CSX B20-8 Questions

Unread post by Talk »

How Many B40-8's did CSX derate to B20-8's? (if only some, What numbers?)

How much Horsepower did the B20-8's have? 2000?

How were they derated? Software? Removed Turbo?
Ironically bad at Small Talk :(

2000 HP. I was told that they were "de-rated" by disabling notches 6, 7, and 8. Kind of like what they did with the GP38-2S and SD50-2 programs.

Was this considered a successful program and do you think more high horsepower 4-axle GE’s will be derated?

I doubt it, there aren't many B40-8s left at this point. The only Class 1 still operating them is BNSF (B40-8Ws), which has recently had several rebuilt by Wabtec but as far as I know are still rated for 4,000 HP. The 2,000 de-rate was just CSX being cheap and wanting to cut down on maintenance. The reality is these (and EMD's GP60) were built for high speed intermodal service. But the railroads go "Oh, 4 axles, yard engine?" and assign them to locals and switching jobs, tasks that they are extremely ill-suited for.

Didn't CSX get a bunch of B40-8's back via the Pan Am acquisition? They also said in their STB merger filings that they generally intend to keep Pan Am's 4-axle locomotive fleet.

I heard from a friend that those are probably going to stay in the New England area. But yes they did get some back
