Re: Amtrak Michigan line ownership

What killed the Jackson line was the decline in traffic running across Canada on the CASO line. As cars grew in size, the tunnel became a chokepoint. Additionally, there was political pressure from Washington for Conrail not to invest in lines outside the U.S. Line was kept west of Jackson to Kazoo ...

Re: Progress of the Michigan Line M/W (part 4)

According to Amtrak's website, the curtailed train schedules to accommodate maintenance of way activities will continue through October 30th. This means no #350 or #353 except on Sundays. Also, #351 will still continue to run on its earlier time and #355 will run on its later time. #358 will run in ...

Re: CSX Trackage rights on the CN?

Sarnia traffic goes through the Sarnia-Port Huron tunnel and then west to Flint. The CSX route in Canada is a dead end line. It no longer goes as far as Chatham.

In addition to the former PH&D, CSX has traffic (mostly chemical) in and south of Sarnia, Ontario.

Re: Old signals in Michigan

Actually the "classic searchlight signals" presently in use in Pontiac on CN (GTW) were installed circa 1970. They were placed on brand-new signal bridges when CTC was installed from West Pontiac to just below the former GM Truck and Coach plant which was located on South Blvd. Prior to that, older ...

Re: Passenger service south from Lorain

Regarding the Lorain and West Virginia. When I lived in Lorain in the early 1970's, I followed the line one day in 1972. The track was still intact complete with crossing signals at some road crossings. I seem to recall an overhead bridge where the L &WV crossed the NYC Norwalk branch. It was just w...

Ypsi Update - "New" siding at Ypsi tonight contained an orange Navigator Shuttlewagon trackmobile coupled to four Amtrak ballast cars, as well as a tamper and ballast regulator. Speculation from a crew member the other day suggested they may connect this siding with the segment across Forest Avenue....

A Toledo source indicates that 322 today has three (3) SD-70M's for Lake State tucked behind its engines. Blue with CITX markings. 3rd train in line to come out. No engine numbers available.

Ypsi update - New LH manual switch installed next to station in Ypsilanti today. First piece of panel track to connect to siding shoved into place. Switch starts next to the east end of station. Main track ballasted, lined, and surfaced this afternoon. Grade crossings at Park and Grove Streets have ...

Re: Incident involving Amtrak 365?

If they had to turn the consist to change ends, by necessity they would have to use the Flint wye and the Holly sub by the station. This is one of the only places where you can turn a complete consist.

Re: Progress of the Michigan Line M/W (part 4)

It is a LH switch sitting at Ypsilanti. Looks like it will be put in about 200' west of the station. The west end of the siding was shortened last year with its switch moved to just west of the bridge by Forest Avenue. Now the public crossing has been repaved with just the main track at Forest Avenu...

Q322 made a stop shy of Seven Mile due to "Activation failure" apparently referring to grade crossing protection. Got started again making a good sound. Unfortunately we have motorcycles going by drowning out all train sounds.

An answer for Tier4GEVO - Your radio is not the problem. I have a stationary unit connected to a "firecracker" antenna. My truck scanner uses a transit version of a skate antenna. I have been home and gotten only static on some signal calls. Other times, it seems the engineman is holding the radio p...
