Re: Cropping Suggestions?
Well they're both unlevel, they could both use some CCW rotation. As for the cropping, it looks like the first one is cropped too squarely. You're cutting the train off in the second one and it's also fairly square from what I can tell. Could just be the monitor I'm on though.

Re: Cropping Suggestions?
I like both shots Eric. I have to agree with Y@ with the rotation, and maybe just me but both seem a little "dark" almost cloudy conditions. Great composition with D716 though.
Re: Cropping Suggestions?
Sorry to say this (and don't take it as a knock on your photo Eric, because it's not) but it's just a standard sunny wedgie. Nothing special about the composition. Don't sugar coat things for people James, it's not a good way to give tips to people.TrainWatcher wrote:Great composition with D716 though.

So you like the wire touching the top of the train along with that ugly pole and utility tower growing out of the rear of the train, one of them even cut off?TrainWatcher wrote:Great composition with D716 though.

Re: Cropping Suggestions?
The train is the subject in the photo not the surroundings also. I mean yea it could be worked.
Re: Cropping Suggestions?
That doesn't make much sense...if you want to take an "above average" railroad image, the train AND surroundings should be the focus. You can't just pick one. That will usually make you a sucky photographer. Take these examples.TrainWatcher wrote:The train is the subject in the photo not the surroundings also. I mean yea it could be worked.
Shooting for the train will make you a great wedgie shooter. Shooting for the location will make you a great railroad photographer.

Re: Cropping Suggestions?
Ahh, ok. But you said "composition" which encompasses the entire image (aka "surroundings"), not just the subject.TrainWatcher wrote:The train is the subject in the photo not the surroundings also.

Y@, I agree with your comment:
Both are excellent advice and will make us better shooters.
Another one I remember from a pretty good rail photograher is "Don't think of it as a train picture, think of it as a picture with a train in it."Shooting for the train will make you a great wedgie shooter. Shooting for the location will make you a great railroad photographer.
Both are excellent advice and will make us better shooters.
