Trains Per Day by Route 2021-22 Michigan

Unread post by Ypsi »

Hey guys, I am looking to create a list/ map of trains per day for Michigan. I would like to transmit the information into a map, so I will be listing "sections" of subdivisions to get a count between terminals. For example, on the Plymouth Sub I would list Grand Rapids to Lansing and Lansing to Plymouth for the sections since trains might now go all the way across the line. Because some trains are as needed or less than daily, I would like to represent the average "Monday-Friday" (or busiest day) counts for the lines for class 1's. Short lines will be listed on the bottom of the list. For short lines it will likely be 1-2 on most lines, but if there are multiple they will be noted. For small short lines a train going to interchange will count as 2 trains since it went both directions (DCON going to and from CN). Class 1 terminal locals (locals that work around a yard/ in a small area) can be noted, but for now I will not include them in an over. NS, CN, and CSX road locals will be counted.

M-F on the CN Holly Sub

Milwaukee JCT to Pontiac

16 trains (6 of them are Amtrak)

Amtrak 350-355
CN L515 SB & NB
CN L513 SB & NB
CN L514 SB and NB
CN E251
CN Q116
CN A450
CN A401

Pontiac to Durand

6 trains

CN L514 SB and NB
CN E251
CN Q116
CN A450
CN A401

This list does not count GLC movements and extras such as E280, S756, Q119 and Q189. Also you may wanna put that any freights that you see south of Pontiac are normally fleeted around amtrak trains. So whenever there's an Amtrak train, you're almost guaranteed to see a freight either before or after.

For the Grand Rapids sub you could add Holland to West Olive - 2
- Z627 (MS) (Turn)
- N800/N801/N804/E800/E801/D801/D802/D803 (Coal to/from West Olive; Average of 1 a day)

Is it still the Montague Sub? im unsure

I can help for the general Southeast Michigan area.

Let's start with Norfolk Southern:

Detroit Line, MP 20 (end of Conrail ownership) to Monroe:
10N SB
11N NB
20N NB
21N SB
31M SB
331 SB
332 NB
358 NB
Sometimes another empty autorack NB for Sterling Yard (used to be 29G frequently, but now I'm not sure).
Fairly frequent, but not every day, are coke trains/empties to and from AK Steel off the Junction Yard Running Track.

So about 10 for a common busy day.

Detroit Line, Monroe to Ohio State Line:
all of the above, plus often a coal train to (and empties from) DTE Monroe

This excludes movements made by Monroe-based local trains.

So about 12 per day plus local movements near Monroe.

Detroit District, Delray to Ecorse Junction:
NS 121 WB
NS 176 EB
Frequently an Oakwood-based local to/from the Boat Yard line.
CP 140 EB
CP 141 WB
CP T27 WB (Windsor transfer, symbol can change to T41 once per week)
CP T28 EB (Windsor transfer, symbol can change to T40 once per week)
CP 244 EB (many days)
CP 147 WB (many days)
Occasional other CP trains, such as 240 EB, 241 WB, 650 EB, 651 WB.

So about 10-12 for a common busy day.

Detroit District, Ecorse Junction into Oakwood Yard:
All of the above plus
NS 331
NS 332
NS 358
NS B19 (both ways)
CR LV35 (both ways, from/to Livernois Yard)

So about 17-19 for a common busy day.

Detroit District, Oakwood Yard to Ohio State Line:
CP 140 EB
CP 141 WB
CP 244 EB (many days)
CP 147 WB (many days)
Occasional other CP trains, such as 240 EB, 241 WB, 650 EB, 651 WB.
NS 120 EB
NS 121 WB
NS 181 WB
NS 188 EB
NS 189 WB
NS 255 WB
NS 256 EB
Local job west to Milan (B71 in recent past)
Local job east from Milan (B73 in recent past)

So about 13-15 for a common busy day.

This excludes the Montpelier-based local that travels as far east as Adrian.

Corrections/updates welcome!

Racer did a wonderful job with Southeast Michigan CSX, I can add just a few things:

- Q131 uses the Lincoln Secondary frequently, whereas Q132, Q150, and Q151 typically do not.

- This means you might want to break the Plymouth/Toledo segment into two segments so you can "assign" Q131 to the Lincoln:
- Plymouth/Carleton (Saginaw Subdivision, which ends at Carleton)
- Carleton/Ohio State Line (northern part of Toledo Terminal Subdivision, which begins at Carleton)

- I assume you would not want include any CSX local that comes out of Ohio to serve the handful of industries in southern Monroe County.

- The CP train that travels back and forth between the Conrail Michigan Line and Oak Yard is CP 235 WB and CP 234 EB. On CSX trackage, I've heard it called Z509 WB and Z508 EB, but sometimes just Z509 each way.

- The Oak Yard local is CSX Y203. I don't know exactly what it does, but it sometimes comes down to Rougemere and goes back to Oak, and it's probably the train that serves the CSX West Detroit Branch.

- Just to clarify some names, the short trackage that terminates at Kenwal Steel is former DTRR trackage, and is the only part of Conrail's Terminal West Industrial Track that is not located near Conrail's North Yard. The trackage that extends north from P Company is Conrail's Highland Park Industrial Track. This track ends a little north and east of where it crosses the CSX West Detroit Branch at Fullerton. Conrail serves both tracks with trains that come out of Livernois Yard (symbols vary day to day). About 1 Conrail train each way north of the connection to CP Lou on Conrail's Michigan Line).

- Trains between Rougemere and Delray:
CP T21 WB (transfer from Windsor)
CP T20 EB (transfer to Windsor)
CSX Rougemere local job from/to Boat Yard line (often Y194)
Conrail local WB and EB from/to Livernois Yard (symbol varies day to day)
CSX Q132, CSX Q150 (when they do not take the Lincoln Secondary, which is most days; CSX Q151 enters the Detroit Sub via the connection from CP Lou on Conrail's Michigan Line)
So, about 8 trains per day here.

- This ignores any other Rougemere-based local movements.

CN Mount Clemens Sub:

Detroit - Port Huron:
A482 - Daily
A484 - Daily
L533N - Daily (Generally a Mount Clemens to Port Huron train unless work is needed in Fraser which necessitates running to Nolan (Detroit)
to run around his train.
L515 - Daily - Milwaukee Jct. (out of Pontiac) to Nolan and Gillen yards (Detroit/Warren) with lumber and chemicals.

Port Huron - Detroit:

M383 - Daily
A485 -Daily
E271 - 4-5 days per week
L533S - Daily - to Mount Clemens and points south (Fraser/Detroit)
L515S - Daily - East Detroit/Warren to Milwaukee Jct.

So, an average of 5 trains traverse the entire subdivision (Tappan - Milwaukee Jct.) daily - 271, 482, 383, 484, 485, and 2 locals - 515, 533 work the south and north ends respectively.

Weekly count is elevated somewhat by extra manifests (average 3-5 per week).
