Moveable frogs aside, "turns out" it seems to have been reconfigured since this photo was taken.

Pretty nifty! That said, lining up the trains was pretty easy to learn. Running the railroad was the hard part!!

Re: CSX OCS Cross State Chase
Thanks for posting! Always glad to see Carleton tower still standing, even if it's boarded up. Spent 4 years of my life working that tower in the 70's!

Re: CSX's Plymouth Subdivision
CP is definitely not given top priority on the Chicago Line, but it's still all double-track, it's the most direct route from NW Indiana to Detroit, and it is flat, too. The PM is limited by siding length, is not very direct, and is not very flat. So CP is likely just biting the bullet and going wi...

Re: NYC Lines to Tri City Area
At least in the 60's and beyond, Detroit to Mackinaw via Saginaw/Bay City was the "Mackinaw Branch" and Jackson to Saginaw (Genesee St) was the "Saginaw Branch." NYC/PC didn't really use the term subdivision for their lines. They were either a main line, like "Main Line Buffalo to Chicago via Canada...

I worked for BNSF for about 7 years including 2 years in Ft Worth doing remote clerical work for locals in Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska -- among other places. C&O, since you worked for them for some time, do you know why all the rail traffic seems to be going slow in this area? There is a speed rest...

Re: Ft. Madison, Iowa
The cameras are mounted on the Kingsley Inn. 60 trains/day may be on the low side. We stayed there for a couple days last fall. Very nice place and pretty reasonable. They give a 10% discount if you mention Virtual Railfan. Thanks Mark. Yes watching on the rail cam I see it is quite busy there. Two...

Re: Marquette Rail applies for rail and yard rehab grant
As a dispatcher during that period, I got to see it all go down. I would comment further, but I suppose all the non-railroaders on here would just say I was being a disgruntled employee. I'll just move along now!

Re: C&O Dispatcher?? Was wondering if you had any papers on the Chessie Dow/Death/Bomb Train?
I remember standing on the sidewalk one night in December of 1987 at the Bay Rd grade crossing near Saginaw on the west side of the road and had three trains first was a medium sized mixed frt eastbound i forgot what the symbol was back then this was after the Ludington Sub had been severed as a th...

Re: CN Lake Orion Sub - The end finally???
Long, long ago in a far distant galaxy, we used to interchange cars to the GTW at Holly. As I recall, the conductor reported the cars destined to "Orion" as cars for "Eames."

Re: Where Is It?
At one time, Delray was busy enough to warrant two operators on each shift. In the early 70's, the second operators were eliminated. I was working at Carleton 3rd trick at that time. One night I went in and there was a note that I had been bumped by one of the displaced operators. Attached to it was...

Re: C&O Dispatcher?? Was wondering if you had any papers on the Chessie Dow/Death/Bomb Train?
It had no "symbol" (like ML18), so was not in the S&C book. Those "schedules" were basically just operating parameters anyway to have a framework for train connections and interchange with other railroads. If crews and power were available, we did try to put trains on duty at the prescribed time eac...

The "Chemical Special" ran track speed 40 MPH Baldwin to Saginaw on the Ludington Sub.

Other than the trains traversing my territory (usually Sunday evenings loaded and empties back on Thursday afternoon), I don't have any additional information on the trains like consists, etc.

Re: Railroad Crossings and Power Outages
There was no blinking; either the local power was on or off. It was up to the signal maintainer to maintain the battery back-up.

Re: Railroad Crossings and Power Outages
I know you specifically referenced grade crossing warning devices, but in CTC we had a "power off" (PO) indication at each controlled location that would illuminate if the local power was off. We would normally notify the responsible signal maintainer that the location was on battery power.
