An evening outbound commuter train arrives in Tinley Park behind one of Metra's MP36s at dusk. After this, we drove across town and enjoyed some Chicago-style deep dish at Lou Malnati's. 4/1/2022
A healthy serving of GP38-2s and SD40-2s (part of a balanced breakfast) lead HWSZT west towards Palestine, IL, on the Indiana Railroad's former IC "High Line" just after sunrise. New Lebanon, IN 4/3/2022
A pair of Indiana Harbor Belt's unique RP15BDFs switch the west end of the IHB's Gibson yard on a cool spring evening. These locomotives burn liquified natural gas and were rebuilt from SW1500 cores. 4/1/2022
One of Amtrak's very sharp looking Phase III heritage units, #145, takes a breather as it leads Amtrak's lakeshore limited #49 at it's station stop in Elkhart, Indiana. The title for this picture is a reference from Railroadfan.com's chat box.
A BNSF Intermodal rounds the curve at Millbury, OH as it receives a clear signal west. Just behind me headed the opposite direction and rapidly approaching is NS 8101 and 8114 in a trio lineup with a UP SD70 in the consist and 8101 on the front.
A quiet Saturday morning in Chebanse, IL, is momentarily interrupted by the sound of Amtrak's northbound City of New Orleans as it rockets by, Chicago-bound. 4/2/2022
Indiana Railroad's HWSZT has just crossed the Wabash River and is now rolling east through the floodplains, headed for their next stop at Linton. Would've been nice to see them do their work across the river in Palestine, IL, but the closest road bridge is 30 miles away! 4/3/2022
A venerable SD40-2 rolls east by milepost 146 with L303-26. Of course, this power set only stuck around for a few days, but the pairs of Gevos seem to stay on this train for months! 3/26/2022
The last remaining French RTG "Turboliner", one of the first pieces of new equipment purchased by Amtrak, sits forlorn and derelict in a southern Indiana scrap yard. 4/3/2022
A pair of SD40-2s are just about to cross the CN at Kearsley, Toledo-bound with train Q321 on CSX's Saginaw Subdivision. The second track here has since been removed, and the line is now the property of the Lake State Railway. 3/23/2013
Union Pacific SD40-2 #3300, specially painted in the "Pulling For United Way" scheme, was just one of close to 100 SD40 types in storage at the former DRGW Burnham Shops in Denver in 2010. This photo was taken with permission, and the employee who showed us around on that day was very accommodating as he accompanied us up and down the rows of stored locomotives. While many of these engines never worked for UP again, #3300 was one of the lucky ones, being rebuilt as an SD40N in 2014. 7/22/2010
Four GEs and an SD70MAC head north with Q648 through Farmersburg, IN on the old C&ED line. The trailing ES44AH has been freshly repainted into CSX's new YN3C scheme. 4/2/2022
A pair of Indiana Railroad SD9043MACs glow in the light of the rising sun outside of Hoosier Energy's Merom Generating Station near Sullivan, IN. 4/3/2022
Detroit-Grand Rapids freight Q327 has an SD40-2 fresh out of the paint booth for a leader as the train descends the hill at Fox on a sunny evening in April. 4/17/2010
An ex Conrail C40-8W and a BNSF SD40-2 (#1958) duck under the old New York Central signal bridge with a westbound intermodal in Elkhart. Today the Dash 8, the signal bridge, and even both of the mainlines here are gone. The mains moved to the left of the bridge after a major reconfiguration of CP 421. The bridge itself was donated to the National NYCRR Museum, some of who's collection can be seen in the distance.
As a side bar, I always thought these ex CR Dash 8s looked really weird in NS paint, particularly these early repaints that didn't get the white brow. 10/2/2010
