Re: GDLK Operations

GDLK was NB from Plainwell after working Otsego at 7:20 PM. Power was 4225 and 4206 with about 52 cars with many if not most short NS hoppers right behind the power. Couldn't tell for sure if they were covered hoppers. A few tanks, gons, boxes, and standard size CH's made up the rest. Pretty late fo...

Re: GDLK Operations

Looks like a 501 train staged to go south. You might be right although that seems like a long way to back up a train of that size. I followed the tracks south, and sure enough, there's a train taken apart in Three Rivers with what appears to be a locomotive sticking its nose out of the paper mill. ...

Re: Found this picture/slide Looking for info on location

A lot will have changed since the 1970s. Like a former roadside park being developed by the local association into a recreational facility. Maybe someone can remember if the tennis courts were there then, but I'm guessing not. I’m wondering if the picture was taken from near here, obviously before t...

Re: GDLK Operations

I checked out flashearth to see if their imagery showed the stone yard development in Kalamazoo (it doesn't) and happened to notice something odd - there is a train on the NYC North just north of Patterson. Guessing it is stopped due to the proximity to the grade crossing. It has two units at the s...

Re: Found this picture/slide Looking for info on location

Any idea if the tracks went up to Petosky? Did the tracks run next to the road 31 or 131 north or any other northbound road? Is there a good map of the railroad my search got me a real general not very detailed map. If you look at Google maps or Google Earth you can see where the rail bed went thro...

Re: Found this picture/slide Looking for info on location

I am also leaning toward an inland lake because of the raft. Maybe there are plenty of those on Little Traverse Bay, I don't remember. Is there any evidence that the tracks are actually gone? What about the line that used to run past Lake City. Its been gone more than a couple years.

Re: Found this picture/slide Looking for info on location

Wondering if this was on the line to Harbor Springs, possibly in the State Park. The topo maps show the line running on a bit of a bluff most of the way from Petoskey to Harbor Springs. I haven't yet found a good map of the area with roadside parks. Still looking.

New Streaming Video Site

I just came across this. Didn't see it mentioned elsewhere, so if I missed it, my apologies.
On one hand I wish there was a way to tell us where the feed is from. On the other hand, the figuring out process is kind of fun.

Re: Found this picture/slide Looking for info on location

The reason I came up with Petoskey, or Bay View is because there is a similar structure, which has probably been reconstructed using original materials, next to the old rail bed in Bay View. It seems hard to accurately discern height from these 2D images and I haven't been up that way in years to re...

Maybe Petoskey? There's a similar looking object in the park along the old railroad grade. Close to the shore of the bay.

Just checked out the live cam in downtown Dowagiac. Looks like the fire is mostly out and didn't spread to the entire plant.

Paw Paw has been marketing very aggressively for businesses to locate there. They would probably be supportive of any effort to restore rail service.

Re: GDLK Operations

At any rate, they must have things cleaned up. A short (16-17 cars) train with single loco (maybe 4125, didn't get a good look) was NB through Plainwell at 16:20.

Re: GDLK Operations

I think there is only one solution to this mess (other than just building a brand new yard north of downtown), as illustrated in my crude drawing below. I liked Jim_c's suggestion, however there is a nice (privately?) owned parking lot by BO Tower now. That would take advantage of the existing swit...

Re: GDLK Operations

Seems to me that the derailment issues could be solved by building a NB connector by the BO Tower to the LS&MS, and then cutting over to the GR&I somewhere north. There's an old factory just north of there that looks pretty decrepit, and could be removed. There's also a lot of open space around the ...

Which property are you referring too?
Just on the MSO they were at the interchange point with the GDLK. They were NS boxcars so I'm sure they weren't getting scraped.

Re: GDLK Operations

NB from Plainwell after a run to Otsego. Thirty five cars mostly CHs with a few tanks, boxes, and 2 or 3 coil steel. Power is 4125, 4189, & 4225.

They also did some tie replacement on the Otsego branch.
