416 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Michigan's newest shortline, the Hamilton Northwestern, operates 7 miles of former Pere Marquette line from Hamilton to Holland. Trackage rights on CSX for an additional 4 miles bring the HNW right into Waverly Yard, where the railroads interchange. GLLX MP15AC #1416 was freshened up with a new patch job and lettering by myself and one of my coworkers. While a full repaint will happen someday, we think it looks pretty nice now! Taken in Hamilton after a run up to Holland and back. 6/23/2022

ImageI Waited...For This? by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

After taking a ridiculously long time to traverse about 4 miles, L303 finally rolls slowly east across the Thornapple behind a single ES44AH. The train would subsequently stall a couple of miles east of here due to Trip Optimizer failing and not returning control to the engineer. After cutting TO out, the crew would back the train west a few miles, get another run at the hill, and make it up without incident. 6/30/2022

ImageGTW 0-8-0 #8380 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Grand Trunk Western P5g class 0-8-0 #8380 was part of the GTW's final order for 0-8-0s in 1929. Slow but powerful, the 0-8-0s formed the back bone of GTW's switching fleet. Many of them served into the late 1950s until finally being replaced by diesel power. #8380 was one of a dozen GTW 0-8-0s sold to Northwestern Steel & Wire Co in 1960. Originally all sold for scrap, several were found to be in great condition and were converted to oil firing, then put to work switching NWSWCo's plant in Sterling, IL, a task they did until 1980. Upon retirement, #8380 was donated to the Illinois Railway Museum, where it is displayed today. 7/13/2008

ImageC&O Allegheny by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Chesapeake & Ohio #1601 is a 2-6-6-6 Allegheny built by Lima in 1941. Among one of the heaviest reciprocating steam locomotives ever built (over 600 tons including the tender), they were also among the most powerful. Their 7,500 horsepower rating was only exceeded by the Penny's Q2 freight duplexes. While incredibly powerful machines, the C&O typically assigned them to coal drags, a task that rarely had them going much faster than 25 mph. As a result, the true protentional of these massive locomotives was never fully realized, as they would've been rocket ships with a fast, heavy freight train. The #1601 is one of two survivors, the other being #1604 at the B&O Museum in Maryland. The #1601 is displayed at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. 8/13/2012

These coke trains were always in Rouge Yard back in the 1990's. I have not gone by there much in the last 20 years so I am not sure what cars they use these days.
