What we know about CN's new AC44C6M's

Unread post by David Collins »

I certainly didn't think I would be hearing the letters CN and the word AC44C6M in the same sentence, but here we are!

According the facebook post that I attached, these new units are/will be classified as AC44C6M's (and there will definitley be a EF-**** designation too for the canucks).

Any other info on these would be appreciated.

Didn't they send some C44-9's (2500's) to Wabtec for rebuild? Could this be one of those DC to AC conversions? Curious...

word from folks in MN is that the first group of 3300s are going to the iron range to move traffic there. i'm guessing they'll replace the Dash 8s and oddball SD40 variants.

So these will be rebuilds from their existing SD70/SD75 fleet I'm guessing?

Supposed to initially be the IC standard cab SD70s. There have been talks of rebuilding the SD70I and SD75I fleet as well.

Man, it would be sad to see IC "Black" SD70s re-built and repainted! Yet, standard cab units will look great no matter what! Hopefully they won't change their cabs!!!! How many of those are being done? How many total rebuilt? They were keeping the C40-8s in MN because the crews like them! Guess that will end! What C44-9W engine was 3300 previously? How many and how fast are they being done? MAN!!!!  😲 😲 🤔 🤔 😲 😲 😲 😲 🤔 🤔 😲 😲 😲 😲 🤔 🤔 😲 😲 😲 😲 🤔 🤔 😲 😲

All of them are supposed to be rebuilt. They will be getting new wide cabs just like the NS SD70ACCs.

In the first photo linked by David, 3300 has what looks like a marker light above the left ditch light.
Does that function as an end of train marker in the case of DPU?

Nice observation. Indeed it it an EOT marker.
And at both ends.
This link shows an image of the rear end with the marker illuminated.

Yes, all of CN’s DPU-equipped locomotives have red marker lights for that purpose.

I hadn't expected to see one of these built-in markers in action for a while. Much to my surprise, CN 3089 brought up the rear of an eastbound this morning.
CN 3089 is not a C6M but it provides a demo. The light is a solid red, not flashing. Not sure on the leader of this train either.

Yep, CN has been doing the "Red Marker Lights" for a while! I actually don't like the single red lamp! They look much better built into the nose how they (and 'Class Lights') are meant to be seen! This picture (© Der Langsame) shows CN ES44DC (built January 2006) as a rear D.P.U. in Fond du Lac, WI, January 2019! This here looks much better!!!! I wish all the D.P.U. engines had these like this! Also, CN EMD SD70M-2s have them, but by the numberboards!
