Re: GDLK Operations

... the school bus barely escaped being crushed by the onrushing train. Proof? Even the photographer who took the darn pictures said that the bus safely crossed. "Barely escaped" is exaggeration. Perhaps I should have put LOL after it. I thought when I also used "onrushing" that the reader would ca...

Re: GDLK Operations

Here's where 4225 is staying for now.
IMG_0413_j.jpg
It's on the LS&MS just west of the N. Main St.crossing in Plainwell. That's the same crossing where recently the school bus barely escaped being crushed by the onrushing train. Lots of hoppers are visible, there are some boxcars farther west.

Re: Flood Planning in Grand Rapids

This may partially explain why. Also if the sewage system is a combined sanitary and storm sewer, it was probably overworked.

Re: GDLK Operations

My dad said he saw an Elk train coming out of Botsford and heading south, with power shoving on the rear. He thought it was around 4pm yesterday. Was that a yard crew giving a shove to a southbound? Said there were quite a few covered hoppers which made me think it might not have been bound for GR....

Re: GDLK Operations

Yesterday afternoon there were several covered hoppers on the oval track south of Wayland. I couldn't get a good count because I was on the highway and there was lots of traffic. Pretty sure there were a minimum of 7.

Re: GDLK Operations

GDLK 4209 and 4125. Picked up 5 boxcars form the siding in Plainwell, and headed at about 16;25. On a Saturday, no less - a rarity for this section of the line. 5 box 11 tank 15 hopper 1 coiled steel 5 hopper 8 tank 2 hopper 47 total Count might be off by one or two. Darn thing kept speeding up. I'm...

Re: CN/CSX Frequencies and My Scanner

I agree that some systems had little to no difference in reception. When a neighboring county's fire dispatch went narrow, I had to turn the volume almost to max to hear the voice, especially the dispatcher. The tones were, however, almost as loud as before. It made for an annoying process listening...

Re: CN/CSX Frequencies and My Scanner

Narrow banding may be partly responsible. Narrowbanding can have a significant impact on the performance of your FM radio system because it also reduces your Modulation Index. This 0.83 Modulation Index results in a 6 dB decrease in signal to noise and a loss of up to 30% of coverage. ... If the FC...

Re: GDLK Operations

While working dowtown G.R. today, I caught the GDLK transfer from Hughart to Wyoming yard and it seems to be getting longer. Could it be that Grand Elk is increasing its interchange with CSX. I know that they interchange with Marquette as well but these transfer jobs seem to be increasing in length...

The trackage going downtown in 1913 goes to where the Perrigo Corporation has a plant. I believe that it was built in the 1920s. I am not sure what other industries were down there before then, One of the other customers in that neighborhood was, if I remember correctly, a coal dealer. The City of A...

GDLK 4124, and another of which I neglected to get the number, turning from ex-GR&I on to ex-NYC at Plainwell with 7 boxcars for Otsego.

In Plainwell, the old industrial siding to the paper mill ran down the center of a street for a block. Mill's closed, siding is gone.

Google Earth has hoppers at both locations. The tracks go all the way to Carson City. There.s an old elevator there. On Google Earth, and on the TerraServer April 2017 image it looks like there is something on the siding in Carson City. Any thoughts?

I believe it is 161.505. Amd yes, Amrak is now dispatching. Often they are referred to as "AML." I imagine that is for "Amtrak Michigan Line."

I missed that change ... there is still a law on the books, but it only applies to criminals. http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(d5opf3wfaukpwih5xnvavcyf))/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&objectname=mcl-750-508 ("A person who has been convicted of 1 or more felonies during the preceding 5 years" and "in th...
