ImageStorage Extra by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

With 50 empty coal gons clacking along behind, Mid Michigan GP9 #24 rolls east along the former GTW through Ada at dusk. The empty cars would be put into storage on the out-of-service portion of the GTW main in Lowell. 6/23/2009

WAMX 4190 with Z739 heads north up the CSX Grand Rapids Terminal sub approaching Fuller Jct where they will work the old PRR/MIGN yard north of the diamond. This yard houses a propane transloading operation and a shuttered frac sand operation.

ImageThe Last D706 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Lead by a C40-8W/CM44AC duo, this would be the last D706 I would shoot before the symbol changed to L303 a few days later. The train is seen here approaching 36th street in Kentwood. 2/21/2022

ImageChatsworth by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A northbound Metrolink train prepares to stop at Chatsworth with a venerable F59PH in the lead. As I understand it, most/all of these are now stored/retired due to the arrival of new EMD F125s. 3/8/2011

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

After delivering a loaded grain train to the Ann Arbor at Osmer, a quartet of Tuscola & Saginaw Bay GP35s rolls north past the Durand depot, heading for home in Owosso. 3/25/2006

Image"Spectacular Nothing" by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

N962, an empty eastern coal train from either the power plant in Essexville or Marysville, rolls south on the former C&O Saginaw Sub through Spectacular Nothing (Grand Blanc). Today this portion of the Saginaw Sub is operated by the Lake State Railway. 4/18/2009

Under a threatening sky, K683 heads west on the B&O behind a pair of Union Pacific SD9043MACs and an AC4400. 7/22/2011

ImageGloomy Blue by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

It's a gloomy day here in West Michigan, so here's an appropriately gloomy photo. 21Z rolls west near Pinola with an ex Conrail C40-8W leading, it's sickly RS3L wailing for the crossing. This would be the last blue Dash 8 I would ever shoot on NS. 2/28/2010

IHB's Burns Harbor turn is westbound on the NS with a pair of GP40-2s at 499. I always liked the orange scheme on these units. 5/27/2006

Huron & Eastern's 702 arrives in Durand behind U23Bs #8903 and #8905, with GP40-2W #9712 bringing up the rear. All three locomotives still wear the colors of the line's former operator, the Central Michigan Railroad. 6/13/2009

A pair of SOO SD60s lead what was the last X500 I would shoot before the train's demise a few days later. The classic EMD's are rolling through Alto and about to cross M-50 on a hazy August afternoon. 8/8/2010

ImageGS-4 in Michigan by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Southern Pacific #4449 was undoubtedly the star of Train Festival 2009. The streamlined GS-4 class 4-8-4 is seen rolling south on the Great Lakes Central's ex Ann Arbor mainline near Wolf Crossing. 7/24/2009

Huron & Eastern C30-7 #5086 leads Central Michigan U23B #8903 across the Saginaw River with a long 701. The train will make a quick set out in Genesee Yard, then continue on to Bay City. 12/2/2009

ImageM&PP 0-4-2 #2 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Built in 1890 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, #2 was one of 3 cog-equipped tank engines built for the Manitou & Pike's Peak Cog Railway. Originally built as a simple, it was converted to a Vulcain compound in the early 1900s. #2 last steamed in 1940 and has been on display in Manitou Springs, CO ever since. 10/14/2021

Huron & Eastern's 2 C30-7s, along with a few other of their GEs, were scrapped in 2013.

After the Leelanau Scenic RR was abandoned in the early 90s, it's ex B&O bay window caboose stayed behind. It currently functions as an office for the Traverse Area Recreational Trail (TART), and has since been repainted. 7/7/2005

It's a cold winter day as a pair of Illinois Central units lead a westbound CN freight through East Lansing. Trailing the lead SD40-3 is IC 3140, a former CNW GP50 rebuilt by the IC as a GP40-3. 2/22/2007

Amtrak P42DC #68 and P40DC #817 is stopped at the Fort Madison, Iowa station leading Amtrak southwest chief #3. #68's paint has DEFINITELY seen better days, but these engines are still Amtrak's mainstay for the next few years.

ImageOld and Older by David R. Collins, on Flickr

Fort Madison, Iowa is very proud of their tracks that run through their turn, Which is former Santa Fe. So naturally they have a caboose and a 2-10-4 steam locomotive on display, but when I saw a somewhat common Ex Santa Fe warbonnet Dash 8 which was serving as one of the rear DPU's on this eastbound manifest rounding the curve, I couldn't pass this opportunity up to get a picture of two true Santa Fe workhorses next to each other.

ImageThis Is Weird by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Amtrak's P371 is northbound across the Grand River bridge in Grand Rapids, after a major incident (the nature of which now escapes me) west of town forced them to turn around and head back. Was very odd watching Amtrak come rolling in from the west in the morning! Heritage NPCU #406 leads the way. 6/13/2013

ImageFuller Meet by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

The Grand Rapids Eastern crew waits patiently with MMRR 24 as Grand Elk's 120 job arrives with some hot cars for Amway in Ada. For whatever reason, this is one of the only decent photos I have of the old yard office and sheds at Fuller before some of them were knocked down and the office was repainted. 2/25/2010

ImageBallast Train by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

W080 sits dead on the main after the crew's hours of service expired. The Herzog ballast train spent most of the week dumping ballast in the greater Grand Rapids with a nice pair of SD70MACs for power. NWS's Grand Rapids Doppler Radar, aka the "Golf Ball", is seen in the distance. 9/10/2008

ImageNREX SD40-2 #5418 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A former North Shore Mining SD40-2, now owned by National Railway Equipment, sits in the Mickey Mouse at CSX's Wyoming Yard. The unit had spent the last year leased to Marquette Rail, and was being returned to its owners after G&W sent 3 new SD40-2s to the MQT. 4/11/2015
