Re: C&O Dispatcher?? Was wondering if you had any papers on the Chessie Dow/Death/Bomb Train?
Other than the trains traversing my territory (usually Sunday evenings loaded and empties back on Thursday afternoon), I don't have any additional information on the trains like consists, etc.

Re: Railroad Crossings and Power Outages
There was no blinking; either the local power was on or off. It was up to the signal maintainer to maintain the battery back-up.

Re: Railroad Crossings and Power Outages
I know you specifically referenced grade crossing warning devices, but in CTC we had a "power off" (PO) indication at each controlled location that would illuminate if the local power was off. We would normally notify the responsible signal maintainer that the location was on battery power.

Re: Where Is It?
I remember back in the 70's working at Carleton Tower most mornings hearing the DT&I dispatcher put out a train order for a train to "run extra Flat Rock Yard to South Yard." Never actually checked out South Yard in any of my travels back then, though.

Re: Where Is It?
We referred to absolute signals like the one at Gaines as "hold out" signals. On the Saginaw Sub, we had them at 7-Mile Rd and at South and North Holly. On the Ludington Sub, we had them at Dean-Midland and at Baldwin. Important to note: Don't bring a train from each direction up to one of them, unl...

Re: High level platforms
I think all of the MBTA platforms out here are high level. There may be a handful that aren't. Just don't stick your foot in the gap getting on/off!

"Clear boards east and west." 'Twas that way before they made the Holly Sub north-south.

Re: Train stations in Bloomfield Hills, Mi
Birmingham had a full tudor-style depot with the main station on the west side and a full raised platform on the east side. There was a tunnel from the depot over to the east side. The photo above is either Bloomfield Hills or Charing Cross, I believe.

3808049427_6481748d3c_o.jpg Rode Pontiac to Detroit and back numerous times in the 60's -- some in coach and a couple times in engine. (You could sign release forms to do such things on GTW back then). Great memories, to be sure. I was going to post the employee timetable pages, but my scanner is n...

Re: CSX Train Symbols BEFORE Conrail ?
Here's a list of symbols from July 1, 1987 we received while I was still working in Saginaw and we had "gone CSX." Didn't take long for Jacksonville to change all symbols, renumber locomotives, etc., etc., etc. For manifests they first had an "R" prefix and the locals had a "D" prefix. Can't recall ...

Re: Plymouth Sub Signal Update Thread
Under the operating rules I worked with, that was known as "a signal imperfectly displayed." I suppose they use the same terminology today.

Re: LSRC Meet! 6-4-21
Nice videos -- thanks for posting! Longest distance between passing sidings is Newark to Clyde. Often put northbounds in hole at Newark and told them "you're there for the parade" as they waited for 3 or 4 southbounds to pass. 'Twas better after we got siding at Grand Blanc and southbounds didn't ha...

Re: Trains Mag Rail Car Origins/Destinations Article
Naturally, I saw hundreds of train consist print-outs over my railroad career. Mostly, these were prepared by clerks at major terminals back then. When I first started in 1970, they were still using that yellow teletype tape. If the office had both clerks and operators (they were separate "crafts"),...
