Re: Refrigerated Box Car Customers in Eastern MI

I did make it out to see some reefers at Twin City Foods, they had 6 in total. Said they generally came from the yard in Lansing

Re: Michigan Rail business news redux

I see quite a few 86' box cars being pulled by CN and interchanged with NS from Dearborn Stamping. Often there are 15-20 box cars in a block. The only one I know of that does is Dearborn Stamping. It’s all flat steel/aluminum though, Ford hasn’t used coils for decades. Yessir. Those trains on the D...

Re: What is the requirement of working on the rail road

Depends on the job you want to do, looks like CSX only has one position open right now in Michigan: https://fa-eowa-saasfaprod1.fa.ocs.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/CandidateExperience/en/sites/CX/requisitions/preview/51103/?location=Grand+Rapids%2C+MI%2C+United+States&locationId=100000009412182&locationLev...

Re: Refrigerated Box Car Customers in Eastern MI

"I wonder if there are any customers in Toledo assuming that would be the closest place with refrigerated cars to Detroit" ND&W serves a couple of cold storage warehouses in Napoleon. At least one, perhaps both, get reefers. The product is then trucked from the cold storage warehouse(s) to the near...

Re: Refrigerated Box Car Customers in Eastern MI

It is pretty surprising given the size of the city and the demands for fresh food. I wonder if there are any customers in Toledo assuming that would be the closest place with refrigerated cars to Detroit

Re: 86 foot hi cube boxcars

I guess when they age at the few plants that rely on them just switch to trucks/intermodal? Is my understanding on how much longer they have left correct? I have no idea what your first question means so I’ll address the second one. To my knowledge the only plant around here that still uses those 8...

Re: Refrigerated Box Car Customers in Eastern MI

Lineage Logistics in Hartford on the WMI, Michigan Natural Storage in Wyoming on CSX, and Twin City Foods in Lake Odessa on CSX are the only reefer customers on the west side of the state, to my knowledge. Are there any in the eastern part of the state or would I have to go to Indiana or Ohio to se...

Re: 86 foot hi cube boxcars

I work in the auto industry, in the body shop of the Bronco plant to be specific, and I’ll tell you this; almost nothing comes in by rail anymore. The only thing we get by rail is frames. Literally everything else that isn’t made on site (which is only body stamping and even then it’s only a fracti...

Re: Refrigerated Box Car Customers in Eastern MI

Is Twin City Foods the only refrigerated car customer in the state? If so are there any large refrigerated car customers nearby? Ohio? Indiana?

86 foot hi cube boxcars

I love seeing these all over Detroit, especially after realizing most other areas don't have them. My understanding is many of these should be coming up on their end of life soon. I found myself pretty fascinated with their unique qualities and being so prominent here. Was hoping to consolidate what...

Re: Lansing Boxcars

In walking around west side park over the weekend it looked like the majority of the hoppers were brand new made by trinity industries for haliburton likely for cement. Most of them had a pretty clear manufacturing date of 3/16 being that trinity and railcar industries sales have pretty collapsed id...

They were cleaned up last year. Testimony to the fine people who are too cheap or lazy to at least drive around and fine somebody else's dumpster. Probably the same trailer trash that won't put a shopping cart back or who tries to sneak on railroad proprety to drop off their trash in the railroads ...

To clarify JTs comment, NS is currently storing some older auto part boxes and N&W hoppers at Saginaw yard. I think South Yard (Cavanaugh yard) is also being used for storage. This is correct, the Saginaw yard has some really smelly old hoppers and a few boxcars that have been there almost a month ...

It'd be nice if the city of Lansing would bother cleaning up that area of tracks, there's so much debris and trash around I'd imagine most people can't even tell that its an active line.
