Re: Plymouth Sub Signal Update Thread

Under the operating rules I worked with, that was known as "a signal imperfectly displayed." I suppose they use the same terminology today.

It was a different world back then on the Saginaw Sub -- in Michigan as a whole. But, just so you know I don't take myself too seriously 8)

Re: LSRC Meet! 6-4-21

Nice videos -- thanks for posting! Longest distance between passing sidings is Newark to Clyde. Often put northbounds in hole at Newark and told them "you're there for the parade" as they waited for 3 or 4 southbounds to pass. 'Twas better after we got siding at Grand Blanc and southbounds didn't ha...

Re: Trains Mag Rail Car Origins/Destinations Article

Naturally, I saw hundreds of train consist print-outs over my railroad career. Mostly, these were prepared by clerks at major terminals back then. When I first started in 1970, they were still using that yellow teletype tape. If the office had both clerks and operators (they were separate "crafts"),...

Re: Durand Trains

Pardon my reminiscing, but Durand has certainly changed since I first started visiting there in the 1960's! Recall when there were only gates that could be swung at the diamonds operated by the guys in the little shanty across from the depot and a hand signal to proceed! The Ann Arbor had its own tr...

Re: Plymouth Sub Signal Update Thread

Over on the Saginaw side, all of the signaling was set up for medium speeds (crossovers or entering sidings) between McGrew and Plymouth, except Novi was slow speed and both sidings at Lincoln were restricting only. I believe S. Pass Wayne was also slow speed. North end Plymouth (now called Middle R...

Re: CSX Road Railers

Posted at the other board https://members4.boardhost.com/RRHXHistory/msg/1620569708.html Posted by jim on 5/9/2021, 10:15 am I've been rereading a 2012 article in Railfan and Railroad concerning CSX's short lived roadrailer service in the late 80s between Detroit and Atlanta, and got to wondering: ...

I also like the yellow "Michigan style" crossbucks with the glass reflectors and mounted on a hunk of rail with the railroad identification stenciled on it -- "PM" no less!

Re: My first Railfanning Mistake.

I paid in 26 years to RRB and still get a tier II payment. My annuity is reduced somewhat because I started taking it at 64 instead of waiting to full retirement age of 66. I'm not sorry that I left railroading when I did, and I don't consider myself stupid for doing so! I also worked another 18 yea...

Re: Where Is It?

Believe Nolan is CN's timetable name for the location of switch from single to double track. Originally, I believe the switch was a little farther north and the location was then known as Double Track Switch. Back then it was a spring switch. Aren't the yard tracks there known as Nolan Yard--or were...

Re: Ford Motor Vehicle Train Deliveries from Oakville, Ontario

They used to float lots of auto racks at both Windsor/Detroit and Sarnia/Port Huron. We floated many on Chessie at Port Huron before tunnels could handle them. I can't speak to exactly what was happening in 1993. I seem to recall that most of what we floated on Chessie at PH were loads headed east f...

Re: Railfanning Guides: Grand Rapids Eastern RR

Very informative! My major exposure with this GTW line was mostly between Durand and Lowell and never explored west of there. What type of operating authority does the GRE use? I presume some variation of track warrant control? Also, does G&W dispatch all of their lines from some centralized location?

As part of my training back in 1970, I lowered and raised the C&O Black River drawbridge one time only. Same with the Saginaw River bridge from Washington Ave tower in 1976. I also worked about 5 years on a railroad swing bridge on the Mississippi River. That was an interesting job, especially if y...

Re: CP to Buy KCS

The CP's Chicago-KC route via Savanna-Clinton-Davenport-Ottumwa and St. Paul to Savanna (south of La Crosse) is mostly single track TWC territory (with some CTC) and via former MILW/CRIP trackage which went to Soo Line. Seems like some upgrades will be needed if volumes to KC increase.

Thanks, guys! That's what I was thinking, but I'm out of the loop on this newer technology. (Remember: I'm from the flimsys and carbon paper era!). I've been watching that VRF camera in La Plata, MO and it came up in the chat. WB's often wait there between signals, and the next signal is around a cu...

PTC/DIB Question

Not sure where else to put this question. Just wondering if the PTC display overrides the requirement to run prepared to stop and actually observe the next signal when delayed in the block?

Re: Plymouth is now busy again??

The way CSX and LSRC operates the Novi/ Wixom area has become interesting since CSX spun off north of 7 Mile (a few miles north of Plymouth). D735 (from Toledo) will run up to Lincoln Yard in Wixom during the evening and tie-down the train in the yard and park the power on their “engine track”. Z12...
