Re: ADBF/JAIL Changes Made Under New Ownership

While traveling through Blissfield this past Sunday I was surprised to see an NS coil steel car in the yard there. I didn't know ADBF had a customer that received/shipped that particular commodity. I didn't take pictures which means I don't know the car number.

Re: Deshler vs. Fostoria - Which Is Busier?

"The main reason I’m not a fan of Fostoria anymore is the fact that there’s some warehouse being constructed in the middle of the park. Granted there was a lot of space there and something could’ve been built to fill it in but why in the middle of a railfan park? If it does benefit the park as a mod...

Re: Fostoria Park site work

When the park was built, I wondered if vandalism, etc. would get the best of it. I've visited the park more times than I can count over the years, and aside from hearing accounts from Ellen the caretaker as to how the toilet paper was being stolen from the women's bathroom; the usual complaints abou...

Re: Refrigerated Box Car Customers in Eastern MI

"I wonder if there are any customers in Toledo assuming that would be the closest place with refrigerated cars to Detroit" ND&W serves a couple of cold storage warehouses in Napoleon. At least one, perhaps both, get reefers. The product is then trucked from the cold storage warehouse(s) to the nearb...

Re: Dunn Paper in Port Huron Closing

Circle trip with Bluewater Chapter NRHS. I was there. A very cold day, so the brain wasn't working at full speed. Hoofed it to a nearby McDonald's for lunch. Foolishly set my nice Minolta SLR and telescopic lens on a table there and turned my back. A few seconds later I turned around and both had va...

Re: Lapeer, MI Rail History

Some additional points: PC beat the devil out of their line via a combination of heavy coal trains and deferred maintenance. If you walk the now rail trail north of Lapeer you can probably still find coal on the ground from a derailment that took place in I forget exactly which year. A bad bridge, p...

Re: Popular Railfanning locations in the Toledo area.

NS has posted new No Trespassing signs at the ends of the two stub end roads, Wales and Drouillard, that dead end into the Water Level Route in Northwood. I suspect folks have been setting up tripods on the right of way, although I don't know that for sure. NS police have been more actively patrolli...

https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdot/MDOT-State_Rail_Plan_Potential_Projects_Tech_Memo_3_354918_7.pdf It was an MDOT project. See page 6, cells 106 and 107, of the above attachment. What role the railroad played, if any, in getting the project listed is not known to me. It is my understanding the...

Re: Copper mining set to resume in White Pine

I believe the real damage (flooding related) to/on this line is on the Wisconsin side. Bridges out, etc. It will take a pretty penny to get trains rolling to WP again, probably more pennies than Watco would be willing (able?) to spend. Absent some federal and/or state money, I would be surprised to ...

rail_watcher, yes that is the location to which I was referring. Park anywhere else except there and nobody will bother you. And of course, stay off the tracks. The Northwood Police Department is just down the road but they are used to seeing railfans around there.

Re: Popular Railfanning locations in the Toledo area.

Northwood, an eastern Toledo suburb. CSX and NS mainlines cross at Vickers Junction there. Absolutely no scenery whatsoever but a good, safe watching spot. The stub ends of three roads dead end into the tracks. Stay out of the parking lot of the car detailing place but park anywhere else around ther...

Thanks, Steve B. Great stuff from you as usual. Of course, Kearsley Street. How could I forget that. Wonder if that "For Sale by CSX Properties" sign is still there where the track crossed. I hear you about Flint. In the past two years my brother and a good friend who either lived in Flint or nearby...

Re: C&O Old Main in Flint

Good to see you still checking in Steve B. The last evidence I saw of any use of the south of downtown stretch of the old C& O main was one of the below two, but I can't recall which of the two was THE last. This would have been in Summer, 1986 at the very latest, as I left Flint for good that Fall....

Re: C&O Old Main in Flint

The last active downtown customer on the old C&O main was Dover and Company on Grand Traverse Street. They received lumber for garage doors. The Atlas Warehouse also used rail up to near the end. They had their own lead that ran parallel to the Flint River. I don't know what they shipped or received...

Northwood owns the land, and leases it to a farmer. Over the years I have introduced the concept of a railfan park more than once. There is zero interest.

Re: Customers on what is now Lapeer Industrial, circa 1976

1. Union Camp was at the far southern end of the line. The last time I drove through that area, there was still a boxcar down there that has been sitting there for longer than I can remember. Perhaps as long as UC has been closed. 2. Church's received one or two switches from GTW, after they took ov...

L'Anse to Baraga Discontinuance of Service

Will go into effect November 8 unless contested. My understanding is that in recent years the only reason CN ran to Baraga was for crew to overnight at a motel there. Recent operational changes have made this unnecessary. Note that a discontinuance of service is not an abandonment petition. The Whit...
